Hi all, I am trying to round up a hen weekend for my fiancee and would really appreciate some pointers. I've done some trawling but would really like a few opinions.

There don't appear to be any comedy clubs running on 18/19th July unless anyone knows better - tried the Roundhouse and Funhouse.

Suggestions for a decent nightclub for Saturday? As far as I can make out Embrace and Kingdom are off the menu, and Gatecrasher is closed or near as. Best opinions on here seem to be for Plug? Just somewhere to have a dance and a good night out, plus anywhere I could get them on a list would be a bonus.

For Friday, somwhere to go after closing time, possibly Crystal bar? Friday is the quieter night for them, no L plates and squealing.

As for restaurants, the Wasabisabi seems favourite for food and entertainment, how about a good Indian or Chinese? Aargrah? 23? cafe guru? tim po moor?

Thanks in advance! I really need the help!

Saturday - Forum is OK

However if it's a Hen Do surely they would want a cheesy night, there is the Flares and the 80's bar, something like that!

Takapuna's? West St!?!?

Wasabisabi is out of this worls mate. Good Imdian always be same as I continue to plug it - MANGLA - Spital Hill, plus they'll get a taxi from the Indian to town quick *hit, whom the owners will call for.

If it's expense free well then you may wish to try your suggestions!

Good Luck!!!

Im saying not crystal - i think its a little to expensive...

Im young so im probably just tight - if its a hen night although you want a laugh i dont think you would want to be round us teenagers ha ha.

Embrace -Dance, R&B - Aged Groups - 18-25 £5 Entry
Leadmill Fridays - Dance Classics & Pop - All Ages - £4 Entry
Leadmill Sats - Rock - All Ages - £4 Entry
Plug - Check out www.the-plug.co.uk - I love reflective but guessing you wont want that so check it out 1st!!
Unique - Same as above check out the night 1st

All together i think you should probably make your way down west st. Cant go wrong - Westways, Bedroom, 80's Flares, Crystal Etc....

Hav A Good Nite what ever you do!!

I think Aagrah would be a nice place to eat out for a hen do. It's very spacious.

Cafe Guru, is nice, but small so not ideal for a rowdy bunch of hens.

Mangla im sure is nice but a bit tacky?

good luck.

I've got a lot of suggestions as I'm also planning a hen do for my sister too. It depends on what the Hen prefers. Whether she prefers quality food, or a nice decor but reasonable food etc.

This is just based on your first post. If you don't like Embrace or Kingdom, then I think I know where you're pitching the preference level. The following is based on what I know and have been to.

Clubs - Cubana after 10pm, Leadmill, Speed Queen (not sure whether it still here in Sheffield), Forum.
Chinese - Hue Wei, Wong Ting, Zing Vaa, Mei's.
Indian - The couple on Ecclesall Rd, Aargrah, Ackbar (maybe too far)
Comedy - http://sheffieldcomedyfestival.com/

I'm trying to put a hen do together which include a spa. We're currently looking at St Paul hotel. The guy mentioned it's popular and need us to book one month in advance.

Thanks all for your ideas, Bago I think is closest to the mark! Checked the Roundhouse, nothing except some Godawful music night, no comedy to be had for that weekend. These girls are also at St. Pauls, seems to be a good choice though I don't know anything about it myself. When's yours gonna be? Got them booked in for Friday night at Cocoa, satisfaction guaranteed!

Any more for any more?

For Friday night, I think the Old House on Division St is open until 2am, and you can reserve space - they have a few sofas etcetera - and they do a really nice cocktail menu. I know you can reserve because I got booted from my sofa spot at 10:30pm on Saturday for an arriving Hen Party!!

Just to correct kellyanne, Saturdays at The Leadmill isn't 'Rock', its Indie Classics in the main room (think Stone Roses, Arctic Monkeys, Pulp, Killers etc) and the 2nd Room is 60s Soul, Motown, Stax plus Beatles / Stones / Kinks / Animals / Bowie & dash of soundtrack (Think Pulp Fiction / Blues Brothers)

:hihi:

How about a night of cocktails and champagne?

Wig and pen for wine, Platillos for tapas and wine, Trippet's wine bar for champagne, Ivory bar for cocktails. St Paul's is in a good spot and has a champagne bar.

If you're interested in a drag cabaret, I will be happy to discuss doing a show, either in a hired venue or as part of a night out by arrangement with a venue.

