View Full Version : Views on Damon's please! Emilychee 08-04-2005, 10:08 Thinking of maybe going tonight but never been, so opinions appriciated! Thanx xamanix 08-04-2005, 10:17 Dont waste your money - its crap ive been twice - first time was ok but a was really hungery and could have eaten anything and the second time (about 2 weeks ago) i was advised not to go as it seems to have turned really rubbish. I went reluctantly as my boyfriend likes his meat and even he couldnt finish his meal! He ordered a steak medium rare - when it came it was well done he'd just had a tooth out so his teeth wasnt up to scratch that night but when we informed the waitress she said thats what you've ordered... No change of meal - no refund. naf unners 08-04-2005, 11:28 The place is vastly over rated been once to see what the fuss was about and it was rubbish. The decor was out of the 80's,the food was Ok but nothing to write home about.Dont waste your money would be my advice Emilychee 08-04-2005, 11:56 Thanks! Think we'll go somewhere else LoopyLou 08-04-2005, 12:06 Unfortunately I aree with the postings so far... food was a bit too greasy for my liking and at least half of my group didn't feel to well the next day.... but this was a few years ago. depending what food you are into - the indian restaurant across the road from Damons is really nice, a bit more expensive that your usual indian, but great food and decor. viking 08-04-2005, 12:10 Damon's i feel is overpriced. If you are close to Damon's, Try the Red lion at Todwick. youwhatref 08-04-2005, 12:23 I'll be one of the raritys and state that i really enjoy Damons, one of my favourite places and i would highly recommend. nick2 08-04-2005, 12:50 I think they do good ribs, but evrything else is a bit hit-and-miss. Shiesh 08-04-2005, 13:14 A woman at work suffered a really bad experience there only recently....they messed the order up, it took them ages to sort it, people eating at differant times, the food wasn't that great either ......then the next day she noticed they had debited her card for the cost of the meal 3 times!!!!! It was her daughters 18th and she was really disappointed!! I would look elsewhere...especially for special occasions!! monkeylove 08-04-2005, 13:36 they should get the whole place & drop it into a deep FAT fryer because thats what they do with all the food they should call it........how to be american cause when your there you know what its like to be a american fat-so owdlad 08-04-2005, 15:21 When it first opened Damon's was a novelty but since then it's gone downhill in quality and uphill in price go elsewhere, apart from the Amraj just over the road their food is good but your meal takes so long to arrive you need a haircut between courses. Strix 08-04-2005, 15:26 Originally posted by owdlad Amraj just over the road their food is good but your meal takes so long to arrive you need a haircut between courses. That's what's supposed to happen in a restaurant  It's supposed to be an evening out, not 'here's your hat, what's your hurry?' :suspect: owdlad 08-04-2005, 19:58 Originally posted by Strix That's what's supposed to happen in a restaurant  It's supposed to be an evening out, not 'here's your hat, what's your hurry?' :suspect: Not when it takes em a sodding hour between courses :( joey007 08-04-2005, 21:41 Disorganised mahem and rubbish food!!! ultracynic 09-04-2005, 08:16 shockingly bad - don't go viking 09-04-2005, 08:25 I cannot understand, after all this negative response, that it is still always packed out and you need to book in advance. Someone must like it manortopper 09-04-2005, 08:40 Last time I went; Table booked for 9pm - sat down to order at 10.55. Ordered well done steak - arrived very very rare. Salad (supposedly) included in meal consisted of half a tomato. Did I complain - you bet I did. So much so that it attracted the attention of the door minders. Would I ever go back? - not on your life. Worst experience I ever had eating out - by far. Rant over. viking 09-04-2005, 08:44 The only time we go is on family events, Birthdays etc. It is because my father in law is set in his ways and loves it there (He only eats steak) Left to me I would go to the Red Lion at Todwick every time,OR the Robin Hood at Ulley. Ousetunes 09-04-2005, 13:45 I've suffered at this 