Lotti 12-06-2008, 11:52 AM Disgusting isn't it :( There was the actual video posted somewhere (either here or another forum, can't remember) and it was horrific. I simply can't understand how people can do it :(
JarvisCocker 12-06-2008, 11:55 AM I really shouldn't read stuff like this. First it upsets me, then I get really really angry. Words just fail me.
Moonbird 12-06-2008, 12:24 PM I feel sick now, not even going to bother saying anything!

They have also killed British soldiers in the so called friendly fire incidents. I reckon they are not very bright people in the american forces
Pedant 12-06-2008, 01:01 PM A bit of perspective would be nice here. Marines kill people all the time. Anybody who values the life of a puppy over a human seriously needs a head check.
Why is it totally different Daddy? Is it because Iraqis are dark skinned? Would you be offended if they were killing white people?
Nice video by the way, I see war is entertainment to you. Wanna see some puppies?

That's an odd thing to say, who exactly doesn't deplore their deaths?? I thought every right thinking person did.
Sweetcheeks 12-06-2008, 01:07 PM Wow, what big macho-men they are! Still, defeating defenceless puppies is probably their biggest victory to date, especially after being humiliated in Vietnam.

What does the deaths of people in Iraq have to do with needlessly tossing a puppy over a cliff? the two things are totally unconnected I would have thought.

Pedant 12-06-2008, 01:16 PM The threads not about that is it? I still fail to see the connection and how the one thing makes the other ok.
The thread is a pointless non-story compared to the lives of people. I'll ask again. Did you feel sick when the allied forces invaded Iraq and started bombing Iraqi civilians? This thread is nothing but sentimental rubbish.
If you can't tell the difference between the lives of puppies to that of the civilians of a whole country then you seriously do have mental problems. You shouldn't be posting on a forum, you should be in a padded cell. Remove that woman's keyboard.

I don't wish to talk about the bombing of Iraq, if I did I would have answered a thread on that wouldn't I? I suggest to you that if you do wish to talk about that you start your own thread instead of pointlessly arguing on someone else's, about something totally unrelated.
Oh you added to your "post" yes of course I can tell the difference between the lives of puppies and people, what was it that I said that made you think otherwise? I think that you are putting words into my mouth that were never there don't you?
And suggesting that I should be put in a padded cell and silenced just because I won't play your game and answer unrelated questions is plainly rediculous really!

I did. You could see how this was going to end. If the West must invade other coutries then they should at least make sure they have the wits about them to install a stable government. They failed in Afghanistan, got bored and moved on to Iraq. Disgusting.
And I also find the idea of supposed professional soldiers throwing an animal off a cliff for fun disgusting. Time and time again you hear stories about pyschos who used to torture defenceless animals before progressing to murder - what does this say about the so-called saviours of the world, the good 'ol US of A? I find any killing pointless, be it an animal or a human. Except Robert Mugabe - I've got a lot of time for seeing him being thrown off a cliff, preferably on fire.

If you're unwilling to acknowledge the deaths of thousands of innocent civilians yet say the world is mad and start ranting about a dead puppy. You are right, the world is mad, there's too many people like you. Stop being over hysterical about a puppy and get with the real world. Either that or put that keyboard down, you shouldn't be broadcasting your moronic opinions on an Internet site.
Had you bothered to look at the site that Venables links to you would have noticed there are other morons out there who have the Marine's personal details, why don't you research that and E-mail him if you're that bothered? I imagine though you will just post the odd crap comment about how the world is mad for the death of a puppy yet not acknowledge a war.

Looking at the video above, I'm undecided wether those yelps are the pup or another soldier.... could be either.
It also *appears* in the vid that the soldiers are out in the desert somewhere, given it is a young pup I'd like to think there is a good chance that the pup was already dead when they found it and the soldiers thought a vid would be amusing (if a little distasteful) as a prank.
I wouldn't be suprised though, given they are trained to kill people, that killing a dog wouldn't be a problem for them.
Pedant 12-06-2008, 01:28 PM I explained why it was different.

DaFoot 12-06-2008, 01:31 PM If you're unwilling to acknowledge the deaths of thousands of innocent civilians yet say the world is mad and start ranting about a dead puppy. ...
I don't think anyone here is even hinting at the notion that war and killing of other people is acceptable or otherwise.
Nor do I think anyone here has suggested that killing a puppy (*if* indeed they did) is worse than killing a person.
People were commenting on the news story that someone (ignore the fact they are soldiers for a moment) found it amusing to kill (or pretend to kill) an animal by throwing the animal. Wether that person is in a war scenario or some drunken kid ina run down block of flats is irrelevant.

Dead or not its a cruel thing to do..

No wonder suicide bombings are still all the rage in that part of the globe.

