My engine on my golf Mk3 1.4 has done 128 000 miles and does seem a bit tired. I have my eye on a VW Polo engine from a W reg polo, its a 1.4 engine too, and has done 25000 miles.

For £195. Is that good value?
And most importantly would it fit my golf!

Thanks

Isn't the polo rear wheel drive and the golf fwd...? if this is the case then you are gonna have no chance...all depends really on the mounts, I dunno anything about VW, my experience starts and ends with MBT's so I aint no expert by any means...but I can ask around for ya....

Another mate tells me:

whether the price the seller is asking for is reasonable or not depends on how much of the engine he is selling, i.e. does it come with the mounts, manifolds, airbox, afm, and other ancilliaries? If it does, then his asking price seems reasonable, especially for that mileage. Is that just a two year old engine?

Ask if the source Polo had the same type of transmission (manual or auto) as your Mk3, as an engine with an auto trans will usually have more vacuum hoses tapped into its intake manifold.

Also ask, if you can, why the engine is up for sale... Did it come from a car that was totalled? Was it involved in a severe front end collision? Some of the secondhand engines I've seen here had bent oil filter mounts, bent or cracked valve covers, cracked sumps, etc... Have a quick look at it, check the oil, plugs, hoses, etc, and general physical condition.

Will it fit? Most 4-cylinder watercooled VW engines can be interchanged without much difficulty, as long as you can obtain all the necessary parts for the conversion. But if the Polo's engine code is identical to your Mk3's engine code, it ought to be a straight swap.

It seems very odd to put a Polo engine into a Golf.

If I were facing the same choice I'd probably strip down and rebuild the original engine.