'restaurant' twice and shall never step back into the place. It's a bit like a Little Chef that (supposedly) specialises in ribs and steaks. Frankly, the trades descriptions act is brought into question here. This is junk, by numbers. Talking of which, the place would be perfect for Bingo because it resembles a Bingo venue - minus the decent food ofcause. A night out?! An insult, more like. deano 09-04-2005, 15:17 Awful place....like an airport departure lounge, serving up greasy "brown" muck!! never felt so unhealthy after eating a meal!! Mind you a work mate of mine swears by it:loopy: robbie 09-04-2005, 17:35 Originally posted by viking I cannot understand, after all this negative response, that it is still always packed out and you need to book in advance. Someone must like it McDonalds is always busy. Doesn't mean its good. sayz 09-04-2005, 17:41 Damons is overated mainly because of the free birthday meal it offers. Why not try Arbuckles they too offer a free brithday meal with a full paying adult. Enjoy! theimposter 09-04-2005, 18:24 I worked there when it first opened and they treated their staff like crap. Ive only been back once since and it was OK.....highly overated and overpriced tho Plain Talker 10-04-2005, 10:04 if you want decent grub, at a reasonable price, and steak or meat is your "thing" go to The Chequers on Eckington Road, Coal aston (just past Jordanthorpe). The Chequers does 2-4-1 adult main meals. Their mixed gill even overfaced my ex hub, who is known for his hearty appetite. I have been to damons, on a couple of occasions, and I agree with other posters that it is expensive (even if you claim a free meal for your birthday), and that the food is very greasy. I think things are just fried, en masse. (I am thinking the episode of the Simpsons, where Moe turns his bar into "Uncle Moe's Family Feedbag", and they show an entire meal, wine included being fried). I was not at all keen on damon's, service, food or atmosphere. I also thought that the place stank of burnt fat. I really did not enjoy the meals I have had there. Also (ok, ok, I know it's a STEAK restaurant!) they did not cater very well for vegetarians, there was no option for vegetarians when I went (nb i mean vegetarians, not pescatarians) I went back, to give them another chance, thinking "well, they were probably having an 'off' day". Sadly there was no difference. PT technophobe 10-04-2005, 19:34 this place it great for kids but thats it..... its ends there. The food is what I call greasy plastic just about everything is deep fried and you always come out feeling like youve just had a bowl of grease soup!!!:gag: Kev6686 12-04-2005, 05:36 Not too bad, Agree with other postings though. Well Overpriced not too good service and absolutly rediculous waiting times... I didnt realise it takes so long to deep fry crap :-) Saxon 12-04-2005, 06:27 Originally posted by robbie McDonalds is always busy. Doesn't mean its good. But at least its cheap, compared to Damons Jimmy O 13-04-2005, 10:40 Not cheap but very nice! tickledpink 13-04-2005, 17:09 well i really like it, friendly staff, nice choice and quality of food. and the cocktails are fab! if you go weekdays its half price cocktails i think its between 5-7. try the blue hawaiian or frozen margerita. if you go on your birthday, you get your meal free, but remember to take birth certificate. and you get a b'day cake and your even sang to............ would recommend.......... Strix 22-10-2005, 13:18 Bump...................... Sam @ Dearne 22-10-2005, 20:44 Very over-rated, was good in the beginning. The only reason people still go is for the free meal if its your birthday. The bill still seems overly priced then. If they didn't do that offer, it would quickly close. Leave well alone. SAM raganoonande 31-10-2005, 10:29 I must be in a minority, but I've always enjoyed it every time I've been. Last time I went, me and the person I went with, got a big table to ourselves. The food I had was gorgeous, but I did opt for something a bit healthier than the usual stuff. I had these chicken strips in golden breadcrumbs, golden rice, side salad (generous portion)and a jacket potato, and I thoroughly enjoyed every mouthful. The waiter we had for the night, was a young lad, and he was extremely helpful and friendly. We did go