Hi, I have a o2 wireless box which gets (or supposed too) 8mb broadband.

I have bought a new laptop and the signal doesnt get no more that 3 out of 5 bars of signal and I am sat bang next to the wireless box. It as always been this way I thought it was somthing to do with my old laptop but now thinking otherwise.

Is there any techniques setting I have to look for to increase the connectivity with the wireless box?????

Appreciate any comments.

get closer!

Do you see any degradation in service? 3 bars should be fine tbh.

The speed it connects wirelessly is different to the 8meg broadband speed (which as a side note you'll never acheive unless you live next to the exchange for instance in beachief). If you're sat bang next to the router and you want the best from it plug in a network cable. Other than that I don't know what to suggest if your equipments all working properly and you want full signal strength, you can purchase booster ariels (something I think I need to invest in myself).

Change the Wifi Channel, there could be interference on the channel you are using.

Good Idea, to do this you will need to find out the routers default gateway and enter it into your browser and change the setting.
I'd say 300kbs download speed was decent. I pay a hell of a lots for my broadband package; around £25 pm and I get a lot less than that. When I'm out of this contract I think I'll be changing.

Aye that is a good deal. I need a contract too. pay as you go is costing me £60 odd quid a month! it's absolutely ridiculous. I seem to get raped on telecom charges.

Your wireless speed and your broadband speed are not connected. You would have to be having serious problems with your wireless for it to affect your download speed, but that bottle neck would be between the router and your PC not your real broadband speed.

You would have thought, but not the case in my experience. I have set up a number of wireless routers while sat right next to them with my laptop. There is the possibility of a dead zone right next to the router though.

Remember, the areal needs to point to where you are for best performance. Direct the areal towards you and try to be al least 2-3 metres away.

Change the Wifi Channel, there could be interference on the channel you are using.

This can help a great deal if you think others in your area are using the same channel. Its not always easy to find this out as lots more people are not broadcasting their SSID.

Experiment with the channels especially if you are using the factory default. Also change your SSID too if this is also at factory default.
