Afternoon all :)

My dad's laptop has a duff harddrive and I'm looking online to buy a replacement for it. It doesn't need to be a top notch one as all he will ever use it for is things like browsing one or two websites and perhaps using Word etc, so I'm looking at second hand ones on ebay.

What I'm wondering is do I have to get a replacement with exactly the same model number as the one I've taken out, or will newer versions be compatible with his laptop. It's a few years old now so ones with the same model number are in short supply.

The one that I've taken out of it is a Hitachi Travelstar 40GB HDD, model number IC25N040ATCS04-0.

The laptop is an Acer Travelmate 530 series BY27.

Thanks for any advice :)

Any 2.5" HDD will fit. Just make sure you get a SATA or IDE as required.

Oooh ok then. So if I get one with a higher rpm it will be ok?

Yes it should.

Bear in mind that although higher rpm disk can provide faster disker performance, they can also generate more heat and use more power (both important considerations for a laptop).

As serapis says, make sure the new disk has the same connector as the old one.

Okey doke, thanks both. I'll see if I win the one that's the same model, if not I'll look for similar but not too much faster :)
