View Full Version : Are Christians more honest than others?
Carlwarker 08-10-2003, 14:26 Saw something on Teletext the other night, stating that Christians are more honest than other people.
Jimmy Swaggart, Jim Baker and, guess who – Tony Blair – come to mind.
What about the concept of the afterlife? Major hoax, or what?
Moon Maiden 08-10-2003, 14:47 I think there are honest people amongst all religions just like there are nutters and freaks! (see Tony Blair)

Carlwarker 08-10-2003, 14:54 I should have put a 'tongue-in-cheek' effect on the post Moon - of course, being religious doesn't necessarily infer honesty, neither does being agnostic or atheist.
As for an afterlife max - I, personally am agnostic on this - who knows?

I suppose deep down I'm agnostic, too. My initial post was more to do with the emphasis that most religions put on the afterlife as a reason to be good. Can we not be good for goodness' own sake?
I notice that the recent Palestinian female suicide bomber wasn't promised 75 virgins for being a martyr.
Carlwarker 08-10-2003, 15:28 Apart from it's own intrinsic value - one of the best 'rewards' for being honest - is that you don't have to rely on memory.
Moon Maiden 08-10-2003, 16:47 what is agnostic???
Moon
Hi Moon,
I think 'agnostic' means that you've not come to any conclusion one way or another on the existance of god.
Or does it mean that you believe it's impossible to know one way or the other ...
I forget !!
I think it's one of those ...
CW ... define 'honesty' ...

You forgot to mention George Bush and Adolf Hitler (also a vegetarian, I have been told)!
Seriously, there are good and bad people in all religions. But before another debate starts, exactly how did they measure this statistic, by the way?

Honesty - the state of being honest - Uprightedness; truthfulness.
Honest – fair and upright in speech and act, not lying, cheating or stealing; sincere (of act or feeling).
According to the OED and other dictionaries.

You aren't referring to Page 346, Letters, are you? If so, I read every night, and saw someone writing about this the other day, and the follow ups were rolling in today.
Anyway, I believe that you don't have to believe in a STORY created thousands of years ago to have good moral standards, including honesty. Rules in the religion guide followers into living in a moral way, and I believe this is the reason religion was created in the first place - to control the masses by scaring them into going to hell if they didn't live that way. However, most people don't need to follow some story with no evidence as most people know the difference between right and wrong and have mainly good moral standards.

Christians are no different to anyone else, in the old days when I was naive, I used to believe that Christians were a cut above anyone else, but nothing could be further from the truth. You get Liars, cheats, twisters, perverts, disloyalty, thieves, backstabers, you know, a normal human being that one meets every day of ones life, but my, when I joined the Church!!! what a revelation!!!
HappyShopper 10-10-2003, 17:34 I think religion gets a lot of bad press. If a christian is a liar, it is not the christian faith that is at fault, it is the christian. We all have free will and if i decide to lie then that is my decision and I am responsible for that. A lot of people blame religion for a lot of the wars in the world. I don't think it is the fault of religion at all, it is the fault of the humans who go against their religious teaching and start the wars.
I am not particularily religious myself; I did go once but I never inhaled............
give me 10,000 belivers ile give you a cult
give me 10,000,000 ile give you the catholic church
i belive all religion in any form or notion is just a way of keeping the pesants down why else would all churches be built on a hill
the worst thing ever for the church (any church any religion) was education because now we can choose weather we belive or not
well thats my twopenath thanks for listening
