We're having a bit of a clear out and have some old printers, laptops, VDU, CPUs and so on.
I've had a look but can't find any thread on here that says if there is any organisation that wants such stuff.
If there isn't, is it OK just to throw them in a skip or should something more "green" be done with them?
I'm sure that there are a few organisations that will use old IT kit - I'll try and dig the details up.
One of the problems is that many charities can't take on board old electrical equipment for sale without it being tested, and in terms of using older computers you'll need to make sure that the hard discs are wiped properly.

I dug in Google - no idea of how good / bad / indifferent these outfits are.

I Googled with the following :
disposing of computers UK charity
Hope this helps!

I know that at Herries Rd Dumpit site, there is a section for old computers, monitors, hi-fi's, tv's etc and I would imagine that the other sites dotted around Sheffield will have the same facility.
Landfill shoudl really be the 'last resort'.
There's a lot of use that can be gotten out of even old computers, if they'll still run, and the heavy metals and such that still get used in PCs will just end up leaching out in to teh local environment eventually.

Save me a laptop please....I'll take care of the neccesaries...
Thanks for all your offers to help me get rid of it - I don't think any of the stuff is in working order so I wouldn't hold your hopes up too high
I intend to contact Sheffield Council tomorrow to see what they advise. It looks like most of the sites on the web deal with businesses only and wouldn't be interested in my little heap of junk.

If most of your machines are from the mid-80's we could always use them to hack into the pentagon and play "thermo Nuclear War" and if it all goes badly wrong perhaps learn them to play "Tic Tac Toe"

You could try
Paces Community Centre at High Green
They rebuild computers and then sell them on to people on limited incomes or who enroll on one of their computer courses. Don't know whether they'd be interested in non-working machines but I suppose they may be able to cannibalise them for parts.

Don't worry Joe, they don't landfill them.
The kind recycling workers take the equipment, put it somewhere dry and then people come and make them an offer for it. Whether this cash is declared or not I cannot say.
What I will say is that a friend of mine took down her old P2 last month. She had got the base unit out of the car and was unloading the monitor when the guy behind asked her if it was working and ok (it was), as he would love it for his small daughter.
Enter extremely surly tip man who interrupted this little deal, citing that as the equipment had been placed on the floor it was now classed as rubbish and belonged to the tip and should make him an offer if he wanted it.

well, that working guy at the tip seems like a complete t0$$er and we could use less people like that.
Also theres an amazing website called ebay. People will buy any old junk from there, lol.