Thanks Tia but maybe not. Where's Platillos? I couldn't find it in the phone book. Wig and Pen, if it's anything like the others I've been in I'd rather stick a fork in me eye. Are Trippet's/Ivory bar the places for cocktails?

Hi Johnny

Just so we know what your fiancee would like, how old is she, what is the age range of the group that's going, from your posts I'm guessing she's not from Sheffield so where does she like to go out where she lives, what does she enjoy doing and last of all, why isn't her maid of honour sorting this out for her????

Then we'll be better able to advise you.

Johnny Rod

No indeed. She's late 20s but her buddies will be about 18-30. As above, Friday will be a bit more salubrious, cocktails etc. are the order of the day (night), Sat will be a bit more exciting. MOH is a bit tied up these days. My stag fell to bits so didn't want a repeat of that.

Last laugh comedy club (http://www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk/events/1587/last_laugh_comedy_club.html)

If you pm Toby on here, he is the owner/compere on there but he's also a Radio Sheffield breakfast DJ and so is a busy man. Dunno if he can get you a deal with Hot pants or anything.

Hot Pants is a good night for a mixed crowd who aren't regular go-er outers. Plays mainly 70's and motown in main room and 80's in the other room. I like to go occasionally and always have a good laugh. That's also at the city hall
http://www.leadmill.co.uk/gallery/v/Hotpants/
I also think if i remember rightly that the St Pauls do a deal for hen dos there - free entry???

Personally I think if you are not from Sheffield a visit to the leadmill would be in order.
http://www.leadmill.co.uk/clubNights.php?id=6
Contact Rupert there to get you some group tickets. There's also some information about Hot pants as it's run by the Leadmill. I'd also get a taxi down from West Street/Division Street as it's not the easiest place to find if you are not from Sheff (although it's really only a short walk from St Pauls). Nip in the Showroom (cinema) bar for a swifty.

I'd start with a cocktail in the St Paul's bar which is fabulous.

Opposite St Pauls is a cafe rouge and ha ha which are both nice if the weather is good to take in a glass of wine or two.
http://www.sheffieldrestaurant.co.uk/restaurants/City-Centre/Ha-Ha-Bar-&-Canteen/
http://www.caferouge.co.uk/locations_restaurant.php?id=15

also cafe rouge's breakfast is very nice if the one at St pauls is not included.

Don't be put off the Wig and Pen, one of the best places to eat in the city centre IMO and they've just extended it so i'll be going to eat there again soon. I don't think this one is a chain but i may be wrong. (it says on this that it's independent)
http://www.sheffieldpub.co.uk/pubs/city-centre/wig-&-pen/

It's easy enough to get to but off the beaten track a little so may be worth eating there.
There's also a fairly newish bar down there called The Quarter which i've not been to yet but heard good reports about... might be nice for eating, early evening.

Walk along to Cubana where they have Salsa music on until late, also reasonably nice to eat (although i prefer the other places mentioned)
http://www.sheffieldpub.co.uk/pubs/city-centre/cubana/

Walk back a little and into the leopold square area

Lots of bars and restaurants in there serving the cocktail crowd, Strada i think is really nice
http://www.sheffieldrestaurant.co.uk/restaurants/City-Centre/Strada/

Then you've got two choices really: West Street and Devonshire Street.

I'm a Devonshire street/Division street person but West Street really has to be done if you are not from Sheffield. They run parallel to each other and cross over really at West one which is where 23 is.

Bungalows and bears, (http://www.bungalowsandbears.com/listings.php)
Olive, (http://www.sheffieldrestaurant.co.uk/restaurants/City-Centre/Olive-Bar-&-Restaurant/)all good places to go to travel up to the....

As far as bars go, best cocktails in town imo are at the old house which is on devonshire street, a short walk up from St Paul's. My mate dj's there on a Saturday night as well so i am a bit biased! :D Try a bramble - delicious!
http://www.theoldhousesheffield.com/

The Common Room (http://www.common-room.co.uk/) and The Forum (http://www.forumsheffield.co.uk/)

Vodka revolution is not my taste but probably great fun if you are from out of town and on a hen do.
http://www.sheffieldpub.co.uk/pubs/city-centre/revolution-vodka-bar/
This place does good food and nice cocktails and is a short walk and again do great cocktails.
http://www.sheffieldrestaurant.co.uk/restaurants/City-Centre/23-Bar-and-Restaurant/

and in the same complex i like these two as well
http://www.sheffieldrestaurant.co.uk/restaurants/City-Centre/Le-Marrakech/

http://www.sheffieldrestaurant.co.uk/restaurants/City-Centre/Las-Iguanas/
Which is a chain but a very good one.

