I have win 98 on my hdd and can't put it onto cd see here (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=35342) for details as to why...

When trying to install from my hdd it says I cannot install on top of my current windows (XP) so I should install from DOS...how do I do this...

I will be in need of the entire details as I have absolutely no experience of Cmd-prompt/dos...

Thanks again in advance guys n gals...

What exactly are you trying to achieve ?

1) An install of Win 98 from a local hard drive to actually reinstall Windows 98 or

2) Create a copy of a Windows 98 partition onto a cd ?

If you are trying to do 2) then forget it as dos does not support copying to any sort of removable drive other than a floppy disk.

Is it on a seperate hard disk drive? If not then I don't think there's any way you can do it. You could try making a dos floppy and booting up into dos, but if your hard disk is NTFS then once you've booted up you won't be able to do much because DOS cannot read NTFS.

Nah, I have win 98 on my hdd (Yes it's NTFS) and I have XP installed on it (Obviously..lol) but I wanna install 98 on a seperate hdd / partition..assuming it would have to be a seperate hdd though cos 98 can't do NTFS can it...?

Yammy...I don't have 98 installed @ all anywhere, just a copy of it on the hdd, and as for putting it on CD, I would like to but my cd-rw just crashes and takes my pc with it when trying...summit to do with the buffer...even @ 2x...

Hi Bob,
you can have 2 operating systems installed if you partition an existing hard drive.
eg :
you have a 10gb hdd, you can make 2 5gb partitions, install XP in one and win98 in the other. no need for 2 physical disks, but if you've got two physical hard disks then that will work fine too.

generally its easier to install the win98 one first, then the xp as xp always writes to mbr (master boot record) which tells computer what files it should load first after the bios.

if you install 98 on one drive then go through xp install process it should be aware of the 98 install and automatically create you the necessary configuration so that you just pick which one you want to load at boot time,

if you do have 2 physically different hard drives you have another option for picking which one loads at boot time:
you can just use your bioses boot device list to flick between the two hdds, eg : it will look something like this:

1st boot device: atapi-cdrom
2nd boot device: hda-0
3rd boot device: hda-1

if XP is on hda-0 then that will load first.
if you change the 2nd boot device to hda-1 and 3rd boot device to hda-0, then it will load hda-1's mbr first - which would be win98 in our example.
this way obviously isn't as pretty but works very well.

Hope this helps,
peace

Installing Windows 98 on a second partition is a nightmare if you already have XP installed. AFAIK, Win 98 won't install on to any NTFS partition anyway. Partition Magic may be able to help, but I think the easiest way would be to format your drive with the Win 98 boot up disk, use FDISK to create 2 partitions (FAT32) and install Win 98 on to the FIRST (C: ) partition (Win 98 does this anyway without checking). When this is done and Win 98 is set up, restart with the XP bootable CD in, select to install it on to the SECOND partition (D: ) and it will offer to convert the partition to NTFS or leave it as FAT32 before you install. You will then have a dual booting system.
