View Full Version : Pre-packed Sandwiches?
JonJParr 07-04-2005, 09:21 Worst modern invention or revolutionary convenience?
I despise those 'nappies' they put in the bottom of most pre-packed sandwiches! It's the fact that we would never eat sandwiches we made 3 days ago but are happy to pay £2+ when out at work. Give me a Pret a Manger (freshly made that day on site) sandwich anyday.
Unfortunatly I eat from services or petrol stations quite alot, and the sandwiches are just getting worse! You spend 20 minutes choosing the most appealing sounding option, then you pay two or three pounds for something that just tastes like cold! Awful.

they should never be 3 days old. Personally i'd eat a sandwich that had been left on the side and not in cold storage, the sandwich industry however would throw them away as they are quite conscious of the quality of their sandwiches.
no one forces you to eat them, if you don't like them then don't buy them.. For everyone else they are a convenience as not many people take a kitchen with them down the motorway.
it's not like were short of sandwich shops in sheffield, especially the town centre... personally I always go for a nice sandwich from either Sarnies near the cathedral... or Porky's in Wickes car park... both do nice sarnies :D
Swan_Vesta 07-04-2005, 09:53 I'd rather make my own than shell out God knows how much for a pre-packed sarnie. I do my own salad/pasta boxes and take in my own sarnies and I reckon I save a bundle.
There used to be a shop in Meadowhall that sold realy good bread (like roast onion and black olive bread) and sarnies, I can't rember it's name but I do miss it.
My main gripe with pre-packed sarnies is the crappy bread they use, it's like ASDA smart price 9p a loaf bread.
If I want a big sarnie I go to Cooplands and have a ploughmans though Sarnies is good too.
zombiekillah 07-04-2005, 15:18 yeuch , at my college they refuse to make you a proper sandwich no matter how much you beg so unless i want to walk for ages i have to eat pre packed ones .... and the ones they sell there are foul !! and stupidly priced. just like spar really .... bought a cheese n onion sarni from there once , took one bite n threw it away cause it was that rank. give me proper sarnie from a proper sarnie shop any day! favorite has to be the really tiny one behind mcdonalds on top of the moor (cant remember name) but mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Shell make the best sarnies!
BUT WHY DO THEY INSIST ON PUTTING MAYO ON EVERY SANDWICH????
I HATE MAYO - can they not put a sachet of it in the carton - for those who do like it ?
Providing you get them they same day they are delivered shell do some nice ones, the salmon and egg is lovely!!!!
redrobbo 07-04-2005, 15:46 Even at the end of the day, when pre-packed sandwiches in supermarkets/garages are reduced in price, I won't buy them. Rip-off prices and boring taste.
MuteWitness 07-04-2005, 15:54 but then you could go to subway - out of date veg, which only gets thrown away if it looks too brown. Bread thats has to be defrosted and contains more E numbers than a piece of rock!

There doesn't appear to be a branch of Pret a Manger in Shefffield, - 2 each in Leeds and Manchester and 1 in Nottingham.
Badjogger 07-04-2005, 19:17 What I find amusing is the 'slimmers' pre-packed sanwiches. If you ever have a prawn one, take a good look inside it. The only difference is THERE ARE LESS PRAWNS IN IT! I reckon it's the same with all of them. They are the same price, just with less in! Just buy normal ones and only eat one. It's about the same effect and cheaper!
Also, I hate the manky bits of lettuce or other loose stuff that has fallen out of the sandwich and got embedded in the bread by the pressing of the plastic container. Yum yum.

We used to - in Meadowhall - but it closed down.
I read in the newspaper at the time that Sheffield is the only city in the world where Pret wasn't sucessfull. Another claim to fame
alchresearch 07-04-2005, 21:54 What about Subways? They seem to be springing up everywhere (well, two in Sheffield with a third on the way) and the sandwiches are quite nice.
MuteWitness 07-04-2005, 22:40 yes but its still not fresh

I have a similar gripe with onion... Yuk.
I would not even eat an onion like an apple for 1 million pounds... :gag:

There is something "wrong" with the bread there, it's like that foam bread that Mc Donalds use, and the salad always looks a bit limp.
Don_Kiddick 08-04-2005, 08:54 Mayo I can handle.
But who invented Salad Cream? :gag: blaargh!

i explained this earlier in there thread, the salad is nearly always out of date and starting to go dis coloured. The bread comes frozen and has more E numbers than you would think!
Take salad in plastic containers. Slices of fresh bread and butter or rolls. That way you what's in it and know it's fresh:banana:
