It's close.

I voted for the one in the lead so far. :)

It's strange this month. Obviously the pint and the packet of crisps appealled to the early voters - probably mostly photo SIG inhabitants and went straight into the lead, while the low angled viewpoint has clearly appealled to more recent voters and has crept up quickly. It's gonna be close.

I know which one I like best! :D

Got to be the beer and crisps scene. Especially now when the sun is shining!

I think this competition is a corking idea. I was talking to a couple of persistent lurkers a few nights ago about it and even they contemplated coming out of hiding to have a go at Junes comp

A close one this, I found it difficult to decide between a few photos. Are we supposed to discuss them in this thread?

Hmmm...possibly not as it could lead to hints being given as to who took the pics

You can discuss them all you like and maybe you'll draw in some of the photographers responsible too - but it IS supposed to be anonymous (otherwise we'd all know who NOT to vote for!!). In fact it would be interesting to hear people's comments on the pics. We often criticize each other's work (sometimes it's even constructive) but that's from another photographer's point of view. It would be good to hear what non-photographers think of them too.

I suppose it is best to wait until the poll closes before unleashing critique on the images. It's a bit unfair otherwise :D

Yep, It's looking a close race this month! Nothing like a bit of a contest to get the competitive juices flowing! :)

The poll closes on 15th June so I hope you won't forget to post your comments. I'd be interested to see them.

'A couple'? It's one each!

PM Hook to tell him which one you want removed. If there are more than 25 entries at the end of the month anyone with multiple entries will have them all removed.

Its quite interesting how people seeing how people vote on this. My personal view on the one which is currently winning that just a few compositional changes could really have improved the picture. (AsshetonArms) Perhaps with a little rearrangement the picture could have drwan you into the door a little more. The photographer already had the edges of the table working towards this goal. Pehaps the shot reframed a little high so that the sign came more into play. Even just reversing / flipping the beer, orange and crisp locations would have drawn the viewer into the picture more than away from it. At present the eye is drawn from the beer towards the crisps and out of the frame. A good effort though.

For me "for comp" was the clear winner. apart from the fact that it reminds me of when I used to work in the peaks the picture is very well balance. Perhaps cropped a little to tighly on the left and not enough on the right but not much of a change. The picture well and truely makes me long for a good pint (you don't get them round these parts). It would have worked in B&W or sepia well too.

Well done to all and keep it up.

Interesting comment and I have to agree with you about flipping the beer and J2O. The beer obscures the door. In all the fiddling around to set the shot up (the packet of crisps blew away twice!) that's one thing that passed me by completely!

Okay the poll is closed now. Congrats to Impinabox, good pic.

Yes, I had a bit of trouble deciding over this one. I liked "for comp", it had good colours and the pub is well positioned, but I felt it was a bit too tight, and the telegraph lines were unfortunately distracting (though I'm not sure what the rules are here for removing such things.)

My other favourite was The Barrel, which definitely said "PUB" to me. Loved the sky, but what hurt this one for me was the car over to the left (hard to avoid without revisiting or serious editing obviously) and, more importantly, I found the edited border to be too distracting.

In the end I plumped for the Assheton Arms pic because it was the only one to include the human elements of the public house, the very stuff we involve ourselves with when we visit the pubs. I also - somewhat oddly - would say that it was the photo with the most potential to it for slight tweaks in a re-shoot. Playing with the DOF and focal points could be interesting.

Thanks for that - I have to agree on the cropping. That was something I did on photoshop but looking back now I think I did take too much out. I was sat in a nettle bush to take the photo so it was a bit awkward.

I wanted to try and get less of an angle on the picture, but If I'd set the shot up so I was looking face on to the pub I'd have been in the middle of a blind bend, and didn't think that was sensible!

As for the telegraph wires mrmist.. I did consider photoshopping them out, but thought that wasn't really in the spirit of it.

It was the 'human element (or alcoholic element perhaps) that was the inspiration for the pic. I looked at the early entries and thought - well - yes - they're pictures of pubs, 'record shots' you could call them - but I wanted something that captured the spirit of 'pub' and made me want to go there. And if anyone is interested it was shot on a Canon 5D with a 17mm lens at about f16 to get the depth of field.

Personally I thought Hook's pic of the Watts Russell was beautifully composed (OK - apart from the doorway leading your eye right out of the pic - just like mine!) and well lit (esp the flecks of green on the roof), but had no soul. A few people outside drinking at the table would have made all the difference. And I don't think 'shopping the wires out would have been against the spirit, Hook. There is a bit of feeling against image manipulation on this forum which I think is over enthusiastic.

I also liked 'The Ship' for some reason. I say that since normally I run a mile from weird angles - they tend to be a bit of a cliche these days in wedding photographs - but it seemed to me to be the only other pic with a bit of imagination.

But thanks to everyone who voted for my pic. I'm looking at the June comp now and thinking there's a bit more of a competition there. Hmmm....

I have a question for the photographer of "Blind Jack's". Those kids in the window at top right... were they 'shopped in after the fact or were they a picture hung in the window? Just that the density and contrast in that window is different to the rest of the pic.

Hi,I am the photogahpher of Blind Jacks. It is in fact a well known pub in the centre of Knaresborough.
The children you mention were not there when the photo was taken, maybe I captured spooky goings on???!!!

No, not really! The children playing around tthe window you mention is in fact a mural painted on the front of the pub.

Hello folks! I took the photo of The Ship. The reason I took it was because I was being picked up from outside the Ship one morning to go on a walk in the Peaks and whilst waiting for my lift I thought what a great building it was. I tried to get the pub sign, the stonework and the picture in the one frame. It was only after talking to neoteric and Hemlock that I knew that the subject for May was pubs, so I just thought I'd bung it in.

Excellent idea whoever came up with this competition!

A worthy second. :)

The month after the june comp should be massive. Much easier to see all the pics etc etc with the new embedded pics.

Don't forget the June comp though, on my signature.
