Packard Bell computer. Windows 98se, Pentium 2

Couple of years ago we decided to have a CD writer installed.

Got a Sony one and PC World installed it.

It was excellent. My Teenage lad was in heaven and even I could use it.

Then the computer became infected with Spyware.

Bloke at work from IT department fixed it but put a re-writing system called Nero on, instead of the one that came with the Sony kit.

Anyway, it doesn't work properly, takes ages (20 mins to read a disk) and then CDs stick.

My lad is not happy at all, as you can imagine.

So I said: ''We have the disk from the Sony kit, why not reinstall their own re-writing programme from it?''

Anyway, I tried. Put the Sony disc in the tray, pushed it in and it began to whirr.

Up came the egg-timer, the whirring continued for about 90-120 seconds, then it stopped, the egg-timer went to be replaced by the arrow and the programme was not installed.

As you can see, I'm no computer expert at all. In fact anything but.

However, it must be possible to reinstall the Song programme. So where am I going wrong?

Please help me to get the Sony programme back for my lad.

It sounds like the disk or the writer are knackered. Does it read other disks OK?

firstly the program wont install just by putting the cd in, you need to open the cd up (Especially on 98..xp does this by default) start > my computer > d:/ (Assuming the cd-r is on the d directory) and then depending on the program on the cd it will either start installing or you will need to dbl click the install/setup.exe file....

Give that a try, although I personally think nero is the best you're gonna get...

if it is just spinning it's likely to be your writer as previosly said, so u can stop blaming nero & the bloke @ work.

BobDaBuilder,

Many thanks. I followed your instructions and the Sony re-write software in now back on and working. I would give Pitchard a can of salmon if I knew where you lived.

The software package is called B's recorder Gold5.

Some people might prefer others but at least Gold5 works, which, I'm sure you'll agree, is rather important.

Willman - no need to be so judgemental. The guy at work did remove all the Spyware and I don't think I blamed him for anything, did I?

Bob - you are a top man. Many thanks again.

if you havent already...get 'spybot' and 'ad-aware se' installed run them once a week and you should be spyware free for most of the time.