Hope that helps a bit.

Wig and Pen is independent and the owners also run Platillos (which is on Leopold Square). Both are v good and fantastic looking places. Wig and Pen is expensive for evening food, but they also do tapas which is good. Platillos has a tapas restaurant upstairs and a bar downstairs. Trippets is more wine/champagne I think rather than cocktails - and they do have a good and reasonably priced wine list. Ivory do great cocktails. I'd also suggest Sylvester's wine bar on Leopold Square.

In fact I'd do Wig and Pen on Campo Lane for drinks, then Platillos in Leopold Square for food, Sylvester's in the same square for drinks, then Olive Bar on division St for drinks, Ivory Bar just off west st for cocktails, then Trippets for wine/champers and olives on Trippet lane and then maybe to Cubanas across the road from Trippets for dancing!!!

Search for reviews on here or just google them all for websites - don't think Trippets has one.

Ooh, there is!

We have a great line up at The Last Laugh that weekend with our very own Toby Foster introducing Lloyd Langford, Dougie Dunlop and the wonderful Steve Royle who has supported both Peter Kay and Dave Spikey on tour. If your fiancee comes on the Friday night, she can take advantage of the "Friday the 13th" offer which means that she can buy 20 tickets for the price of 13, making it roughly a tenner a ticket. If you bear in mind that on the For Sale thread someone is selling tickets for Jongleurs in Leeds for £20.50 a ticket, it does make us great value. We have a snack food menu available (nachos, chilli, chips, that kind of thing) and a disco after the comedy. All in the lovely Memorial Hall.

Aha, when I looked there was nothing and the Roundhouse I think only listed something my granny would have gone to. I see your website is working now, when I was looking before it seemed to be powered by hamster wheels without the hamsters, so I didn't get much out of it. I'll check it out again.

I've now got a stack of recommendations, many thanks to you all for your time and enthusiasm. By the way something I've done for them is a Google map with the locations on there so they can check it out. This site could do with the same thing, if someone has the time or inclination to figure it out.

Thanks again!

Here's a question - I just realised that at The Plug next Saturday it says age 14+, doors open 7.30pm. The girls aren't going to get there till just before 11 I think, do you reckon the place will be full of nippers? (Cue flaming from under-18 forumers).

Edna - I looked up the Leadmill, looks fine to me but I don't think thye're that heavily into Indy, need some more pop and dance etc. I reckon.

Update - the festival finishes at 2230 after which it's over 18's as usual. Jumped the gun a bit there. Again!

Well thanks to you all for the suggestions, thsi is how it went (brief as I can)...

Friday, some spa treatments at the Mecure hotel St. Pauls. Spa great though seemingly nowhere to lounge around, you were either in or out. Hotel, nice place but possibly the worst staff on the planet.

Friday afternoon, tasting session at Cocoa. If I had arranged nothing else, this would have made up for it. Could not recommend more.

Friday night, Aagrah, very busy but excellent. The on to the bars... Crystal, hopeless barman who took 10-15mins for 8 drinks. All their 10 or so cocktails use strawberries or raspberries, neither of which they had. Clientele not so favourable either by all accounts. They spotted the VIP area (memebrs only), and were told that they didin't look like the sort of people they would want as members (this was the night wihtout L plates etc. and all quite civilised). Right, shove your rubbish cocktails, and off to Trippets, which was top banana.

Saturday: Bungy jump at Magna, AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH boing boing boing. More spa stuff. Lunch at Platillos, awesome, and surprisingly filling.

Saturday night, cocktails then on to Wasabisabi. Excellent food, good fun. Then a limo from American Pie (big white Hummer if you were out on Saturday) - apologies to the regulars but she's always wanted to do that - from Wasabisabi to the Plug (thanks Jade). L-plates on. Quick whizz round there but they were after something a bit more laid back, so on to Embrace. They were whisked up to the VIP (thanks to Mecure hotel concierge) which confusingly had two lots of music, and without whihc they wouldn't have stayed long. Finally back to the hotel for chips and more boooze.

Oh forgot to say, breakfast at Lynn's Pantry, also v. good. All in the enjoyed themselves, thanks again for the recommendations on here, as you can see they were spot on.
John