on a Saturday night, but the person I went with did book in advance. It does always seem a bit packed, and I think the one downfall, is that there does sometimes seem to be a problem with tables. I think you have got to book well in advance, not just turn up, because you don't stand a cat in hell's chance otherwise. I think it all depends on your experiences. I would advise people to eat healthier options, as the typical American stuff, is just greasy unhealthy food. ambient 01-11-2005, 12:55 You might as well go to mcdonalds and save your money. Terrible place. Bleurgh. Whitelight 01-11-2005, 13:43 I went Saturday, Never again. Table booked for 8.00pm sat down at 9.30 and the food was awful:gag: Damon 01-11-2005, 14:09 Damons, in my opinion, are great blokes. The restaurant, however, is vile. Iwork2shop 02-11-2005, 12:18 I think Damons is great. If you go on a weekday before 6pm some of the drinks are half price (wine and cocktails - not sure what else) and there's a big menu to chose from for 8.25 I think. This includes malt bread and onion loaf to start with and then a choice of 2 items which include chicken, ribs and scampi (can't remember what else) with fries or baked pootato and coleslaw or salad. There's loads to eat - I'd definitely recommend it. Johnh 06-01-2006, 12:06 Damons ... yuk!! ... Its a MacDonalds for grown ups! fruit&nut 06-01-2006, 12:14 iv been a few times,i used to like it but think its rubbish now, the half price cocktails are really good though  Johnh 06-01-2006, 12:18 It stinks of fried food when you drive past it, I often wonder how the people who live opposite cope with that smell every evening. Do they fry the cocktails Julie? fruit&nut 06-01-2006, 12:47 must do cos iv left there a few times sozzled:thumbsup: Cavellsuk 06-01-2006, 13:47 Like the ribs and wings hate the venue full of screaming kids and people looking to get a meal for nothing, also the plates are plastic, just use it as a take away like mc d's when feeling ribby, can only just stand being in the place for that amount of time ! bjshooter 06-01-2006, 22:00 Food is very greasy you feel like your having a heart attack by the time you have finished. It isn't all bad though a free meal and a cake on your birthday swings it for me everytime although it is still expensive. You could spend the same money and go somewhere much better. ANGELUS 07-01-2006, 02:11 Maybe its just me then, but I love Damons! We only live down the road from them and Amraj and I find both are lush. I love the burgers from Damons which have always been top quality when I've had one and the service has always been top notch and the staff friendly and helpful to me and the missus. Hell- even the takeaway is great :) And those Onion Ring Loafs- to die for... I havent been in a while, do they still do them there? Only gripes I've got a bout the place- its a tad expensive and there are too many families with kids letting them roam about where people are eating and generally letting them pish about not giving a crap :( multiparvo1 08-01-2006, 14:39 You have hit the nail on the head! Its a kids playground, how someone hasn't had a plate full on their head I don't know. The last time my family went to Damons for a meal my husband visited the toilet only to have the door opened for him from the inside by a girl aged about 8 years who said "do you want to come in". He beat a hasty retreat and that is the very last time we will ever cross that threshold. Tony1 08-01-2006, 14:52 Mass produced crap, try somewhere like rossis italian resteraunt youwhatref 08-01-2006, 15:04 I'm with Angelus, i always enjoy Damons. Kids do run around but ever in the eating areas. THe free main meal on the birthday is a nice touch as is the cake. Food is a little overpriced but is generally very nice, aslthough the last time i went some was a little greasy. Plain Talker 08-01-2006, 15:05 Cavells, Angelus, Come on, the parents are paying top whack for their meal.. and you expect them to control their kids, TOO? whatever is this world coming to? (Removes tongue from cheek) Badly behaved kids are my bugbear, too. Why should I have my meal disrupted because a parent cannot say, firmly enough to its kid "Sit down and behave properly, or you won't come here again" (or words to that effect) PT sierraman 08-01-2006, 15:25 