View Full Version : A Fixed Monthly Meet

Would you be interested in a fixed monthly meet?

We could change venues to begin with - until we find a suitable place to meet regularly.

I think monthly is too committive (spelling). I think every other month or once a quarter would be ample.

How about alternating ...

One month have a pub based meet (like before) ...

Then the next month have a fun / activity based meet (i.e. meal, bonfire, bowling, comedy night).

Keep alternating ...

My concern about regular meets is that people like myself can't always attend them and will be missing out - this is reflected in the follow up posts after a meet.

The other concern is will cliques start to form with the people who reguarly meet and those who don't?

Foxxx
07-10-2003, 16:37
I don't see it being a problem having a regular meet. Ok, yes maybe there will be cliques forming but that only means they are becoming friends which isn't a bad thing is it? And judging by those who attended this meet who had also attended the first one, they said hello to those who they knew from before but also made an equal effort to speak to the new attendies.

At the end of the day, the people who hit it off could arrange nights out together and not include new people by not advertising it as a meet, therefore it must be better to carry on advertising it so people have the choice to come along when they want/can. :D

The more frequent the more likely people will eventually pop along maybe.

Surely, being as at the last Meet people left early, came later, etc. then once a month is not that much of a commitment for many.

It is, after all, voluntary to attend - and it gives a 'regular' feel to it.

a monthly one would be better for me as at the moment i aint been able to come but a montly one would be easier as its more regular and not such a one off!

A regular monthly meet sounds like a great idea. The big problem is agreeing a regular night when this would happen - those who can't make the "chosen" night because of work or family commitments will feel left out!!

How about a Thursday - like last time. It doesn't cut into peoples weekend, and it tends to be less rowdy than a Friday or Saturday. As I mentioned earlier, those who have to go home afterwards, for family or next-day work reasons, can do so and still meet-up with Forum members.

Guess, with being retired and single, I'm fortunate in that respect - though any day is OK with me.

Just a suggestion.

And before they knew what was happening.. an empire had been born.. and everywhere there appeared SF citizens huddled in corners of every bar in Sheffield, every night of the week.

Come on chaps, you could probably have a 'Forum' meet by starting a 'It's lunchtime now... erm. I think I fancy a pint after work, anyone who wants to join me, I shall be in CRB at 6pm'.

There's enough of you out there (me too!) for people to be meeting left right and centre, and maybe in the middle too. As an open forum, we can use this wonderful communication tool to do whatever we want (within the 'rules'). Why, I even saw DaBouncer at the Tram stop in town today, from the heights of my double decker. I wouldn't have known him from Adam (Adam, who's Adam?) had I not been to the meets. I just look at it as making your world a little bit bigger than it would be.
(Or maybe you all just think 'Oh 'ark at 'er, been on the Vodka n RedBull again!', well not tonight (yet) my friends.... but maybe in a minute or two.

See some of you soon.

Just remember you can't please all of the people all of the time, and if we're not careful it'll all be getting just a little too formal, and we'll be having to get insurance and have a secretary and an Agenda so come on chaps - just chill out and do whatever.

Maybe there should be TWo a month on different nights and then everyone can get some time. However - it's basically down to whoever decides to start a thread and arrange something.

I don't know... what you asking me for? I haven't got all the answers!!!

Hiyabeing

You are obviously a woman of many brain unlike Winnie the Pooh

Since the two meetings I have attended, I have made private contact with one or two members that I did feel that I might develop a friendship with and for that I give thanks to Geoff and Sheffield Forum.

We have made private arrangements to meet up and develop that private friendship further.

I am not especially happy with the way that this conversation is progressing and speaking as the (Assistant) (and self-appointed) Social Secretary I would say that if you meet someone you like then you are allowed to meet them for real, anywhere you like and however you like.

When I first proposed that we have "a bit of a do" I didnt mean it to be prescriptive, I just hoped that some people might like to come along and meet some other people.

All this talk of polls and suitability is getting a very long way away from where I hoped we would be.

For instance, if I fancy a girly night out with two or three of our members, then I would hope that would be possible. If I would like to lunch with the same or different folk then I would hope that would also be possible.

There are no official gatherings in reality, even though we have had two, because they were not organised by managers of this site, they were organised by enthusiastic and individual members, and other similar members enjoyed coming too.

For what it is worth I think we should give up the concept of formality and allow people with a fancy to set up an evening or an afternoon of interest to do so, and advertise it and those who want to, will come.

