Well, if your specifically trying to create gif files then you will need to pay for the software because the lwz compression formula that is used in .gif files is nolonger free to use.
eg: if someone makes 'image manipulation software' and wants it to be able to create gifs they need to pay for the priviliege. thats why programs like GIMP dropped support for gif in favour of .png files which are similar but better (support more colours)
Theres very likely a gif plugin for gimp but you may have to pay a few pounds for it.

Gimp is the "Gnu Image Manipulation Program"

it works on Windows/Macintosh/Unix so it really doesn't matter what the computer is, and its very very good software, comparable to adobe photoshop in many ways, but gimp is entirely free and legal.

If you just want to play around then i'd go with a Paintshop pro free trial. I think the trial is 30 days and earlier versions of the product can be found cheap enough.

I've got an old copy of Ulead's Gif Animator 2.0 (on a .net magazine cover from 2001) that I've never used (had already bought a newer version;)).

You can have the CD if you want (or if you can't find a freeware app)?

The CD also contains full free versions of Cool3D 2.0, PhotoImpact 3.02 and SmartSaver 2.0, plus demos of the newer versions.
