View Full Version : Cable Cars across Sheffield
I've seen it reported today that Cable cars could an answer to Sheffield's Transport system. Under a new idea these cars could provide links to various parts of the city to save using vehicles that cause pollution.
What do you think of this idea?
I can't see it working myself.
Yay, it's another comedy transport suggestion, like the city centre monorail 10 years ago!
When you read comments like you could cover the whole city in cable cars for the same price as one tram route, it gives the impression that tongue was firmly in cheek.
Mind you a cable car up the hill from Dore station would be a godsend, even if phsyically impossible to build!
The solution to Sheffield's traffic problems is to stop messing around with the flipping one way systems and city centre roads. Has anyone noticed that the traffic has got really, really bad over the last 2 months since they started "improving" things? Sheffield is becoming infamous for it's crazy road system :(
Geoff,
I have noticed that the 8 to 9 am morning rush hour is now the 7 to 9am rush hour.
I've also noticed that the 4:45 to 5:45 pm evening rush hour is now the 4:30 to 6:30 pm rush hour.
Not just in the city centre, but also as far out as Firth Park. What gives? Are you all working late or summat?
I used to leave at 6pm, so I could avoid the rush - not any more.

Just answered your own question there Abby!

Has anyone been around that system which makes you loop around Republic yet?

yabba yabba - I can leave work at 6:30 pm with no major problems because I live just ten minutes away from work; it's not like I have to slog it out as far as the Parkway roundabout then head to the M1.
I can't believe those of you who live that far out would wait until 6 - 6:30 pm before making your journeys home :( It must really be messing up the work / life balance

Agent Orange 09-10-2003, 12:08 This issue has made front page in today's Sheffield Star.
I work in Derby until 5, so generally get a bus to Bradway from town about 6ish. There is still a bit of traffic at this time, but is dying down. The main delays seem to be caused by either roadworks or illegally parked cars in the bus lane, which means the buses have to slow down and barge out into the other lane of traffic, which stops both lanes.
Also Woodseats is a terrible bottleneck, traffic jams seem to occur on the approaches all day. A shoppers car park should be built and street parking banned, that way 2 lanes of traffic could continue through Woodseats.

That was my idea in a very early post - here (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=302&highlight=cable)

Much better for pedestrians though. I can cross the road in half the time.
Get a bike and cycle to work!

I have considered this, but to get to work, I would have to negotiate some big hills. My route to work would take me from the Northern General Hospital, downhill to Fir Vale, then UP Barnsley Road to Firs Hill, then all the way DOWN Rutland Road (suicide in its purest, most exciting form) then thread my way through the bus lanes to work. Coming home, I wouldn't fancy my chances cycling UP Rutland Road at all.
I could go a flatter route through Spital Hill, but that would involve cycling through the scruffy part of the town centre.
A flatter route still would be go through Brightside, but that would greatly increase the length of the journey.
I have thought of attaching myself to a kite atop Wincobank Hill and have a large gust of wind take me all the way into town, but that would depend on which way the wind was blowing (I wouldn't want to end up in Rotherham, for instance)
Keep the ideas coming Dug
purplepippa 10-10-2003, 00:45 I think cable cars around Sheffield is a *great* idea!!
I know nothing about the financial / practical implications, because I can't get past thinking HOW COOL!!!!
I love Sheffield for things like this!!

Is your real name Coun Alf Meade? :P ;)
This all reminds me of a strange dream I had involving embarking on a tram-in-the-sky from one of Park Hill's link bridges. Can't remember what happened next. Never mind. Any extra transport is good - we need more trams - and what about trolleybusses?
Sounds like Dore needs a funicular. I'd come and visit it specially...
alchresearch 10-10-2003, 11:48 How about the tube transport system they use in Futurama?

rickmiles85 10-10-2003, 17:54 It seems a good idea having cable cars. But I cant help to think how it would ruin the sky line. Although it needs to made more comercial with highrise buildings, sky rides would look a bit stupid. I have visions of people using them for the first 6months and then getting abandoned. Also the weather conditions would play apart from wind to thunderstorms. Also I think the council should stop thinking about more than one thing at once, they get confused. Better just get the supertram extentions finalised and construction work started.
The story in the Star last night looked interesting, I took particular interest in the claims about linking the cable cars from Hillsborough to Malin Bridge to Stannington, if that happened I would be well chuffed to put it mildly.
kittykat 11-10-2003, 22:26 Nice one Alchresearch getting your letter about cable cars in the Star today. I assume it was yours anyway.
alchresearch 11-10-2003, 22:32 Yep, now you all know where I live! Feel free to drop in for a brew anytime!
tslogf74 13-10-2003, 14:17 I've been saying for a while that Sheffield could do with cable cars. I don't invisage an extensive network but a link from Hillsborough to Crookes would be superb, and the hill is steep enough to warrant it.
One draw back would be that it will be out of action when ever there is wind.
I'd not like the idea of cable cars flying over my house. I can't imagine many that would. Imagine people watching you through your windows when the angle is right and in your garden also, and young thugs could easily drop things from them and damage buildings, cars, etc. Frankly the idea is preposterous.
Did anyone see the Wonderfull (tongue in cheek) sheffield city council plan to build cable cars to link up the 'hilly' communities of Sheffield ....
FOR ONCE a great idea, if they could handle the capacity it would be the perfect transport solution ...
Trams were supposed to be our saviour but ever caught one at rush hour and got STUCK IN TRAFFIC ???
And what a great way to get home after a night out with an ariel ride thru the calleys of sunny sheff !
count me in
alchresearch 18-10-2003, 10:57 Seeing as hills go down as well as up, why not just build tunnels THROUGH them. I've done it it in Sim City, I'm sure it would work!
If they're anything like the ones at Alton Towers - forget it. Whenever I go they seem to be rather good at failing to work for the odd hour (very annoying if you're one of those halfway to somewhere when in jams), not very fast and long queues to get on.
alchresearch 18-10-2003, 15:33 Ditto the ones at The Heights of Abraham in Matlock.
It'll be a novelty thing that should be good for Sheffield...its worked at Matlock hasnt it?
tslogf74 11-03-2006, 20:26 Lol.
I love it when people dig up these ancient threads.

spot on, i went to town the other week & finished up going on a site seeing tour its like something out of wacky races .
Other cities are much the same with their one-way systems, although many of them have a better network to play with, ours isnt very good at all.
miss_messier 12-03-2006, 11:43 People will still use they're cars I think - the tram is proof of that. They put the tram lines in and sometimes it can take me half hour to get from shalesmoor to hillsborough cos of all the cars.