I think that it's a pity that you can't put your opinions across in a reasonable sensible way, the person "ranting" is you.
Isn't it a pity that you feel the need to push your point across by being offensive and insulting to other people? my "moronic opinions" are my own and just as valid as yours.
But you don't even know what my opinions are though do you?(in fact you don't know me at all but still feel the need to call me a moron) apart from the fact that I hate cruelty and I believe that if the puppy was alive it was inhumane to throw it off a cliff.
DaFoot 12-06-2008, 01:42 PM Thats not the point..

Not sure it can be considered cruel if the pup was dead.
Distasteful certainly, but given the horrors soldiers on active duty see everyday, 'playing' with a dead animal is insignificant.

Hold on there, I didn't call him racist, I asked him why it was different to the death of Iraqis. That was my statement, not an accusation, The Daddy failed to answer, if people give out bits of crap info and don't answer questions what is a person lead to believe. For the record I don't think or know if the Daddy is racist, I do think his reason for getting upset at a pup over a human life needs to be explored though. Fulapis claimed I bought out the race card, I disagree, I bought out a question asking for you and the Daddy to distinguish the difference between humans and animals, it was you and the Daddy that got hysterical over the puppy and you fail to acknowledge the deaths of thousands.

You jumped on something where you thought you would take the moral high ground. You didn't pull up my use of race as my use of race was a question based on my opinion. Why would a person stick their fingers in their ears and shout LA LA LA? It's text, it is read by the eyes not the ears.

You would never figure it out, you're too dumb.

Does it begin with B or a P? :hihi: he will be back but who knows as what!
Annoni_mouse 12-06-2008, 02:43 PM I asked why it was different, race was my assumption yes but I didn't call anybody it as was the claim. I do believe it's down to race, you don't think it's down to the way the Iraqis treat the Kurds do you that Daddy and others find the death of a puppy more horrific than the death of people? Or maybe they got a batch of dodgy dates or something.
I'm sorry but that post just a nonsence.
No one has said that the death of this dog is more horrific than the deaths of people in Iraq.
Just repeating a lie wont make it the truth you know.
The_DADDY 12-06-2008, 02:43 PM You would never figure it out, you're too dumb.
And youve got a big nose..
Well if its schoolyard insults then lets get on with it...
Or maybe you can behave like a grown up for a change..

You know i think it just may:hihi:
serapis 12-06-2008, 02:47 PM This thread proves how dumb a select few are. The death of a puppy has resulted in 74 posts. You people really should go out and get some air. I'm off to sign on, I shall see you all later. Don't worry I will be back. :D
Nice try, troll.
I think you will find at least half of the posts are directed at you and your feeble attempts to make this a racial issue but you don’t have the sense to see where you went wrong.
Laughable to be honest. I’m sure after the mods check the IP you are on, they will know who you used to be and issue another ban if it’s needed.
Jabberwocky 12-06-2008, 02:48 PM Its....
DAMN! No wonder I liked him! :D
irenewilde 12-06-2008, 03:52 PM Frankly, I wouldn't bat an eyelid doing exactly the same to the marine responsible.Sick.
Can I help you give them a push?
Pedant 12-06-2008, 04:41 PM Aww shucks, you think I'm Bartfarst don't you? He must get fed up of accusations of double identities. Not Bartfarst I'm afraid. This is my first account, really. ;)

No not nonsense. No-one has pointed out the difference between the death of a puppy and a human (which might I add was claimed on page 1). They have said it's different to the deaths of people in Iraq. One poster hasn't even watched the video and still claims it to be horrific. This is what happens when you make morons believe their opinions are valid.

I'm sure they will if I have duplicate accounts, unfortunately I don't. It is laughable, you claim I'm trolling yet you're arguing back. I don't know who's the silliest, me for winding you up and allowing myself to come across as a troll or you for arguing with a troll. I'm sure you will be back with a reply too. :D

No one needs to point out the difference between the death of a puppy and the death of a human because no one has said that because the one thing is sick and twisted that the other doesnt count. You're the only one who seems to think that showing sympathy for an animal equates to indifference to the suffering of people.
What the DADDY was saying (and I'm sure he'll forgive me for answering for him) was that the two example you are trying so poorly to link are totally different subjects.
Fishcake 12-06-2008, 04:53 PM If you're unwilling to acknowledge the deaths of thousands of innocent civilians yet say the world is mad and start ranting about a dead puppy.
I like how pedant takes what he wants from each post, twists it and makes it have nothing to do with the original posting.
Can people not be disturbed by the innapropriate actions of a trained profesional soldier killing an innocent animal AND be upset and disgusted by the atrocities of war or can myour mind not stretch that far?
Fishcake 12-06-2008, 04:55 PM The pup was dead, and possibly even a toy. Even if it were alive, then I don't think it's all that bad.
mholey - your posts are those of a young mind or a naive mind. ooooh look at me, I say shocking things to get noticed. Well done. we have all noticed you.

