View Full Version : Why does everyone dislike first mainline
sigmar14 08-04-2005, 07:11 everybody seems to think that first mainline a crap but i prefer them to yorkshire terrier becouse they have better busses and more routes to places no other bus company serve and look at the 52's every 6mins can you beat that with a yorkshire terrier bus!!!! well?
sigmar14 08-04-2005, 08:52 isn't anybody replying or is it because you don't have a reason you just complaining all the time!!!
Their prices are a joke, £1.50 for a 10 minute journey, I'll walk thanks.
beansfeast 08-04-2005, 08:56 sigmar14, I suggest you do a search and see previous threads posted to the detriment of First... it's been done a hundred times by now!!

BoroughGal 08-04-2005, 09:28 I've never replied on any of the other bus threads, and I don't use buses, but as a driver, I dislike the way bus drivers in general (not just First drivers) feel the need to intimidate people in smaller vehicles. They pull out in front of you whether or not you were going to let them go, and edge into your lane knowing full well that they can do you more damage than you can do him.
I'm sure this isn't everyone but that's what I dislike the most.

these are the ones i found on there website
sigmar14 08-04-2005, 09:33 craig mason most of the changes what you have got are not happening e.g the 31 is carrying on as normal and the 22 is running hourly after 9pm i think you better look at todays toppics and see for yourself
x_LoUiSe_x 08-04-2005, 10:40 i think that the bus fares are extremly expensive i dont think they do a very good job organising the buses, i often wait half an hour for a service thats supposed to be every 8 minutes! but if it werent for 1st mainline id be stuck at home! i dont have a car so i rely on the buses. 1st mainline are the only buses that u can get unfolded buggies on which for me is a necesity as i am on my own when i use the buses i cant be folding up a pushchair and carry my little girl at the same time?
so it might not be the best service in the world but id be stuck without it!
and for those of u who hate it so much there is one simple answer.......
Dont use it!
or cant u do without it?

I'm not having a dig at you but(!) people managed before they introduced low floor buses for years.

Pushchairs were also less mechanical and also people were friendlier and would help a lone person with a pushchair and baby, nowadays you just get stared at as if you have an extra head!
bigflesh 08-04-2005, 21:12 I must admit, I feel that the Purple and Pink and White base colour compliment each other very well.
A.B.Yaffle 08-04-2005, 21:57 I don't have anything against first mainline in particular, but I do find that bus and tram fares are ridulously expensive if they are trying to encourage people to leave their cars at home.
For example, the short journey from Netherthorpe to Walkley and back would cost my family over £5 by bus... or probably less than 50p by car.
That isn't Mainline's fault... in my opinion it's Margaret Thatcher's fault, for getting rid of the cheap buses we had years ago when people could afford to use the buses and they were much better used than they are now.

DON'T FORGET ABOUT THE PETROL PRICES.

I haven't forgotten petrol prices. My car runs on petrol. I would love to leave the car at home more if I could travel by bus without having to pay at least 10 times more.
Me and the family [5 of us] to town and back by bus = £5-6!........
By car [including petrol, wear and tear, 3 hours parking] = £4.
£1 cheaper and no struggling with shopping, waiting for a bus that's overfull, half mile hike when we get home.
PLUS, if they haven't got what we want in town we can be at Meadowhall in 15 minutes and costs us practically nothing extra [another 50p maybe]
Yes, much rather use the well driven, spotlessly clean and efficient bus.

For the first time in almost 7 weeks, someone offered to help me off and *shock horror* it was the bus driver on a first bus! Perhaps they're slowly learning manners or maybe it was a one off, think its probably the latter lol!
if first werent about then some other company would replace the bus service. simple as.
a lot of the drivers seem to be arrogant...although i do have to say that over last few weeks i have had a few drivers that seem to actually smile and engage in a bit of banter so either they have some new drivers or they have injected a bit of humanity into the present ones. and yes the prices are daft..its pretty much the same price no matter if you go a few stops or stay on for another 20minutes!

