Basically there is no way to stop them but you can cut them down considerably. If you continually chase them off squirting them with a hosepipe, and making sure the fences don't have holes in by putting chicken wire around them it can make a difference.

My garden has been a through route for loads of local cats all winter and they have dug up most of my small lawn and crapped all over it. I cleaned up all the crap and patched up all the fences, I also cut next doors hedge so they can't hide under it any longer and there are far fewer now and it is actually possible to use the grass again.

My parents tried one of those sonic cat scarers, but some of the local cats did not seem to be bothered about it.
I think they should add a third to any household's council tax if they have more than one cat.

Thats a bit harsh isn't it? I have two cats (rescued) and if my neighbours come to me and tell me that the cats have been using their garden as a toilet then I will go and clear it up. I think this is one of those things that is annoying but can't be helped. My cats have a litter tray and when I first introduced them outside I kept the contents of the litter in the back garden to encourage them to keep marking their own territory.
I think the idea of orange peel is a good idea they don't like the smell of that and spraying them with water will discourage them.

Don't put anything on the fence which will injure them because they will cut themselves and need to have expensive operations to get stitched up. You could finish up liable, unfortunately.

The trick is to make your garden far less disirable to cats. Stop up the usual cat entrances, clean up the exisiting cat poo. And scare them enough times with the hosepipe and they will get the message. Cat's are stubborn not stupid and they can be trained, I have done it.

That is very nice of you.
Unfortunately where I live I have a neighbour who avaids all contact with anyone and will not even say hello in the street. Another who swears their three cats never go out after dark, and that only accounts for 6 of the dozens of cats which I have seen in my garden.
How do I know which owner to ask, and what about the cats from other streets which go through ?

What are you going to do, explain to your cats that they should not go in that particular garden ?

I like cats myself, but they are an utter menace to anyone who wants a garden. It is especially bad in terraced housing where there are more cats per square metre, and especially when so many tiny back gardens are covered with paving, leaving my grass as an oasis for them. Some of my neighbours have an extremely tiny back yard.

When I had a cat you didn't get many cats in my garden as she used to chase them off, was once sat on the back step with a pint of cider and she knocked me flying into the shed when she bolted out of the kitchen to chase off a tom, squeals and fur everywhere! (the toms, not hers)

SO the answer is, GET A CAT!

I do understand your frustration. If I could I would come and clean up the mess for ya!!:)

We have the same problem, our neighbour has the most gorgeous cat but she seems to love our garden and we find poo every so often. Unfortunately the dog usually finds (and eats) it first :gag: But as there are a few cats in our area, we don't know whose door to knock on. I might try the orange peel idea, sounds more 'dog safe'.. though she will probably run off with it.

Generally chasing them away whenever you see them will also put them off coming in, I simply walk up to where they are and they've got the picture. Especially as they don't like being caught in a hidey spot.

Cover any entrance areas, make it more difficult for them to get in so they avoid the area - I successfully did this at our last place, it's not possible now though, but I will be doing what I can to put them off.

Also, in terms of crapping in your plants, buy some of those gardeners green sticks, snap them into 15cm lengths and stick in the ground, you need to place them at most 15cm apart. The idea is they get a surprise when they try to sit down to poo. It's worked for me here and the last house.

Although I don't see why I have to spend the time and money making sure other people's cats come into my garden. How about I go round all the streets and ask for the owners to cough up?

Didn't think so.

I have got a real problem with cats in the garden, thats been getting worse over the AST couple of years. Anyone bought one of those things that sends waves out to scare cats?

PS I know some ppl will say this is cruel, but I don't see why I should have to clear up other people cats mess!!

Thanks

Simon

Best suggestion is to get a cat, the others will then re establish territory and at worse you will only have your own cats muck to clean up.

Even if litter trays are provided many cats will not use them if they are cats that are allowed outdoors. Regardless of some of the comments on here, it is very difficult to tell a cat it cannot go on someone else garden, there seems to be a communication problem!

However, like many suggestions, squirting water, cat crystals, orange peel are all worth trying. There is a is also a plant you can buy that the cats dont like the smell of so that may be worth seeking out.
I know its a pain and if you are a gardener must be really frustrating.
Hope you solve it without causing any pain or distress to the cats.

I was once told to take the labels off empty pop bottles and fill them up with water.

Leave them lying around the garden (in the places that the cats tend to poo) and their own reflection will stop them doing it.

Worked for my cat, but then my cat is as thick as ****...

Il second that, there are hundreds of cats, and i could not hazard a guess at to who even one of them belongs to! So i taring all the cats with the same brush and want to get rid of them all!

So know one has really had any luck with the sonic things?
Thats what i was really after, a one off cost, that doesnt look too bad and that i dont need to do anyting about, i dont think that the orange peel would look too nice, i have gardens to both sides, and the back and a passage, so trying any type of fenciung is out of the question really!

Does anyonne knoe if you can plant cactus outside?