Fishcake 12-06-2008, 04:56 PM It didn’t take long for the racism card to come out this time did it.
The fact is the marine killed the puppy for fun, where as innocent civilians are not being killed for run. It doesn’t take a brain surgeon to figure that out, but I suppose those who throw the racism card around are none too bright neither.
I think we have disagreed before Serapis but I am with you 100% here. Well said

Fishcake 12-06-2008, 04:57 PM But overly qualified in getting hysterical at the mention of dead puppies in order to make themselves appear more human. I'll bet her and the Daddy are meat eaters too.
so if you eat meat, you must enjoy abusing animals. Great argument there, I'll wager you are part of a great debating society.

I am. I joined yesterday. If you eat meat you have animals killed in your name every day. Why not start a thread about that?
Moonbird 12-06-2008, 04:59 PM No not nonsense. No-one has pointed out the difference between the death of a puppy and a human (which might I add was claimed on page 1). If you mean me I never claimed it horrific at all I merely said I wouldn't watch it, so what? get over yourself for Gods sake!
Fishcake 12-06-2008, 05:01 PM No-one did, that's why I'm having a go. If you can't distinguish the difference between a human and animal life then something is wrong with you. Do you eat roast baby sandwiches? You should learn the difference between animal and human life.
Fulapis claimed I bought out the race card, I disagree, I bought out a question asking for you and the Daddy to distinguish the difference between humans and animals, it was you and the Daddy that got hysterical over the puppy and you fail to acknowledge the deaths of thousands.
WOW Pedant is so full of nonsense its amazing. His arguments are just for the sake of it and smack of an anti social loner spouting rubbish to be noticed.
Your arguments (I will be polite here) are naive at best and generally laughable. The scary thing is I fear you may be an adult!

Hmmm. Much as I don't necessarily agree with Pedant's tactics on this thread, the meat-eating debate is an interesting one.
I never put in my objections when cases of animal cruelty come up on the Forum because, as a meat eater, I would feel like a total hypocrite.
I know very well that the animals I'm eating have lived horrible lives under intensive farming regimes and that they've been killed unnecessarily for my benefit. By accepting that fact I'm condoning cruelty to animals - hence I can't really get too worked up about puppies being killed. Yes, it's horrible. So is meat eating. I can't do one and whinge about the other.
Having said that, I certainly wouldn't make public assumptions about anyone else's habits and practices, or even expect other people to agree with me.
Fishcake 12-06-2008, 05:04 PM I'm sorry but that post just a nonsence.

actually studies have shown that people who are poor liars don't usually elaborate when challenged, they just repeat the same thing. Well done Pedant for making your BS easy to spot.

chem1st 12-06-2008, 05:07 PM What does the deaths of people in Iraq have to do with needlessly tossing a puppy over a cliff? the two things are totally unconnected I would have thought.
I believe the incident happened in Iraq, what troubled me was, the anger expressed for the throwing of a puppy (it appears to be alive) off a cliff, whereas no such emotions are expressed on threads about people getting killed in large numbers (or if they are, not much).
I don't agree with either, but Im suprised how worked up people can be about a puppy being killed by a soldier, whom is quite likely to also be killing people (and show as little regard).

a good point I have discussed before. This is why I make sure the meat I do eat is from ethical rearing and (if the advertising is correct) killed humanely and while they are alive they are looked after well.
This said the prices of these are higher.
Sorry straying from original OP here
Pedant 12-06-2008, 05:08 PM Its not nice, but how many people are being killed in Iraq, people don't deplore their deaths.
Totaly different..
This is a grown 'man' throwing an defencless animal off a cliff to a certain death.......
For fun!!!!
My point will always stand. Why is it totally different? Answer that and you can accuse me of anything.
Yes I have been ridiculously harsh on this thread but why be subtle for morons who assume the death of an animal is somehow different to that of a human. Soldiers kill people everyday yet you've all got your backs up about a puppy. Now who's full of BS?

I know where your coming from, and to a certain extent I agree with you.
However, I do think there is a quantifiable difference between someone killing and maiming animals for their own sadistic pleasure and someone killing an animal for an end product, such as meat or perhaps to protect their livestock etc.

the great Mahatma Ghandi said this:-
The good man is the friend of all living things.
and this
The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.
and this
What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans and the homeless, whether the mad destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or the holy name of liberty or democracy?
Did you read the full CNN report on this incident. The Marine Corps is sending this young man back home to a probable dishonorable discharge, an end to his career, and hard time finding a job wirh that DD on his record. What would you have them do? Put him up against the wall and shoot him? Send him into Leavenworth for 40 years. Someone commented that we must have a low breed military. My son is a member of that military, and like most everyone else is certainly not low breed. But you people are so holier than thou, while youths in England stab people to death for no reason.

OOOOOH! How awful!! All Marines are so low life etc etc blah! blah!

I don't think this needs to become another US/UK debate, does it? A lot of the posting on this thread is intemperate - I wouldn't take it personally.

So wind your neck in and get off your soapbox.
But i agree with your comment about people over here stabbing each other for no reason.
Its very worrying to think what it will be like when my kids grow up..
Please keep on topic - this is not a thread about Iraq it is about a specific news story. If you want to debate any other topic then it needs to be done on the relevant thread.

Sorry. Must have missed that thread about the cat killers. No intention for yet another US/UK debate and not taking it personally by any means. Just wanted to let the one or two members who post crude, knee jerk reaction comments about anything American that wanton and senseless cruelty is not confined to any one people or any one culture. Worse yet they reduce a whole group of people down to the level of one sadisitc idiot.

While I wish we could avoid war, I certainly admire and respect anyone willing to put up their lives for the rest of us, from firemen to soldiers.
I certainly don't think we have a "low breed" of soldier, quite the opposite. We have more standards in place than ever to make sure things like this don't go unchecked.
Is the point really that this is a soldier being such a freakish monster? Is the point that it is pretty sick for anyone to do this.
Lets not make this a soldier bashing thread. those guys do a great job.
Full respect to your son and his colleagues, I hope he returns safely to his family.
all the best

Damn right they do. I can think of a lot more people we should be putting on the front line to get shot at. Perhaps we should bring conscription back, stop the professional dedicated soldiers getting shot.

Harleyman, don’t worry about it, The US has its inbred idiots and so does the UK. Nothing new. Those with an ounce of sense look further than news headlines.
Agent Orange 13-06-2008, 01:33 PM An interesting thread in the sense that such outrage, deservedly so, has been expressed at such cruelty towards this animal, but a story claiming that the US military had accidently killed 11 Pakistan soldiers had been totally overlooked. Is the act of killing a puppy more outrageous in society than 11 soldiers being accidently blown up?

the difference is accidently killed and puposely killed. Both are terrible things. Because one wasn't mentioned doesn't mean that no one cares, it means people die in and around warzones and while this is a terrible thing, it is not as shocking as a soldier acting like a trainee serial killer.
Lets not make this seem like a posting from tree huggers who care nothing about human life, this is simply saying isn't this sick. Not its wrong to kill animals but ok to kill humans. Why do you people keep twisting it to read something it doesn't?
At least make the arguments relative to the OP

Absolutely.
This video was presented in such a way to garner an extreme emotional response from the viewer - and as can be seen by the majority of the posts on this thread it certainly did its job.
What the motives were behind this video, we may never know, though I suspect that it may well have been made/released to highlight the perceived hypocrisy of the western public - i.e. 'Isn’t it terrible that this little puppy died yet hundreds, nay thousands of civilians die everyday in far worse circumstances and no one objects'
But I believe that if that were the motivation behind the video, then it is hopelessly crass and naive.
Of course people will react to an incident like this - its human nature and most right minded people would consider the killing of an animal for nothing more than sadistic pleasure horrifying. But to imply from that the same people who are outraged by this video will care little for the plight of humans killed in conflict is utterly fallacious.
To put it another way, if the 'victim' in the video was an Iraqi prisoner, the outrage would have been a thousand times more vociferous.
People react to horrors they see - unfortunate for those who die 'off camera' sure, but sadly, this is human nature.
Fishcake 13-06-2008, 03:15 PM Absolutely.

You're not seeing the point. The soldier did what he did, deliberately, while the Pakistan soldiers where accidently killed. If the US had deliberately killed those soldiers for fun, them Im sure SF would be creaking under the number of posts condemning it!
Plain Talker 13-06-2008, 06:33 PM Agree 100%. This is only a puppy.
I don't agree that it was "only" a puppy.
It was still a living, feeling, creature, and as such deserved to be treated kindly, and not cruelly.

Following discussion, it has been agreed that this thread should be moved back to 'Sheffield Pet owners'
chem1st 14-06-2008, 09:37 PM That makes no sense, its about something that happened in another country to animal that was probably not a 'pet' and as such should be in general discussions, it is nothing to do with sheffield at all.

The thread was actually posted here in the first place and had a different title, but it was moved into general chat, that is why the first few comments were more about the puppy than anything else!
If your not happy you can contact the helpdesk and ask for it to be moved yet again
