Hey Ho

I have some chilli and pepper plants I have grown from seed and want to pot them up to grow in the greenhouse. Problem is I have never grown them before and dont know how big they grow or which size pot. Put my toms in old flower buckets in new compost, but think this might be a bit excessive. Any advice appreciated.

I grow chillis and a 7" pot is ok. They dont like too much room to root.
I have lalso tried pinching them out and it just delays the flowering/fruiting with no extra benefit. Different types grow to different heights. Just stake them before they get too heavy.

If you can find some Bolivian Rainbow Chillis they make a fantastic multi-coloured display.

Would chillis last over winter in a greenhouse? We've grown a couple from seed, and bought a couple from a nice guy at Bolsterstone Plant Sale. He suggested decent sized pots - ours are in about 10" at the moment, plants are very small, but good idea to stake them up.

I have tried 10" pots but they grow more compact and bushy in a smaller pot.

I have over-wintered Chillis in a conservatory, but I wouldnt bother again there is no advantage as seed sown ones flowered around the same time. The chillis get very leggy if overwintered. I read somewhere on the internet that in hot climates they develop into a small tree if left.

I just dry a few chillis and plant the seed the following year. Put two seeds in a yogurt pot. remove the weakest one and repot into 7" pot when they get to about 9" tall. Feed with tomatoe feed when the first fruit sets.

Enjoy.

This was a useful email chain. This is the first time I have grown chillies and was wondering what size they grew to and how much room I would need to allow in the greenhouse - thanks

We have some chillis and bell peppers on the go in the greenhouse. I think we may have left it a little late to plant the seeds though. They are quite small when compared with the tomato plants planted at the same time which are almost as tall as me. When is the best time to plant the seeds. We started them indoors just after easter.
