It looks like Sir Dave Richards might get the boot from his position as chairman of the Premier League.

Richards not fit for job - Whelan

Premier League chairman David Richards is not fit to perform the role, according to Wigan counterpart Dave Whelan.

Richards' assessment this week that foreign players have damaged the national side and ultimately cost former England coach Steve McClaren his job when the team failed to qualify for Euro 2008 has come in for criticism.

And Wigan chairman Whelan made it clear he believes Richards' comments only highlight the fact he is not the right man for the job telling the Guardian: "It is well known within the Premier League that I don't support David Richards in any way."

He added: "I don't think he is qualified for the Premier League. I don't think he's fit to be the chairman of the Premier League and what he has said goes against the Premier League.

"The Premier League is there to provide one thing: the best league in the world. It does that and that is why the Premier League is so widely broadcast around the world.

"It is very unfair what he is saying. He knows the problems we have. It would be very difficult to have a rule or regulation that said so many British players had to play, because that is against the law."

For what it's worth, I think that he's right no matter what my opinions on his fitness to be the chairman of a premier league football club may be

I reckon that Richard Scudamore is the one that is out of touch.
From the BBC. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_prem/7449893.stm)Scudamore rejects Richards' claim

Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore has rejected chairman Dave Richards' comments regarding the number of foreigners playing in England.

Richards claimed that a lack of English players in the top flight has damaged the national team and led to the demise of former England boss Steve McClaren.

McClaren was sacked after England failed to qualify for Euro 2008.

But Scudamore said: "I would absolutely refute that the Premier League cost Steve McClaren his job."

Scudamore's stance is that England's non-appearance at the tournament in Austria and Switzerland, which is currently underway, had nothing to do with the foreigners in the Premier League. There is no point in me standing up and trying to apologise for what Dave has said. He is distraught

And he hinted that the blame lies with the England players who failed to secure the point they needed against Croatia at Wembley last year in order to qualify.

England lost the match 3-2, having clawed their way back from 2-0 down.

Scudamore added: "It is appalling that we are not at Euro 2008.

"November 21st was a horrible night. At 2-2 against Croatia we had done what we had to do.

"But there is only so much the Premier League can be held responsible for."

Scudamore also made reference to the fact that Manchester United and Chelsea contested the Champions League final this season, and suggested there are plenty of top-class English footballers.

"There are 220 international players eligible for England and we've just played a Champions League final where 10 players were English, " he said.

Scudamore's views seem to be in direct contrast with those held by Richards.

In a speech at the Third Dubai International Sports Conference, held in the United Arab Emirates principality at the end of May, Richards apparently claimed the Premier League was "hurting the national side".

"I would probably go as far as to say the Premier League has probably cost Steve McClaren him his job," he added.

However, Scudamore has suggested Richards regretted his statements.

"There is no point in me standing up and trying to apologise for what Dave has said. He is distraught," he said.

What do you reckon?

Dave Richards; the man who's self interest resulted in Wednesday's demise from the Premier League.

The man who's business decisions ultimatley led to Wednesday's freefall to the third level of English football.

Maybe he's got his sights set now on a position at FIFA who's chairman is trying to cap the number of foreign players allowed to play for teams in the premiership.

I dont think there is much to choose between Richards and Scudamore, they are both useless

It's probably the ONLY time Dave Richards has been right in his life.
In my opinion, he was paramount in Wednesday going in to freefall, but I agree with him on this one.

Not picking Beckham cost McClaren his job, and he doesn't even play in the Premier League. I don't see how foreign players had much to do with it when England had some of the best players in the world available for selection under McClarens reign.

There seem to be two different criticisms of his comments, though:

One, that he's wrong. That's debatable, and I don't think he is.

Two, that if that's his opinion he is the wrong man to be chairman of the Premier League. I don't see how anybody can argue that. The job of the Premier League chairman is to promote the Premier League, not to be worried about the England team.

He is wrong; because as chairman of the Premier League he can't say that its the lack of home talent in the premiership which has damaged the national side.

But he is right in saying that a lack of home players being able to get experience in the top flight is affecting the England manager's options for selecting the England team.

This is why; he can't criticise the organisation he has been fundamental in setting up. He can't criticise the organisation he works for which owes its existance to foreign players. Without these players the premiership would not exist because the worldwide audience would not pay to just watch mainly home grown talent.

Therefore it is Dave Richards and the rest of the Premier League who is to blame for the limited amount of choice and competition for England squad places.

Dave Richards can't have his cake and eat it.

However, Steve McClaren was simply not good enough for the job and is totally to blame for England not qualifying.

I agree as quoted from my earlier link:

"he joined Sheffield Wednesday's board in October 1989, six months after the Hillsborough disaster. Yet by February 2000 he was quitting as Wednesday's chairman to become the Premier League's first-ever paid chairman, on a salary, for his part-time position, of £177,000 a year.

Three months later Wednesday were relegated, saddled with huge debts and an angina-inducing wage bill from which the club has never recovered. Richards' business, Three Star Engineering, was also struggling, and in July 2001 went into administrative receivership."

Easy to see where the root of some of Wednesday's problems originate from?

No wonder the premiership wants rid:sad::sad::sad:
