Does anyone know what's happening with this? I've just noticed that Sheffield Planners have written some planning guidelines on the site which is usually an indication that a Planning Application will be imminent. For anyone interested the guidelines can be found here (http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/index.asp?pgid=25006)

Just a sideline to the main topic.
The camp at Redmires has a connection with one of Britain's best known mass murderers. John R.H.Christie was stationed there during the 1st. World War era, In fact , I think he met his wife , Ethel , on a bus in Sheffield.
Another connection was that Ethel's sister lived on Windy House Lane , Manor Estate , and after Christie had murdered Ethel [amongst others] and plonked her under the floorboards , he wrote to his sister-in-law in Sheffield saying that Ethel , herself , was unable to write as " she has arthritis in her hands ".
If only that was all she was suffering from !

Update from Radio Sheffield website (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/south_yorkshire/4455911.stm) .

Ex-prison camp under the hammer
The site of a former World War II prisoner of war camp in Sheffield is going under the hammer next month.
The city council wants to dispose of the nine acres of land in Remires Road.
An earlier move to sell was withdrawn after concerns by residents about the site's use, so it will now be offered on a long lease rather than freehold.
The council says this means the plot can only be used for horse grazing, agricultural purposes or for recreation or sporting facilities.
"These restrictions will allow the council to seek repossession of the land if the terms of the lease are not upheld," said David Howarth, principal surveyor at Sheffield Council.
The Redmires Road land will be part of an auction at the Magna Centre in Rotherham on 19 May.

Is this the Sportsmans playing fields that we're talking about?

Is it the field at the back of the Sportsman or the woods where the POW camp actually is.

I would have thought the field which is a shame because a lot of organisations use it throughout the year such as the dog agility competition in June.

What about walking the dogs and the kite enthusists, our dog thinks it is her field.

Then theirs the threat of gypsies buying it, sounds daft but it is the Sheffield council.:(

Yeah, if it is the field BEHIND and the woods then thats ok, but if it is actually any of the Sportsmans fields then thats is a shame.
Had a lovely day a few weeks back as I was flying my kite with a friend; there were dog walkers, model aeroplanes, footie, radio controlled cars AND 2 hand gliders all using the field together. A really shame if this was stopped - although we don't know what sort of person is actually going to buy it....

Lets club together :)

Having re read the report it's jogged my memory and I'm sure it's the land at the other side of the woods, after the gypsy camp.

I remember seeing a for sale by auction sign there last year.
It's where the kids go on their motorbikes.

I'm sure the Gypsies will be putting in a bid and extending their static camp!

Council need to be careful.