well said plain talker! youwhatref 08-01-2006, 15:29 Originally posted by Plain Talker Why should I have my meal disrupted because a parent cannot say, firmly enough to its kid "Sit down and behave properly, or you won't come here again" (or words to that effect) PT Because of selfishness PT. It is easier/better for the kid to spoil someone elses meal than their own. I apply the same logic to todays society and kids behaviour outside the homes. Tessika 09-01-2006, 09:39 I went 2 Damons a few weeks ago 4 a mates 18th and i swear it was the worst meal iv ever had. iv been a few times before and liked it, especially the onion loaf! but i wont be going again. out of 15 meals, we sent 6 back and refused to pay 4 them. we just drank cocktails insted so cant complain really!! nick2 09-01-2006, 10:25 The ribs are Ok, everything else is vile. Shazbat 14-01-2006, 22:05 Never been but the people I know who have been put it straight into one of two camps; either love it or hate it with a passion. Plain Talker 14-01-2006, 22:24 Put me in the Hate -it-with-a-passion camp. Everything was vile! Ta PT Bago 20-01-2006, 21:38 lol... Well, I'm in the camp that likes Damons. I do recall when it first opened, and the coleslaw was OUT of this world. Maybe it's also the fact that their services was great ? (Well, back then. It seems like it's changed now.) Their food is quite decent as far as I'm concerned. Things I like about Damons are their warmed bread, their cold coleslaws, and their ribs. I think Damons was the first restaurant to introduce this 'free meal for birthdays' in Sheffield, and I suppose that's why it's attracted so many families to go there for such occassions. Yes, these days, it does seem to be like a kids playground, but I suppose if you go a little earlier then it's different ? Can try their lunches as well. Maybe they should introduce a policy to say that no kids after a certain time or other. i.e. 9.30 pm onwards ? unners 21-01-2006, 09:39 Originally posted by Bago lol... Zaytsev 24-01-2006, 14:20 Well what can I say, Damons is ace been going 3 times a week since it opened. Customers service is spot on, my food is always ready for the taxi to pick up. I have to send a taxi now as after 4 years of eating their soopa doopa healthy fare I can't seem to get out of bed, it's probably something to do with my glands because I have ballooned to 40 stone and my knees can no longer take the strain. Oh well got to go now I'm having my bag emptied. Looking forward to Tea though. Yum Yum:hihi: bjshooter 24-01-2006, 14:26 PMSL:hihi: :hihi: Delboy71 24-01-2006, 15:23 I've been to the one in Lincoln and one in Sheffield and the Lincoln one is definitely better. oasismark 24-01-2006, 16:25 I went on my birthday last year and i enjoyed it. But only go if it's your birthday and you get your meal free. And only have the full rack of ribs Then it's worth it maggidee 24-01-2006, 16:48 Forget Damons! Expensive and too noisey!! Try the "Little India"at the top of Gleadless road. Clean,Nice food and lovely people. told_pinz 25-01-2006, 09:16 havent been to damons for a couple of months has it got that bad??? yes overpriced but when ive been in the past ive enjoyed what ive had no complaints at all,it does get packed and you do have to book in advance,we would go again. Bago 25-01-2006, 22:14 I must get myself down there for a plate of coleslaw and some nice warm bread. And on my way home nip to Sainsburys for some food to eat! LOL. Sarky, sarky. Well, for what it's worth. I still think highly of their coleslaws and warmed malt bread. It's not the mayonaised kind, and it's better than the ones you get in M&S because it's v. light. I think they make it rather than bought from a supplier. (If I'm wrong, then I'm damned impressed with their supplier !) I rate such things much higher than things like the oil-clogged 'oriental' starter I once tried in The Blue Room. (For the cost of a mains at Damons.) Have to try it to believe it. Whether it's healthy or not, if places like The Blue Room do deep-fried starters, than it's no different to try a decently priced place like Damons. (Which is one of the better chains, I reckon.) :) ;) Shazbat 31-03-2006, 16:36 My mum had her leaving do from work there last night and I'd never been before. Little bit stuck in a timewarp