I was born at Claremont Hospital in 1964 when it was run by nuns. I'm very interested to learn about the organisation (sisterhood?) who used to run the hospital, when they moved out etc. etc. and also whether it was a general hospital or a more specialised maternity hospital. I understand that the nuns now reside in a building next to the hospital.

Any info gratefully received.

I'm pretty sure they were 'Mercy Nuns' the Sisters of Mercy.

Running hospitals and schools were two of their specialities.

I worked there occaisionally, as part of a then nationalised industry, and the nuns, without exeption, were rude and unhelpful.

My mother always said they were very intimidating. Apparently when I was born they took me away for 3 days. My mother said she had no idea where I was or why I was taken away. Like something from the Omen! :o

My Daughter was born there in 1971, After having two births at Jessops hospital, Claremont was like a 5 star hotel, and the sisters were wonderful.

I had an operation there in 1987. Plenty of TLC. The nuns were there because they cared, not because they were paid. Mind you it was not free.

My Mum wouldn't go anywhere else for an op after she had been in there!
She loved it but didn't like it as much after the nuns had left

Claremont had a very bad reputation - very slack with essential care.
If the nuns hadn't have left when they did they would have been sent away..

I was born there in 1973 and my parents said it was wonderful.

Mind you, my brother was then born in Jessop's a few years later. I think the only reason was cost.

Yes, the Sister's of Mercy still reside in the house next door. It is named 'Highbury' and I know the Sisters that are in residence. I am sure they would be very helpful if you telephoned or called by for information. PM me for their phone number if required.

I was born there in 1962, my mom says it was fantastic in comparison to what else was on offer.

I ad an operation in Claremont Hospital in about 1989, which required an overnight stay. Watching the nuns floating up and down the main halls was a little wierd, to say the least!

I was in there in late 1947, at age 7 I had a hernia and the hospital waiting list was too long for my parents to put up with. So I had the operation at Claremont Nursing Home, and at that time it was a private hospital - treatment had to be paid for

Sorry thats all I can remember from 1947

I was born there in 1954, my mother was there at the time.;)

I can't imagine what the nuns did to her but I became the first non Catholic in my family.

My father always said that there was a Jewish family out there that had a lovely Irish child by mistake.
