I was told best not to - as apparantly when they shrink back they can cause subsidence etc !!

We hade a large monkey tree/pine tree in the front garden and
when we arranged for it to be removed the tree surgeons just cut the trunk just under ground level and advised as above!!

You mean that you want to stop it sprouting/shooting again?

What species/age of tree and what diameter stump?

... and when was it cut?

You could always pay a tree surgeon to come and grind the stump out. Should take about an hour for a large stump.

The old fashioned way was apparently to bang some copper nails into the stump - as the copper dissolved into the tree sap it would kill as it it moved through the tree's system. Not sure whether it works or not though!?

The old lady who used to own my house had a liking for trees. There were loads of them in my small back garden. They were as high as the roof and the neighbours hated them because it stopped the daylight and made 4-5 back yards cold and dark.

After cutting them down and getting rid. I drilled loads of holes in the stumps with a brace n bit, and filled them with oil. After a year or two the were all srivelled and rotten and crumbled to dust when I hit them with a spade.
