The best thing in Rotherham is the road out to Sheffield.

Eastwood is mainly a council estate that seems to span for miles and miles and most houses look the same and are all very close together. It's like any council estate - it depends on who your neighbours are, how they behave, how they keep their gardens and how loudly they play their music. Strong solid buildings as a whole, plenty of nearby facilities.

1) I used to work at Backer on the eastwood trading estate. The funny smell is the KP nuts factory.
2) In rotherham they say fost instead of first
3) The charters arms is a great rock pub but there are lots of drug problems around there, watch out for pick pockets, I once had some equipment stolen when I was doing a PA job.

If you have a postcode enter it on www.upmystreet.com

That will give you basic info, like how much the houses in the local area sell for and what the schools are like.

It will give you some idea.

What do I think of Rotherham? Not a lot.
There's an historic church on the bridge though, one of only about 6 left in the country.

Theres a good looking guy that goes by the name of "Slimboy Fat" that lives there :D

Not a nightlife type myself (not anymore anyway) but quite a few rate the new nightclub thats taken over the "Zone". Take a look in the Going Out in Sheffield forum for more info.

As for shopping it depends what you are after. The Town centre has gone down hill over the last 10 or so years but if you are driving theres always Parkgate, Crystal Peaks or Meadowhall if you prefere the bigger store atmosphere.

As with most places theres good and bad areas. i am not going to do like a number of the sheffielders on here do and say "Where I live is brilliant but any where else is sh*t".

 Gawd knows how many times this topic has been done; and always ends up as "us & them" bickering
with the tired old Rotherham-is-a-district-of-Sheffield and
what-about-the-chuckle-brothers blah blah blah - YAWWWWN!

Please can we have a thread merge Mr mod, ta! :hihi:

No offence but everytime i drive through eastwood i, without fail, see an abandoned or smashed in old car. What you make of this is up to you but im glad i dont live there.

I am currently in the process of saving up enough money to move out of Rotherham. Again, what you make of this is up to you, but bear in mind i work weekdays, evenings and most weekends and most of my worldly posessions are up for sale on ebay.

Oh Kittykat, you can't tar all Rotherham with the same brush as Eastwood.
It would be like saying all Sheffield is like the Manor.
The Manor's reputation only comes from a scum minority.

It's just that they are prolific in their deeds.

Rotherham is as good as anywhere. You have to take the good with the bad.

ps. post your ebay links, we'll bid on them & increase your savings

Eastwood isn't a good place to live. There's lots of chavs and crime. I'm not saying that all who live there are wrong 'uns.

Rotherham town itself has been going down the pan for a number of years with businesses moving out of town. Plenty of places to drink.

I work throughout South Yorkshire and would say that Rotherham is positively cosmopiltan compared to Barnsley or Doncaster - but about 10 years behind Sheffield.

It has its good points and bad points but anyone who says its ALL horrible and crappy is just generalising, the villiage where i live is just as good as any in sheffield.

My dad grew up in East Dene/Eastwood area and all we've ever known it as is 'rough' and/or 'dirty' but not quite as bad as 'Dalton' or 'Thrybergh'. There are plenty of nice places in Rotherham though, so don't judge it all the same way. Everywhere has it's rough areas - Sheffield included.

I ventured into Rotherham today to do some shopping - the first time in almost 12 months I think, and was struck by the inordinate amount of dirty people around....

....WHERE HAVE THEY ALL COME FROM?????

I know Rotherham has never been the style capital of, well anywhere really, but a lot of the people in Rotherham today looked like they hadn't seen soap, shampoo or a hairbrush in AGES:gag:

Also there were a group of teenagers on the bus home high as a kite on something (cocaine judging by the amount of sniffing of noses that was going on) at 11am in the morning. I got off the bus after four stops and waited for another one, it was not a pleasant experience.

Are these just Rotherham related or is it occuring elsewhere:confused:

If you 'don't hardly see any people that match that description', then I assume you do see some??

Even though I do live in a 'part' of Rotherham, yesterday was the last time that I will be going in to the Town Centre, I'll stick to doing my shopping with the 'inbreds' (as you so politely put it) who you've given all the shampoo to - cos at least they'll be clean then won't they??

Aww, so funny - not!!! You're probably one of the people I saw that needed a good wash and lessons in how to brush their hair - which is why you've felt the need to be so offensive and insulting in your responses - and resorting to foul language does not make you hard or clever, just merely shows up your lack of intelligence at being able to post a reasoned response.

Oops I'm sorry, that's how you generally respond to anybody that doesn't share your small minded view of Rotherham as the greatest town on earth:loopy: grow up!

I visited Rotherham from Meersbrook yesterday to see the newly reopened Clifton Park Museum, which was well done and fun for all ages.
Then we had a picnic in Clifton Park, again very nice, great flowers and no idiots around. Then we had a stroll into town, visited the well stocked music & video library (better then ours) and went shopping. Pepole seemed friendly and there were the same amount of chavs/idiots/inbreeds as in Sheffield.
Leaving Rotherham was easy as the traffic was pretty light.
Seemed alright to me, didn't see any nice coffee houses though and not much culture, but what small non-touristy town has that?

I could care less if you slag sheffield off or not - I DON'T LIVE THERE, I LIVE IN ROTHERHAM YOU FOOL - Sheffield is not the same as Rotherham (but bigger, duh!!), Rotherham is rapidly going downhill in a lot of aspects (and has been for a while) - if you would take your head down from out of a certain lower part of your anatomy you might actually notice this:suspect:

Thanks for asking scottf...

The museum's displays about iron age and prehistoric Rotherham interested me most. Roman times and the display about Victorian food was good too. There was some awful china to marvel at and a stuffed lion and polar bear that young kids will remember.
There were several interactive (computer based) exhibits that were good (and working). You could look up old photos on the computer or fly around a roman fort. The mock-up of an Anderson shelter from WWII was fun too, you could press a button and hear war being declared or local reminiscences.
It's free, with free parking and has a nice cafe and grounds.

Eastwood is in amongst the list of places that aren't so nice, but i wouldnt know the full story, as dont live there, just generally drive through it, and hear the odd story, so it may not be all bad...like someone said earlier, prob just depends on your neighbours etc.

There are parts of Rotherham which are ok, obviously im biased in saying mine, but i think its nice enough!

As said before, the town centre has taken a nose dive in recent years, never really stood a chance after the opening of Meadowhall!

All in all, there's good and bad points too it, like everywhere else in the whole country!

Oh and Underground, you really do need to calm down and stop jumping down everyones throats and making a fool of yourself after they make a less than nice comment about the place, it really doesnt help how people will perceive you!! Although, that might be too late already?! ha ;)

SlimboyFat
13-04-2005, 21:16
Could I just add that Sheffield Centre is not as good as it was before Meadowhall. It's on its way down too.

I would say that the % of rough areas in Rotherham and Sheffield is about the same...

For every Eastwood theres a Manor...
For every Dalton theres a Pitsmoore...

I do visit Thrybergh quite a bit (Sisters and Mates) and although there are definately some rough parts, some parts see no trouble at all.

Either on this or one of the many other "We are better than you" posts I quoted statistics on the % of people that where victims of various crimes. I quoted all the statistics given (believe it was from Up My Street) and Sheffields was higher than Rotherham on every one. The Sheffielders decided not to comment.....
