Hi people, Im going to be studying at Sheffield university in Septemeber and me and a friend are looking to get some accomodation there. We were thinking of having a house with a garage and it doesn't really matter if its 2, 3 or 4 bedroomed or whatever cus we could just get a freind to move in with us. I was thinking council housing but not many have garages and being a student, theres probably no chance of getting one. any advice people?

Cheers

Ian

I would suggest not going through a student landlord. If you go through a normal landlord then the rent is cheaper, there is a wider choice. You may end up living further from uni and filling in loads of council tax forms but that may be worth it for your garage.

I disagree. There are loads more student houses about than privately rented. Most private landlords will stipulate non-students.

You will probably pay more though.

Thanks for your advice guys! the idea that me and my friend had was that we were thinking of having a garage where we could keep our expensive bicycles as we are keen cyclists. Also, we are interested in martial arts and were thinking of having a heavy punch bag in there as well as a table tennis table.

lol it all seems very stupid and trivial to go through awkward proceedures just for those reasons but what the hey.

anyway, the thing is i am concerned that we would be subjected to strict rules and policies of the landlord and also, im a little weary about the landlord exploiting us and messing us around.

however it seem like a very good idea, i just need to know how to go about looking for rentable properties.

cheers, Ian

Have you tried the Private Sector Bureau folks at the Uni? They will know if any of the properties registered with them have a garage. http://www.shef.ac.uk/housing/private/index.html