I thought. The table for 11 was booked for 8.15 but we didn't sit down till 8.45 at least, and the food was at least another half-hour coming. The meal was ok and it was hot, but when I was looking at the menu online beforehand (apart from picking apart their bad grammar/spelling, etc ;)) I didn't see anything that really appealed to me. I thought the regular portion sizes were a bit stingy, so to get value for money you'd have to go with a large and pay more over the odds. The starters and sidelines are a bit pricey as well. The coleslaw was nice, as I'd already been told, and we did get two free cakes though as we knew one of the waitresses ;) They just seem to want as many people in and out as quickly as possible, although by eating later we pretty much had the place to ourselves by 10.45. The whole "Happy Birthday" thing is a touch much after the millionth rendition. Overall not massively impressed and won't be rushing back there again. eyretile 31-03-2006, 16:40 I wont go again. I ordered ribs and they were full of bones:mad: crazyforit 31-03-2006, 17:20 took a friend of mine last year and was disappointed with the meal as we ordered side salad and both got chips!! the chicken breast was tiny and the ribs were BONES! as you can gather i like many others wont be going there again. Peapod 31-03-2006, 18:02 Been twice disapointed both times with food :gag: and price :o Won't be going there again  artstower 31-03-2006, 23:36 Don't know about the food but there is a serious amount of dog crap on the little path that heads down toward Crystal Peaks past the restaurant. immortalcoil 29-12-2008, 11:45 The Indian accross the road is crap! all food made from same 4 sauces. Nice venue completely let down by crap for food. Woodhouse Indian is a league ahead. Damons you get what goes. no consistancy but who cares when the ribs are that good! and birthday persons meal's are free on providing birth cert or other ID. Does red lion offer that? Does anywhere offer that? sierraman 29-12-2008, 12:00 The Indian accross the road is crap! all food made from same 4 sauces. Nice venue completely let down by crap for food. Does red lion offer that? Does anywhere offer that? I'll agree with that comment about the Amraj. Greasy microwaved rubbish and they even had the cheek to put service charge on the bill for the buffet!! We tried to move the table and it was stuck to the floor, when we eventually did it was anchored down with brown sticky gunge, yuk! Damons is basically McDonalds for grown ups! The fried food smell of the place from outside is enough to put you off! Hoddock 29-12-2008, 14:22 Damons is awful. Amraj is just chunks of meat with a Morrisons sauce on top. Rubbish. Becci85 29-12-2008, 21:49 My god.. I love damons.. the garlic prawns are to DIE for!! :o) rainbow sky 28-01-2009, 14:05 I had a really horrible burger there a few months bag, very mushy texture and tasted like a cheap frozen one, yuk!! has put me right off the place.:gag: Shazbat 28-02-2010, 19:04 Never been but the people I know who have been put it straight into one of two camps; either love it or hate it with a passion. Wow, I've been to Damon's twice since I posted this originally! First time, I just wasn't that impressed and couldn't get over how dingy and dark it all was, firmly rooted in the 80s. So, fast-forward to this week and the hubster's birthday - he's not from these parts so he'd just heard about it from colleagues while I bitched and moaned and told him in no uncertain terms that I really didn't like the place but, as it was his b'day, I'd treat him and hope for the best (on my part). You could smell the fat emanating from the extractors as we walked across the car park and yes, as expected, the interior was still the same as however many years ago (judging by the date of my first post, about 4 years ago). Such small downlighters in such a high ceiling! Hubster couldn't get over how busy it was. They didn't ask him to prove his age, but then they didn't give him a free cake either, although his main course was free. The food was ok, but their rack of ribs didn't quite stack up the huge rack he had in Planet Hollywood a couple of years ago ... but then we were actually in Times Square at the time ;) Overall, still not fussed and not in any desperate hurry to go back. |
