View Full Version : Supplies advice
*Peaches* 09-06-2008, 11:17 As some of you know, I rescue and rehome guinea pigs on a regular basis, but recently have had to turn some away because supplies are becoming so expensive.
Does anyone know of anywhere in Doncaster I can get decent bales of shavings for less than £11 and bales of hay for less than £4 that would deliver?
Can't help you with the delivery side of things but a horse supply shop (don't know Donny that well) for shavings (your looking at about £5-£7 for a compact big bale) and a farm for the hay (the stuff I gave you yesterday is a slice from a £2 big bale, there is usually over 10 slices in a bale).
Is there anyone with horses in Donny who would pick you one of each up from their supplier and drop it off for you?
*Peaches* 09-06-2008, 11:43 Not that I know personally
Anyone out there on the forum? I would offer but I'm not sure I could be reliable enough to come all the way from Sheff on a regular basis. How long do you think each would last you?
*Peaches* 09-06-2008, 11:46 A bale of shavings, about 2 weeks depending on numbers, Hay lasts longer, about a month
So if someone dropped you 2 shavings and 1 hay off a month, that would cover you?
Anyone nearby that can help?
Recently I've been branching out into small furries supplies (thanks Ami_j)
The largest shavings I do is a 20kg bag (Canac giant) and that's £10.25. That's including delivery or pick up from my stall outside the corn exchange.
hels1977 09-06-2008, 11:58 Can't help on the hay but the thought occurs that shredded cardboard may be cheaper as a bedding alternative (my brief research says it would be okay for piggies but I don't know if that's true). I get a huge bale of that for £5 from the local farm shop, I imagine any horsey farm shop in Doncaster may well be able to advise further.
This is the stuff I get: http://www.walmsleypremierbed.co.uk/ 1 bale fits in the boot of the car and I imagine you have many more cages than I do so I'm not sure how long one bale would last you.
*Peaches* 09-06-2008, 13:46 I don't drive so collection from the stall wouldn't be much good Helly, sorry.
I tried the card before, it wasn't absorbent enough for the pee pee's.
i know of a place but cant let you know of it til my brother is back perhaps they do it i could give you their number? just i know its past robin hood airport cant think of the name or address sure i have the telephone number i buy horse hemp from there for my tortoises a bale costs i think it was 8 pound or 7.50 also they do deliver but not sure on the cost
I have been having the same problem in sheffield, costs of hay is the one for me!!! and now some of the food has gone up. i don't feed mine gerti gineapig any more as its not that good for them but some of my visiting ones need it as its their normal diet its gone up from £17,99 to £23. in a few months!!! I don't drive either so have to rely on someone to deliver it
As i'm a kind soul - and it's for charity, let me know where you are.I have some hay (for the horses) i can drop you one off.
We used to shredded paper and neswpaper, at the time we had a commericial quality shredder to keep up with the 26 pigs we had wandering the lawn.
It might cost you a cuppa tea on second thoughts.

Guinea pigs - we started with one. Then we rescued "oh i think its a boy" which turned into a girl with 4 more and on it went.
26 gp's and a rabbit - i didn't mow the lawn for years.
seriousy Peaches - i can drop a bale of hay off for you. I just bought some for horse feed, they won't miss one bale.
*Peaches* 09-06-2008, 15:55 Oh Willman you are an angel

don't you have to be insured to do that?
*Peaches* 10-06-2008, 07:07 Ok, just didn't want suing for a back injury :hihi:
I can't guarantee a time today - but if you aren't in I'll leave it somewhere safe. Although it's likely to be late afternoon by the time i get everything else done.
*Peaches* 10-06-2008, 07:44 There's an ally way between my house and next doors, it *should* be ok there :)
Thanks Willman I owe you one x
holidayhutch 10-06-2008, 09:36 We have some large bales of horse bedding which is dust extracted shavings and wheatstraw combined. We are in Barnsley and pass through Doncaster fairly regularly. If you wanted to buy them from us you'd be welcome.
*Peaches* 11-06-2008, 07:24 Can you get me a pic so I can see what it looks like please?
holidayhutch 11-06-2008, 08:58 You can see more details of what I mentioned here http://www.bed-down.co.uk/products-excel.html
*Peaches* 11-06-2008, 09:00 What is the "fragrant oil"? I'm a bit concerned with anything scented
holidayhutch 11-06-2008, 11:02 It's lemon and have been assured it is completely safe with small animals. We did contact various manufacturers for full info before choosing the bedding we use and also checked with our vet and a specialist vet in St Helens before opting to use it for the small animals - and all of them said it was o.k and safe to use.
*Peaches* 11-06-2008, 11:19 Ok, I was just concerned incase it was eucalyptus, as a lot of places seem to use that. How big a bale is it and how much?
Didn't get yesterday , Obviously P.
Sorry - flippin' horses.
Definitely Friday though.
*Peaches* 11-06-2008, 12:56 lol no panic, I shall be in all day friday I suspect, unless a miracle happens between now and then and the labour fairy takes pity on me :hihi:
