Should David Blunkett have an office in Sheffield paid for by the ratepayers.Bearing in mind he is living in a £3000000 pad in London which should be occupied by the Home Secretary, and a nice little pad in Chatsworth paid for by God knows who.

All MP's are provided with an allowance to run an office in their constituency - to represent his constituents as is right.

From memory, DB's Sheffield office is provided by the Council, and I think he pays a small rent.

Mod: Well it isn't on topic. This thread is about Blunkett's Sheffield office and the cost of it. The BNP don't come into it - in all respects.

Regardless of who provides his office and the rent he pays, Mr Blunkett has been claiming the the full allowance available for office accommodation and certain other expenses (£18,799 in 2003-04)
Caborn: £18,799
Betts: £18,799
Jackson: £14,900
Munn: £17,651

Would the council make offices available at a small rent to MPs from other parties, or is it just Labout that get this treatment?

no,the Council do not give space to any other party, the labour lads pay a peppercorn rent,YOU help pay the rest

The office space he uses is that which would be available to any MP, no matter which party they were from, that is my understanding of it.

Methinks Blunkett should be encouraged to stay away from Sheffield- period. I remember the days of the loony left in Sheffield- Mssrs Blunkett, Betts et al. They nearly brought Sheffield to its knees. He should be provided with an office as far away from Sheffield as possible, it would be a good investment at almost any price.

Mr Blunkett is waiting in the wings for his calling from the pm to step into the shoes of the Home Secretaryship if they win the election. If not he will sleep rough.

I don't think that peppercorn/low rent office space was offered by the Labour Councillors to the Liberal Democrat MP . If it was he refused to take advantage of the council tax payers of the City by accepting it. AFAIK he paid for his own office and staff just off Clarkehouse Road and later on at Nether Green. I shall check this after the weekend and if I'm wrong, I'll post to that effect.

It would be interesting to know what the rent the Labour MPs were charged over the years was, in relation to the amounts they were claiming .... perhaps someone from their offices monitors the Forum and could clarify this for us?

As Tony Blair would say ' its time to move on'

as for Blunkett - within weeks he could be out of a job in Sheffield - but what price Tony finds him some other role to follow - next Lord Mayor of London perhaps?

I have looked on the Register of Members Interests and only Clive Betts and Helen Jackson make mention of the fact that they receive accommodation subsidised bt the Sheffield City Council. Helen Jackson also gets parking and cleaning from the Council.

It makes for interesting reading and can be found here (http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm/cmregmem/050128/memi02.htm)

It is worth noting that not only do Sheffield Council supply the offices they also heat and light them. So, you may not be able to afford your heat and light but you'r paying for Blunketts

Well everyone knows they all have their noses in the trough dont they?
Not a bad little earner for Blunkett giving seminars at up to £10,000 a go,no woner they all want to enter politics.;)
Still wouldnt it be nice if he was to lose all these little perks after the election;)
Our clive betts has had a nice few holidays hasnt he,still lets hope those end also.:heyhey:

MUNN, Meg (Sheffield Heeley)
4. Sponsorship or financial or material support
Office accommodation and car parking provided by Sheffield City Council at an annual charge of £2000 toward rent and rates.

so Meg Munn (who represents Sheffield Heeley Constituency in which I live so I'm interested particularly in her) pays £2000 per annum towards the cost of her office in Central Sheffield? Does anyone know how that compares to the normal office space rental in the area? How much are we losing in rental income for these offices? Also I wonder how much she actually claims for the use of that office space?

David Blunkett and Richard Caborn appear to have no support at all from the Council ? Doesn't seem very likely when the other three say they do?

It would be interesting to know these things ..

I understand that this is a long-standing arrangement, which the Lib-Dems continued when they ran Sheffield City Council?

I just think it would suit Pew perfectly plus give Blair a chance to get rid of Livingstone once and for all.

Besides which you'd not see much of him - much like members of his current constituancy unless there's something for nowt on offer...

I got on the wrong foot with both of them when Iwas in the housing inspectors office, Betts, when he first showed his face, to tell me to place an order to replace some bushes on the Longley Hall farm estate that had been vandalised, when i explained that it was not policy to do that until their [sport!] had died down, he went to my boss and got his way, brownie points to the boss of course. As for blunkett I patted his dog and he snapped my head off, I said to my mates those two are going to work wonders for this city I dont think.

Not quite sure why we are even having this 'debate'.

All MP's have constituancy offices don't they? You cite the cost of Mr Blunketts office during the time he was also Home Secretary. Surely that would have made a difference?

Ruby D

Do u have issues with Meg Munn ?

The reason i ask is that i have rceived a threatening letter from Heir Blunkett indicating he will use the full weight of the law against a Parson Cross unemployed lad in much the same way as he clouted Trinity Group newspapers.

Any advice welcomed
