View Full Version : Halcyon days, Millhouses photo 1958
Lostrider 09-04-2005, 21:52 Hi Folks
Just dug another photo out of the family archives. This one took by my Dad around 1956. Should bring back some memories for those baby boomers out there.
Paddling (http://www.aburke.freeuk.com/_private/Images/mill58.jpg)
I am the one with dark hair, trying to do the breast stroke in 3" of cold river water:hihi:
Yes , very evocative , Lostrider !
I must be older than you as at about the time your photo was taken , I was16 , and a crowd of us used to go to Millhouses Park ----but to the swimming pool , showing off in front of anybody who was there-----hopefully [!] , 16 year-old girls.
It's strange to think that it's possible that at the exact moment your photo was being taken , there might have been , a 100 yds. away an idiotic 16 year old who couldn't even dive and yet thought he could !
Then 47 years later on S.F..............halcyon days indeed !
I remember how cold that swimming pool water was, bexause it was just river water. That diving board was so high that when you got to the top the pool looked as big as a postage stamp. I went off it anyway....... once!
rubydazzler 10-04-2005, 04:18 that brought back some lovely memories ... my mother and her sisters always used to sit on the grassy side on the left as you look at the picture, sandwiches and flasks, towels at the ready ... it never seemed cold in the paddling pool though .. the water was too shallow i expect ... My little brother and I could be somewhere in the background there ... (gone all misty eyed now)
We girls used to tuck our skirts into our knickers and plodge about and once I slipped down and had to go home on the tram knickerless ... said little brother piped up - my sister's wet her knickers ... they're in mummy's bag! general laughter ....
little brothers eh? don't ya just love em!
60s_chick 10-04-2005, 21:15 Thanks for the memory
The one on the front left looks exactly like my grandma and I too had to go home with wet knickers Ruby
Robbinabobin 12-04-2005, 20:02 Great photo Lostrider
Used to come to Millhouses with my Aunt and Uncle and it was a great treat.
Did you ever zoom round the boating lake on those paddle boats where you turned the handles?
Fab. days..... a few jam sandwiches and a bottle of Tizer.... couldnt beat it as a kid.... thought Millhouses was the 'seaside' where everyone went for their hols. (no one told me any different!!)
Thanks for the memory

I can remember a day out at millhouses when a train crashed or derailed. If you look in the back of the photo, just over the fence was the railway line. I remember my dad climbing over the fence to help. I tired to follow but he made go back. I can remember seeing a steam train on it's side. It would probably have been the late fifties.
I can remember the boats with the paddles. A great day out and a nice ride home in the back compartment of the tram.
I remember going there when I was really young and on a hot day it was really packed.
I seem to remember each section was a different depth.
Shame it is not used any more but I think there was an issue with the water not being to clean :)
I often jog through millhouses park and I always think that area looks a bit sad now compared with what it used to be like.
Having said that when I ran through the park not last sunday but the one before the main park was really busy.
I always used to enjoy millhouses park more as a child than endcliffe not sure why :)
I also remember they used to have a huge outdoor chess/draughts board.
Thanks for posting lostrider brings back some happy memories.
ive just spent the morning in the park with mi laddo and mi dogs walking past the paddling pool brought back loads of memories, its a shame its in such a state i'm sure it wouldn't cost to much to bring it up to scratch:(

I remember we were at the pool when a boy was found missing. we all helped search & he was found dead on the bottom of the pool. it was so dirty no one could see him.
I think it was closed after that & dunno if it opened again.
cheers
yeah, spent many an hour there:thumbsup:
Just looked at the photo and I thought that it looked like Rivelin to me. I can't remember much about Millhouses so can't be sure.
Great photo though

Millhouse and Rivelin were about the same to look at, I remember a large wall or bank to one side of Rivlein.
But- this is definately Millhouses, it's the only place we ever went to in the summer. Rivelin was too far away for us in those days with no car. We used to go on the tram from Intake and change in Shefield.

OK, I'll take your word for it. Like you said it looks very similar.

I suppose what gives it away is the railway line in the background, you can see the signal wire poles. I used to sneak over the fence when I was a little older to watch the steam trains while my mother franticly searched the river thinking I had been washed away. Well you know what mother are like, take life far too seriously :heyhey:
Spunkee ,
Nice to read your comments !
It's fascinating , I think , how people's lives can often keep criss-crossing like that ?
Cheers !
Yes, My sisters' partner pointed that out. We spent our days out in Bradfield, happy memories. :)
It's Millhouses alright and thanks for the fabulous photo. Living at Wincobank, we used to catch buses to both Rivelin and Millhouses. I remember getting off the bus near the Wagon and Horses, back in the early 60's through to the early 70's.
Millhouses as I recall had the paddle boats, the paddling pools pictured, a draughts or chess board, climbing frames and swings and eventually a pool.
We used to love the place.
Ousetunes 01-08-2005, 14:05 A superb photograph, so full of life. You can actually hear the sounds of joy from the children in the water.
I walked past these pools not too long ago. Sad to say, each pool was covered in decaying leaves looking very miserable. It is such a shame we allow things to fall into decline.
The photo might bring back some nice memories and tears to the eyes of some (ahem, 'older') Forumers; unfortunately, a walk past these pools will bring tears to anyone's eyes they're in such a mess.
Ousetones ,
You're right ----and the same goes for lots of other , "bread and butter " things in Sheffield , as far as I can see , when I go there on a visit :-
Roads with plenty of pot-holes , museums and the library in town looking sad , very , very few public toilets , never see a park keeper [s] , litter everywhere , ponds with nothing on them to attract visitors , public transport to attractive places run down or maybe non-existent and hardly ever any police on foot.
I wonder what on earth the Council can be spending their money on ?
Albatross 01-08-2005, 21:40 A great photo of millhouses park Lostrider brought back some happy childhood memories for me thanks for that.
We lived at Greenhill and used to walk down Hutcliffewood then down some very steep wooden steps off Archer Road.
Greybeard 01-08-2005, 22:05 We took our kids there a few times in the summer of '63 whilst visiting my parents. Very evoctative, I think we have some photos too. Happy memories ! :D
Used to frequent the park a lot as a child and a teenager and vaguely remember them building the paddling pools, probably 1954 or 55.
