View Full Version : Does anyone remember the band, Radiation?
Just read in the Star that lead singer Colin Lumsdale has died age 51.
The group was apparently well known in the eighties. Sorry I don`t remember them myself.
I remember watching them on the club circuit - use to do Fade to Grey and similar. I was only just thinking about them a couple of days ago.
RIP
Iron fairy 14-06-2008, 01:09 I was a founder member of this band from 1979 to 1981 the original members
were, Steve Whitehouse (drums), Bruce Butler (bass Guitar), Chris Franklin (Lead guitar), Peter Rhodes (Lead Vocals), Colin joined the band as a sax
Player along with Simon Ellis on Trumpet in March 1979.The band was originally a Six piece professional soul band and was based in South Yorkshire. The Bands First gig was Gleadless Valley W.M.C. in July 1979.
Colin Lumsdale eventually became front man, band leader and later introduced his electrifying stage show at the the beginning of 1981 when, we entered a battle of the bands competition for EMI Records and came 2nd.The Line up then was Coiln (Lead Vocals) Chris (Lead Guitar) Bruce (Bass) Richard
(Keyboards) and Steve (Drums). The show started with CARS by Gary Newman and Colin performs his robotic dance routine then came CUT A LONG STORY SHORT by Spandau Ballet, Colin then introduced some his original songs starting with SUBWAY LODGER followed by FIRST TIME then MY LAUNDRETTE DISASTER and finally STIFF AND COLD.We return for an encore and play TURNING JAPANESSE By the Vapors. A Band called the GENTS did won the competition.I still have the original VHS video recording of this concert and some early photographs of the band in 1980.
Colin was an extraordinary person and will be remembered for his exceptional
stage performance which astounded audiances all over the country. I left the
band later in 1981, they became a very successful until 1983 when they split, and went to south Africa.
RIP Colin we all miss you

Hi, Sammie, I have some band photos and the one's from the benefit if you would like them. Send me an email address and its done. Dont know how we will do this without showing your email address to the world!!! Well Sheffield anyway! Not recommended! I have to post 5 times before I can post the web address (which is ****) try putting these things together in your web browser -www dot radiation uk dot org and see what happens. I knew I could fool this system!!! I have also be in touch with a fan who is going to send me some stuff, will let you know what turns up. Apparently the lads are going to give radiation another go! And all seem keen on the idea. Watch this space Eh!
Take care

Is your mum called Debbie and did she live in Woodseats in the 80's
ruttingjock 15-09-2008, 13:31 Hi - i was the keyboard player from early 1981 and worked with Colin, Steve Whitehouse, Chris Franklin and Bruce. I joined when the original trumpet player left. We did all that Spandau Ballet, Gary Newman and Ultrvox stuff and filled Crookes, Dial House, Woodseats etc.
Just heard on Facebook about Colin and feel pretty low about it. Those were great days for a wee club band from Sheffield. I didn't follow them out to SA so lost touch in 1983.
If any of you are out there - drop me a line - Richard T.
mickricho 07-01-2010, 16:13 Scarlet Timpani -I remember seeing them play at Steeleys.
it was scala timpani, i was one of the robotic dancers for them after doing robot for radiation, scala timpani was alista from radiation and russ i think he was called from vision, i still have their single somewhere...good days.

I used to play in a band with Bruce Butler in the late 70s, he was a lovely fellah and a fantastic bass player.
masi31061 12-01-2010, 17:59 i bought the single "Tall Chairs" in colley club
masi31061 12-01-2010, 18:02 what about "Vision" anyone remember them?
I know Chris Franklin. Absolutely fantastic guitarist!! and a great bloke too.
I saw several Radiation gigs and was very impressed, they had a good stage show with lighting rig, smoke machine, costumes etc. They were rumoured to be pulling £300 - £400 a gig which was very good at the time. One of the songs I remember was Bowie’s “Port Of Amsterdam”.
I saw them c1982 at the Woodhouse Central WMC and it ended in a riot. Fighting started mid gig in the amongst the packed crowd, the troublemakers threw their pint glasses up in the air hitting the ceiling and showering everyone with beer and glass, then the tables and chairs around the dance floor went up in the air. The band fled the stage and the house lights came up on a strip-light haze of smoke, punching and bloody linoleum.
We were near the stage so there was no way out of the club for us except through the fight so we climbed onstage, went through the curtains and joined a worried looking band in the dressing room. Fighting moved to the car park and as we watched from a distance a couple of police cars arrived, the first one was lifted underneath one side by the assembled crowd and rolled over. The other sped away for reinforcements.
In ’89 my mates and I recorded some songs in Steve Singleton’s studio on West St. His engineer Dave claimed to have been Radiation’s guitarist but I've seen no mention of a Dave on this thread??

I remember Chris well! If you see him tell him I am in contact with Steve Whitehouse... " I'm Linda & Susan's brother" that may jog his memory...
Still use one of his Guitar exercises today 25 Years on!

Thanks, I assume he heard what happened to Colin?
The tragedy never stops.... Colin's youngest daughter Danielle was murdered in October, she was 25. A few people have been arrested but still not been chargered with murder... South Africa for you!!! The Police are a joke!
Pleased to hear Chris is still playing and doing well... I bet those guitars really are the great.

richardwlh 23-02-2011, 19:38 Does anyone remember Radiation playing a song called Beware The Night? I wrote this song with Dave Cowles in 1982/3 and have a cassette with their recording on it. I don't know any more details about Radiation other than what I've read on this forum. Be very interested to hear any stories concerning this.

P.S. let me know if you receive it Ok.
I recently got to know Chris Franklin who was in Radiation and he's by far the most exciting guitarist i have ever seen. He's just incredible, right up there with the big names to my ears and as a valve amp manufacturer i have heard a good many. He's in a band called Black Toad, check them out.
