One reason is because it is really hard to squeeze someone's throat hard enough to prevent all blood flow into the head (because blood fresh from the heart is at quite high pressure) but it's comparatively easy to block the passive flow of blood back down to the rest of the body and back to the heart (because that's mostly passive and gravity assisted) so there is a net gain of blood and so a rise of blood pressure in the head area for every heartbeat that the veins in the neck are compressed.

The same is what also causes petechial haemorrhaging on the face and in the eyes when someone is strangled.

My original career path was going to be 'degree in biochemistry, masters in forensics, go to work for the police' before I took a detour into molecular biology and medical microbiology after the bachelors and headed off into the world of medicine and work, so I did lots of reading about stuff.

Twist it off in an anti clockwise direction and it gets all messy, yet twist it off clock wise and it comes off neatly with all the little innards attached.

Lol, Im glad you don't live in sheffield anymore, do you strike up these sort of conversations on a bus with total strangers, cos i am the one people who feel the need to talk come and sit next too me lol. Ive had some strange conversations in my life, but yours beats them all lmao.

I used to quite like sitting next to strangers on the bus and asking them things like `When you eat crisps, do you sometimes accidentally put them in your gob the wrong way and end up slicing the roof of your mouth open?`

I started to feel a bit daft when people didnt reply, just got up and moved to another seat. Id try following them but the driver usually kicked me off the bus.

Could you change the title to: "Do people's eyes bulge when they're strangled?" and add a poll? It'll give us all something to do today lol.