Other members who fancy something different (like a trip to that great place in Castleton that has been all over the national news today) should also feel entirely free and at liberty to suggest a time and a place for an event.

I would personally like to draw attention to the regular and welcome contributions from our members who live away from Sheffield like Funke in Florida and Alchresearch in (wherever he is)....I wouldnt want them to think that they couldnt come to Sheffield one day for a very very special trip and just put up a post saying "I will be in the x bar, hope to see you around 7pm" without getting a load of slaver from all and sundry.

We are neither school children nor civil servants (except that some of us are LOL, but you know what I mean) we are all here as people that get some degree of pleasure out of being in the Forum.

Let those who are minded, organise events, those who are minded, attend, and those who dont fancy this one this time, not feel under pressure or criticism if they dont come along.

Let those who dont like smoking organise something in an non-smoking environment and those who do smoke, make their own decisions about turning up.

Likewise with alcohol.

We are all sufficiently grown up to manage our diaries

I think we should be equally grown up to individually suggest a variety of common activities that we might like and encourage others to join in.

ENDS

AS I posted on the parallel thread:

Being as the MAIN idea, I thought, of a Forum meet is to 'meet', socialize and exchange ideas, I vote for #1.

I'm all for 'splinter-groups' meeting, etc - but please, being as many members have their own social lives, and families - can we not concentrate on the main reason for a meet. After a meet. people can do their own thing and go for a meal or to a club, etc, or simply just go home to their family.

The Washington is spacious and not full of tobacco smoke - as you should know Jamie.

I suppose I could make the effort if it was on a Thursday. After all, Manchester is barely more than an hour away, especially if the meet is towards the West end of the city.

I'd just rather have the opportunity to grab a few beers because I am immensely shy and wouldnt say a peep if I was sober and driving back!

BUT, I noticed the last meet carried on until the wee small hours and I usually like to hang on till the bitter end!

Speaking entirely for myself, I would really be pleased if you were able to make it over into the enemy county for a beer or two. Maybe you can persuade one of the guys to put you up for the night if you took a day off the following day, I just bet you are owed a few.

You are such a regular and important part of our Forum, it would be a shame if we couldnt make that extra effort to let you in to the White Rose County *wink, LOL, wink*

I read the postings on here often enough to feel I sort of recognise some of you - albeit I sort of think of you as the little avatars you use

I love the idea of a regular meet particularly as I'm new to Sheffield ( I've been here less than a year.) :)

Welcome!! I'm also fairly new, and had a d**n office meeting so couldn't make the last meet... I'm in favour of a monthly event, as I don't think the same people will turn up every time, so it shouldn't get to clique-y. Incidentally, are there any other smokers out there? I’ve been in contact with Funke88 and she, and her husband, can make it about 7pm, Thursday 6th November. I suggested ‘The Washington’, but that, of course, is up to Forum members – the date, however, is now fixed (but not for a regular monthly meet – if people are still interested).. I just thought that it would be good to meet her, being as she is a very regular contributer. Anyway, it’s now open again for the venue …:)

I'm fairly new to the forum too and have already been impressed with the overall friendliness here - thanks for that :)

I'm up for coming to the next meet and think The Washington is a great choice of venue. Its friendly and relaxed and is easy enough to get to plus you get to see some of the muso's from local bands past and present there :)

Anyway great forum, keep it up :)

Problem is, where is the Washington?
Anyway, I'd like to say thanks to Carlwark for organizing a meet and especially for working it around when I'm in town. Doesn't seem like anyone else has had any other good ideas or taken the initiative to organize anything this time around. I would get involved myself but I don't know my way around Sheffield anymore. I got the impression when talking in the chat room on Sunday that some of you weren't interested. Well, no ones asking you to come but it would be nice.

Thank you for the kudos Funke – but, actually, it was alch’s idea originally – I just took the initiative to contact you. As for the venue – that was really Jamie, who suggested we meet at the Washington, before the last Meet. Unfortunately, he was in the right place (The Washington) at the right time, whilst, I was in the wrong place (the Devonshire Cat, half a block away) at the right time – hence, I described it as ‘spacious’, whereas, as endorsed by Phan and Xtro, it’s actually ‘cosy’ – I finally found it this Monday, along with Jamie and Phan. Anyway, I look forward to meeting you and your hubby, on the sixth.:)
