Can anyone out there help?
I need some names of some Victorian landowners/ industrial big wigs for a project.
I've done a net search and failed - any tips?

Try and get a copy of:
"Endcliffe Crescent", Eva Wilkinson, ISBN 1-871679-01-X
this book deals with the people who have lived in and around Endcliffe Crescent since the 1870s - many were important in Sheffield's industry and professions and others made a national impact
(allegedly available from Blackwell's in Broomhill Shopping centre (£4.00))
This gives various 'house histories' of houses and land around Endcliffe Crescent.
Cheers, Carrie
The Wilson family of Sharrow were probably the biggest land owners, with the possible exception of the Duke of Norfolk.

the dukes of Norfolk owned a lot of land between the moor area and the river sheaf. (and up the hill in the erm... NORFOLK park area! ;) and the dukes of devonshire (the cavendishes) owned a lot of land from the moor area through devonshire green/ street, up toward the Hallamshire hospital and jessops.
in fact you can see, on a map, the differing alignments of the two areas in the city centre, going up barkers pool in one direction, and along eyre st/ arundel gate in the other.

Do they have to be of Sheffield origin?
If not, I have a project that I add to every blue moon or so that might be a good starting point.
