View Full Version : Remember 'Yorkie' Smith?
'The Bill' seems to go on forever, characters come and go, never to be seen again unless on 'Coronation Street'. I'm not a great 'soap' fan but a good few years ago there was a character in the show called 'Yorkie' Smith, played by a Robert Hudson. I think his demise came when he went off his nut directing traffic, and for some reason he always wore gloves.
It was just after the pit riots back in Maggie's years.
Anyhow, Robert wasn't his real name, his real name was Mark, he must've adopted his dad's name. What ever became of him?
joanne5600 03-06-2008, 19:18 i know his sister charlotte is still going
HarmOKnee 17-07-2008, 15:38 He's still alive & well. Robert is his middle name and also his Dad's name. He had to use his middle name when he was at stage school as there was already another lad there called Mark Hudson. Not sure what Mark or Charlotte are doing at the moment though.
I asked this same question lol.http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=176413&highlight=yorkie+smith
Can anyone tell me which school he attended ?
I wondered if he was still doing the acting. I knew his Mom and Dad ways back.

HIigh Storrs School, Sheffield.
HarmOKnee 18-07-2008, 00:47 Mark & Charlotte are my cousins but I haven't been in touch with either of them for years. I think they are back in Sheffield at the moment though, my Mum saw their Mum the other day. I'll find out what they're doing when I see my Mum this weekend & let you know.
I used to work with Mark when we were students at the Mulberry when Mick Lee was the landlord. Marks mum (cant remember her first name worked there too).
I think he is now with the Hull Truck Theatre company and is doing well I understand.
Mark ws recently in a play with Cherie Lunghi and is a regular with Hull Truck
Treatment 17-09-2008, 15:30 Was he the very Thick Set lad with dark hair ?
Thats him, never sure why he walked away from "The Bill" but he seems to be a very respected professional now, although not as high profile as the "soap" stars.

xenia, Mark's ma's name was Sheila.
Nice woman i worked behind the bar at the Mulberry with Mark, i think his mum worked there as well. Mark Atmore was a mate of his who was there at the same time.
xenia, Mark's ma's name was Sheila.
i thought the bill was rubbish.

I used to enjoy The Bill at that time, and thought that he played a good part. :)
He was at the Lyceum some years ago in Up and Under the play about rugby by John Godber.
If ever they do a film or a series about the Sheffield Gang Wars what about Sean Bean as George Mooney and Rob Hudson as Sam Garvin, local talent genuine accents any other cast suggestions?
Just wondered if there were any updates regarding what Mark is doing at the moment?
I have seen Rob Hudson in two Hull Truck productions in the the last year. He
remains one of Sheffields finest stage actors who should be rediscovered by
televisions casting directors. Also heard he was a good centre forward in his
youth.
i thought the bill was rubbish.
What do you mean 'was'. It still is.
I recently watched East enders followed by one hour of the Bill. Complete depressive experience. I will NEVER repeat.
Why does an obviously experienced and talented actor such as Mark not get more work on TV and/or film? after the standards of the above mentioned "entetainments" he should find it easy.
Or has he chosen to perform more quality work onstage?

Did you ever go in the Royal Hotel Abbeydale rd, late 70s to early 80s. Or was it your double:huh:
No.. Don't think so.. I was at drama college in London from 79-82. R. x

Well if I told you that I'd have to kill you, cousin or not ;)
You probably wont remember me but I worked with you and your mum at the Mulberry on Arundel gate when Mick Lee was the landlord, Mick got some tickets and took some of us to a small theatre to see you in a play called "The ladys not for burning" you were the male lead, it was a bit heavy for me to be honest but you were excellent.
Am I right in thinking that you had a small part in "Chariots of Fire?
No.. Don't think so.. I was at drama college in London from 79-82. R. x
HarmOKnee 13-07-2009, 21:17 I did tell him who I was xenia but I didn't kill him - honest! :o
I'll tell you why he uses the name Robert. It is because there was another Mark Hudson already registered with the actors union Equity at the time and he had to use his middle name. The annoying thing is that he introduces himselg now as Rob..Now that ****** me off as he's really known as 'GEORGE' anyway. He's a miserable Wednesday fan and a hard man at the bar.I should know..He's my best mate! He's up for a role as a male stripper shortly in the new movie 'Emmanuele 9 goes to Hunters BAR' so watch out for the press..RGDS George.

:hihi: :hihi: :hihi:
Wouldnt he be more suitably cast as a policeman swinging his truncheon. Will it be shot on location in the upmarket Nonnas or the downtrodden Porter CottGE
What about a new film?
The Gang Wars
Starring Robert Hudson as Sam Garvin
Sean Bean as George Mooney
Dominic West as Sir Percy Sillitoe
A Shefield version of "The Road To Perdition"
If Not Why Not?
Caught Rob in action recently as McDuff in Hull Trucks latest production of Macbeth. Solid performance as usual in a piece of work which at times went straight over my head. Another actor originally from Sheffield played the lead with style and great presence. His name James Weaver anybody know of him. Aged around mid thirties from Frecheville.
Went across to Hull again a couple of weeks ago to see Rob in a John Godber play called Lucky Sods. Story about lottery winners. Great performance as always from one of Sheffields own. Again James Weaver also from Sheffield featured.
I see the 'Bill' is has come to an end. They did a programme on it's history, if you'd blinked you'd a missed it. Hardly any characters from the past, just the latest cast and crew. Poor old 'Yorkie', a forgotten man, never even showed one of his gloves.