yep! i usually just get stared at by them,
and u know whats even more annoying? when the bus stops and your trying to get off with ur buggy and everyone who was waiting at the stop just piles on! they thinks its ok? hmmm.........
i always let everyone off before i start to get on!
I think that alot of the time we dont like First Mainline cos of the attitude of the drivers, these days all they seem bothered about is getting behind their little screen and being as grumpy as ever,,,,when i was a kid,you could have a laugh with the drivers/conductors,you got to know certain drivers that drove the buses on your route and they had a good morning and a tara for you,,,now they cant be bothered to give you a smile,,,,,stuff em,,,i shall walk thanks!!!!
Whilst some of the drivers are pains - and that applies to all operators - I've found that most of teh drivers I've dealt with give as they get.
I will always say 'Good Morning / Afternoon / Evening' on getting on before asking for my ticket. I'll try and have the right money, and on getting the ticket I'll say 'Thank You'.
I find that this usually elicits some degree of civilised behaviour from the drivers, but if I get on behind some drunken oaf or someone who slams the money down and grunts their destination and then forgets to thank the driver for the ticket, the response from the driver can be a bit rough... :)
Whilst appreciating that there are some total prannies on the busses - both as passengers and drivers - I have found that MNL drivers have become much more polite ad helpful in the last 6-7 months.

The problem is as happens in most jobs if the employers treat the staff properly then the staff are happy in the main and this reflects in their work attitude but if staff are treated with contempt by the employer then this will affect the attitude of the employees in their work.

I understand that - I guess what we can do is to try and be civilised in a 'pre-emptive politeness strike'. Confuses the hell out of people... ;)

Why is it that when I get on the bus I am expected to pay a fare and when Waltheof school yobs get on the same bus only 3 out of 14 pay the fare ? Now this is why I dislike using First Busses. Is it a form of discrimination?
Classic Rock 15-04-2005, 15:06 I caught a bus for the first time in four years this week. Having moved out of the pub and into a house out of town I was pleased to see a bus stop three doors down. I caught the bus to work that morning and found it to be a relatively stress free 20 minutes for £1.20, I've not had to pay for parking, I was dropped off near work and the buses are every 20 minutes which is fine by me! The bus was clean and modern and the bus driver was friendly and answered all my questions pleasantly and was really helpful.
I've since caught the bus to and from work three times and have always had pleasant bus drivers who didn't seem to drive aggressively and did their best to be on time.
As a driver who never used to catch buses, this has been an interesting insight of the buses that I've always cursed and groaned at. As a driver I also got a strange sort of kick as the bus cruised down its bus lane past the queue of cars, which I'd have no doubt been sitting in if I'd decided to continue to drive to work and pay for parking.
I have no moans or groans to make, but then again its only been three days......

How can this be discrimination?,this happens all over the place and is an on going problem.
Some school children have the attitude that they can do what they like when they like to whom they like.
Chilldren like this are aware of the fact that they cant be thrown off the bus once they have boarded.
To throw them off the vehicle and leave them stranded(as they would claim),would without doubt result in good headlines for Sheffield Star and would certainly result in numerous threads springing up on this forum.
I can just see the title now "First Driver leaves school children stranded".

I trust you have made a typing error,as in another thread you have stated 3 out of 4 dont pay.
This figure would be a little more realistic than 3 out of 14 as this would mean out of a full bus load only about 15 would have paid.

Ive worked in the Public Transport sector for over 13 years and I have got to say that FSYB ( First South Yorkshire Buses) are the worst company I have ever worked for in my life.
No Weekend Rate , No Overtime Rate , Buses falling Apart Etc Etc.
amiee_sheff 20-04-2005, 20:16 i dislike the buses because i catch the 22 and numerous 80 buses.
the 22 well i used to have a problem with them as i have waited at the bus stop for an hour and 15 minutes before and one hasnt come.
the 81,82,84,87 - the only problems i have with them is that the bus drivers are often very rude and intolerant
i think the prices are ridiculous! £1.20 to get to town from hunters bar?!
and my sisters travel to school everyday on the bus they catch two buses each way that is 80p to get to school!
i just think that if they are going to charge that amount of money to travel on public transport which we are ment to be encouraged to travel on instead of driving then they should run a decent service and arrive on time and not all come at once
that is my opinion anyway sorry if any of these points have already been put across but there are so many replies i couldnt read them all.

Your Points are most welcome.
You will find Amiee that it works out cheaper per mile if you travel a longer distance on the buses.
e.g if you went from Town to Firth Park when I was driving it cost £1 yet if you went from Town to Hight Green (Extra 7 miles) there was just a 40p increase.
