Most teams start from Under 7s Upwards as far as im aware!

Your Son could join a junior accademy i.e just to learn the basics!

Im sure if you search for Accademy teams junior u7s- sheffield something should come up

far too young, any football training at that age is glorified babysitting

I dont think thats right mate depends on the football coach and how good they are.

have coached kids of that age before mate, most have difficulty running in a straight line nevermind giving them a ball! kids that age are better off dribbling round the garden.

I feel very sorry for you being so quick to judge without knowing the facts, you won't win many friends on this forum with that attitude.

My 5 year old newly adopted son has requested to play football and as a nice kind parent I'm trying to find out where he can play. At his age I would not have left him there without me....just in case his coach turns out to be like you.

thanks for your help in finding a group/team

My kids club (Brinsworth Whitehill) run an academy but the minimum age is now 6 (boys & girls). It used to be 4 that way a child could have a good couple of years being coached ready for the U7s. I think one of the reasons they altered the age was due to the high number of kids wanting to play with not enough (qualified) coaches to teach them. Clubs do run accademys for 5 yr olds try www.sheffieldfa.com (local official fa website) to find details on teams local to you or give them a ring they should be able to tell you clubs that are local to you.

I'm not being quick to judge and i do know the facts as i have coached hundreds of kids from the ages of 5-18. Unless a kid has genuine natural talent kids that young don't get that much out of coaching sessions as they want to mess about / pick their nose / poke the kid sat next to them. Basically anything rather than listen to what they are being told. In my opinion parents of kids that age would be much better off taking their kid in the garden or to the park and just let them run around with the ball making sure that when they kick it they use their laces or the side of their foot. When they are 7 or 8 then get them involved with a team or academy.

I agree to a point with Sport Billy my lad had 2 years in our accademy and has just had his first season in the U7s. While the accademy has helped him immensely with team play, passing, positioning etc and to an extent his skills. However you should still take your child to your local park (or just in the garden)for a kick around for him to concentrate when his mates are not around as this will develop his individaul skills better than any training session.

There are football sessions run on Mondays at Tapton School during term time. 4-5yr olds @ 5-6pm, 6-9yr olds @6-7pm. A good introducton to playing with others before joining a team. PM me for name and phone no. of the coach. Have you tried the soccer sessions in the holidays run by Team Theme - my kids loved them when they were little.

I think Greenhill (http://www.greenhilljfc.com/) run an Under 6 team . My youngest son played in their Under 8's team, and we were very impressed with the whole set up.

thanks for agreeing!! you're right regarding the passing, although half on the kids think they are christian ronaldo and just dribble with their head down!! you can tell kids where they should be etc, but they don't develop spacial awareness until 9/10 years of age which is why you get 1 ball with every kid round it at under 7's 8's etc!

my point re babysitting still stands, for every kid that loves football who wants to be there you will find a uninterested kid who is there because his mother has dumped him for 90 minutes so she can go to the gym!

Thank you for all your help...

I don't much care if he can actually play football, we have a large garden but only a sister to play footie with and thats not always enough. He wants to kick a ball around with other kids.

I have been in touch with Abbey Lane and they said that they would try to start up a group, but as yet i've heard nothing.

The groups on a monday at tapton sounds great, but sadly monday teatime is the only day all week we can't sort out because of other committments.

I am going to get in touch with greenhill to see what they have.

Thanks again

Has anyone got any ideas about a group/team that my son can join? We live near Abbey Lane in sheffield. Football is great fun for kids of all ages, the sooner you can get a ball at their feet the better.
At 5 years old football is not about being competitive but is about having fun, making friends and keeping active, brinsworth whitehill take them if they are in Y1 or 6 within that academy year.
SWFC at shirecliffe also have a great development centre which teaches them fantastic ball skills in a fun environment and they take them at 5 years of age, our friends son goes there and he is only 5 years old and he loves it.
Times are 4.30pm - 6.00pm monday and wednesday, it is at shirecliffe just off shirecliffe road cost £3, this is far better than brinsworth whitehill and nearer for you.
the kids are split into age groups at swfc and so they are with kids of similar size and ability, the coaches are funny and the kids love them, give them a try.
