Its me again! Chairperson of SHARP, Sheffield Alcohol Recovery Project. We are a self help group of people of all ages and both sexes that struggle with alcohol. We are funded both from national and local funding sources. We work and hold down jobs, but we meet weekly to hone our coping and refusal skills and generally help each other to remain abstinate.
We also have guest speakers and go on trips out. Some of the members need to regain their esteem and interpersonnal skills, and some have other problems apart from struggling with alcohol.
Can anybody suggest places, companies etc. I can approach for a short trip. We have been to the Police control room, the fire station, The helipad, round the Crucible, Radio Sheffield etc. but are always on the lookout for somewhere similar. I must stress that members must stay abstinate or they are refered to outside agencies so there will be no chance of anybody on a visit that has been drinking.
I expect the corny replies we have all heard before, but if anybody has a serious suggestion I would be pleased to consider it.
Incidently, SHARP produce a leaflet to help those struggling. If you require a copy pm me please, and we also have a hotline phone number, if you need this pm me also.
Hiya Bruce
What about going down to Kelham Island industrial museum? I go down there a couple of times per year and always find it interesting. Good luck with your project

Just coz there's a beer with that name :loopy:
I thought that Kelham island museum was a steel museum?
Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet may be safer though
I'm guessing you're aim is to prove that there are other things in life?
You could get in touch with Castle college and ask for a department tour, to see what vocational coures there are. I like the signwriting dept, and the painting and decorating mini rooms :D
You could arrange to have a meal in the catering college resaurant up there. (quite cheap)
And they're usually looking for models for the beauty courses

Grr. You typed that whilst I was editing my post to sound less terse
Edit: just checked here (http://www.simt.co.uk/kelham/index.html) as I've never been to Kelham Island. It doesn't have any beer making stuff from what I can see
Oh deary me:confused: These people are quite capable of walking past a brewery to enter the industrial museum that is located behind.
Bruce asked for ideas on where to go, and obviously he doesn't want some place that's in the Outer Hebrides, it is after all a"day" trip. I suggest that if you haven't been then go and try it.

Thank you for your replies, all of them. It is obvious that many of you have no idea what 'struggling with alcohol' actually means. It means being able to live a normal life and do normal things and having the strength not to lift an alcoholic drink. We will not isolate ourselves and marginalise ourselves. We go into pubs, and we go to clubs, and our partners drink and.....I could go on.
So Kelham Island is not ruled out
Any more ideas?
