When we first got Layla she started weeing and pooing in the house. She goes for walks in the day her last at 10:30 up again at 6:30am.The back door is left open too.She knows to go out and does her wee we praise her but she will then wee in the house again:confused:Every morning I wake up to it:(Santino never does it in the house so we are finding it hard. Also when we take her out for a walk she won't do a poo she waits till she gets home:confused:At the mo with the op we know it has been difficult for her but she has done it since day 1.She is 10 months old

We sometimes have a similar problem, we take her out for a walk where she will have a wee and poo, and then maybe an hour later she will have a wee in the house.

I think its to do with the hot weather, as she is drinking more, especially after walks, and so probably needs to go more.

I leave the back door open when we are in and often she goes out there to do it but still has accidents inside.

We also sometimes wake up to a nice suprise in a morning, but i do feel that is our own fault as we never really crate trained her so she doesnt try and hold herself til the morning. May have to revisit this as she is now 8 months and we should be getting her out of the habit.

Sometimes I think that leaving the door open actually blurs the difference between the garden and in the house, and the wee's that get done outside may just be done as the dog happens to be there anyway.
Back to basics for your wayward pooches I'm afraid, soon after feeding.. wee time, after sleeping..wee time, after playing..wee time, and from there on about every 2 hours..wee time, you need to go out there and make sure that they do it and lavish loads of praise and the odd treat on them even if you might appear mad to the neighbours doing so :D.
For night times you may wish to consider crating the dog, this does help a lot with many dogs and their weeing habits, and would only need to be a temporary measure until the dog is consistantly clean.

:help:Just an update.Layla is still weeing in the house:(We take her out in the morning about 6:30,she has a wee , about 8am breakfast and we let her out for a wee.She is really good while I am out for 3 1/2 hrs.I let her out again she does a couple of wee's then she wee's in the house 10mins later:confused: She goes out again after tea and then a long walk or trip to the park for lots of wee's.Again just before bed.She is good all night though.Yesterday she did 2 wee's in the house.I have never known a dog wee so much.Could it be a nervous problem? Or because of the op? She still flinches when you go to stroke her even now so we are thinking it could be nerves is this daft?We praise her loads and ignore her when she does it in the house. What are we doing wrong?

I think it might be an idea to ask your vet. It does sound like she is weeing a lot.

Weeing is done as a sign of submission or appeasement so if she is afraid, she may do it. This is usually done however, when you're there and the dog feels intimidated by your presence.

I would certainly ask advice from the vet but bearing in mind she's always done it, it would seem odd that it hadn't been picked up by the vet before.

What op was it? If she was doing it before the op it shouldn't be the cause of it but my bitch did become incontinent following her spay. She doesn't squat when she wees in the house though, it trickles out while she's relaxed or asleep.

As far as what you're doing wrong - not necessarily anything :) Different dogs are different so it could just be that what you're doing is totally right for the majority of dogs but Layla just hasn't quite cottoned on yet.

I would be tempted to spend time teaching her a trick to do before you let her out so that when she wants to go out she comes to you and does this trick (for example sit and paw, or go to the door and bark or something) - please think carefully about what you want to encourage!

This way she communicate to you when she needs to go out and then you can keep the door shut during the day and let her out for wee wees.

If she goes in the house, don't punish her or anything (I know you're not) but do move her outside, even if she's just finished, quickly move her outside - she may begin to associate toiletting with outside this way.

Also - watch her like a hawk - all dogs give off signs they're about to toilet, but some are so subtle we don't see them. Look out for sniffing the ground, moving in circles, pawing with one paw at the floor, or doing the 'john wayne walk' - you can also watch closely to see what it is she does before she goes and as soon as you see anything like this, move her outside.

Always go with her outside, if you allow her to go out for a wee, waiting by the door and praise her when she gets back to you she may associate the praise with coming back to the house and therefore get confused.

Also be sure to clean the floor thoroughly when she's done it so she can't smell where she's been before otherwise she will be more inclined to go in the same place.

Hope this helps.
