this is all thats is left of what was called Mulligans Mansions A house that was occupied by a load of social misfits that they were always in trouble, it was a very large family and they mananged to ruin what was at one time a fine victorian house it was demolished in the early 60s If memory serves me right.the bricked up part was the entrance to the lower rooms and the cellars

As you can see I've asked the same question and have to say the idea of it being part of a house does seem a bit odd. If you look at the structure it doesn't have any other bits of brickwork stuck out making it look like a remnant of a larger structure.
I await with interest a picture of the mansion and in the meanwhile I will not allow it to give me sleepless nights.
Slightly further down the road the hillside was dug away and although there isn't much there now you could see the remains of a black wooden house door that had a letter box in it, now that looks house-like.

Ok sorry for the confusion, does anyone know what this bricked up doorway was ? Could it have been public toilets ?

I thought the bricked up 'doorway' that sazzlebrin was asking about is the one in onlyme's pic but that isn't where Mulligan's Mansions was, MM was where the little garden and viewing point is now. I seem to remember someone saying on Wallbuilder's thread that the doorway in question was incorporated in the wall to give entrance to another similar house that was never built in the end. But I have no idea. I should know really, having walked past there many times over the past 50 years ... but I don't!

Someone must know .. :suspect:

I love these mysterious old doorways and similar things.
There's one on the other side just before Heeley Bridge that has a small overgrown "garden" around it, but I think this might be the old entrance to Heeley Station.

it is in fact the old entance to heeley station it is a long dark tunnel approx hundred yards long with three offshot ramps which lead up to the platforms the ticket office was at one time just behind where the wall is bricked up I believe it was 1959 when the station closed and it was bricked up

I seem to remember public toilets there and indeed that may be the answer.
not been up there for sometime this bricked up doorway could have led to some steps that went up to the house that the BATES family lived in they in fact owned to brickyard and the brickyard on tadcaster way.
the house was situated where the end of the homebase shop is now.
BTW when I was a lad I fell of the cliffs behind the homebase shop

That's still there ... it's like climbing a cliff to get to their door ... I well remember when my daughter used to deliver the free paper .. like most kids, we actually used to drive along behind her in the car just to make sure she was safe! Half the time, I ended up delivering one, cos the house is miles away from anywhere else.
I don't remember any lavatories there, though

I have a distant memory perhaps in the 1970s of someone falling off those cliffs. Me and my mates would sometimes go to the cave there (if you can call it a cave more like a ledge) Can anyone remember the graffiti on the wall near where homebase is now saying a certain person is innocent or words something similar ?

Did you injure yourself? It's a long way down! I remember the writing daubed on the cliff face, can't remember what it said though. Also what an exciting place it was, behind the hoardings, it was almost like being in the country.

There were lots of gorse bushes and foxes dens, rabbits too, iirc. We used to take the dogs there to give them a good run about off the lead before it was developed. That was in the late 80s.

The graffiti looked like it was on the side of sombodys house up past the cliffs. There are lots of bushes there now so it would be no longer visable if its still there at all.

Must be different graffiti then. The one I remember was daubed in white paint, either on one of the flat slabs of rock near the steps on the right hand side, or on the brick wall retaining the steps ... can't quite remember now. Never took a lot of notice, tbh :)

I wonder if it was filled in or just bricked up. I love to get in and have awander around, see if anything is left of the ticket office or anything else.

Do you remember what the building on the other side of the bridge was?
It's now a car breakers place, but I seem to remember it was once a post office and I think it must've once been part of the station judging by its design.

One half was the local post office when I was a kid, the other half was various things including a sort of nightclub/coffee bar place. The Sunrise Club? Previously, but how much previously I don't know, it was the station house and booking office, so I was told.

During my childhood in the 50s I only ever remember the other part being the entrance to the station. I think the tunnels are still there, but I bet they're dangerous by now.

When i hung about round there in the early to mid 1970s there was indeed a post office and a bingo hall next door. The scrapyard was still there but was up the side of the bingo. Im not sure however what these building were origionaly. I can tell you there was a blocked off ramp up the side of the PO that went to the station. I would guess this building was also part of the old station.

I can add the old station tunnels to the list of places I want to explore before I die, along with The Norton Water Tower and those tunnels that go from the Cathederal to Sheffield Manor House via Pri Mark etc:hihi:

the bingo hall was the old cinema, through the railway bridge, across on the opposite side of London Road.

I remember the little building by the scrapyard being the Post office in the early 1970s, before it became a shoe shop (for a short time in the mid 80s), and then the offices for the scrapyard.

I may be wrong but I thought the building was the old heeley station waiting room/ticket offices?. Next time I am going in that direction by train, I must look and see what is left of the old Heeley station.

the writing said "dave" at one point but over the years it did change quite a few times. as regards to injury it was not to bad I severed my wrist on a baked bean tin and apart from that just cuts and bruises etc.

in answer to the question re the building. it was in fact part of the station complex if you could call the the station a complex. and when the staton closed it became a variety of diffeent things.post office etc it was for a short time a shoe shoe shop but that only lasted a few weeks. it was notorious for the famous TEENBAR around 1953 to 1959 or so not exact dates sp dont nobody take the dates as actual fact just approximations

I remember the bingo hall you mention across the road PT (old cinema) . I remember it being a failed scateboard centre as well before it was damaged by fire. Next door to the small post office (same building) was once a small bingo hall as my mum went there somtimes. It might have been short lived due to the Mecca on queens road offering much better prizes but it was there. The building seems to have been used as allsorts over many years. The only shop on that side i can remember sold shoes (at that time) was the army stores further along heeley but the time you mention i no longer lived close by. On the other side of heeley bottom there were three shoe shops in the early 70s. My old friends family owned the last one (langtons) now of course its the antique centre.

that's right, onlyme, I'm sure the signs for Langton's shop are still there.

Wasn't the cinema "The Heeley Picture Palace?"

I thought I remembered a fire there. Ponsfords furniture shop built their extension on the land that the cinema stood on, about 10 yrs ago.

Intresting picture, perhaps it was a house as Ricky36 seems pretty sure. To look at it now you could form the opinion its anything even an old sub station. Perhaps if anyone has access to pre 1960s voters registers it will show as an house and who lived there. I have come across the name Mulligans mansions before but that was on a Scotish forum, perhaps if this was an house the locals gave it this nickname? Like your self WallBuilder i would love to see a picture of it or even an entry in the VR.

There was a large underground part to the structure that stood there wallbuilder and what you see left is the entrance and retaining wall.

I remember when it was demolished the archway was bricked up using bricks from the house, but only to the level where the arch starts, they put a piece of wood in the top and 'someone' got up there a few years later and gained access. The council came along and bricked the rest up to put an end to that.

If you take a drill to the mortar you will find its only one layer thick and should be able to see inside.

PS, its got something to do with the large drain pipes as there's two big valves in there, when I say big I mean enormous.

My guess is the house\structure that stood there was owned or put up by the old water board, so there may be records there for examination.

As a house it really strange, part brick (my guess is that was put in by the water board) and the upper bit was wood and very cheaply done at that, a simple timber frame construction with latt siding and very large windows.

When you walk up Shrewsbury Road from where it crosses the Tramline, on your right you will see some bricked up gaps in the stone wall along the right-hand side of the road, which must have been entrances to pre-war Victorian housing which would have predated the now also demolished tower-blocks at the top of the road which overlooked Parkhill.
If you look carefully, you will find lots of old disused/blocked/altered doorways/gateways in retaining walls on roads going up the hills around Sheffield...
