View Full Version : Is my dog in/approaching labour KAM2 31-05-2008, 11:20 My dog is acting strangely, she is hiding quite a lot, also panting now & then, she keeps scratching a blanket, also her breathing is quite rapid & she has been whining quite a bit today. MuddyBuddy 31-05-2008, 12:06 Is this a wind up? You've bred your dog and you don't even know the signs of labour? KAM2 31-05-2008, 12:16 Is this a wind up? You've bred your dog and you don't even know the signs of labour? No it's not a wind up! this is the first time for me & it's a learning curve, i think she is possibly a few days away from going into labour, but when you haven't experienced a pregnant dog before it's not so easy to tell. I have done my research and read up on the signs of labour etc, some things match up, others don't. pinkgirl 31-05-2008, 14:16 No it's not a wind up! this is the first time for me & it's a learning curve, i think she is possibly a few days away from going into labour, but when you haven't experienced a pregnant dog before it's not so easy to tell. I have done my research and read up on the signs of labour etc, some things match up, others don't. I was the same with Leah, as we hadn't had experience either. Yes Leah showed all the signs you mention above, and she was restless and pacing the night before she had the pups, sort of crawled along the floor too Hope all goes well :) DiamondGirl 31-05-2008, 19:11 Good luck with the pups I hope all goes well. What breed are they? :) Rainrescue 31-05-2008, 23:38 If you have allowed your bitch to get pregnant - ignorance is not an excuse. She should have been seen by a vet previously who would have advised you what signs to look out for. Keep an eye on her, let her settle andhopefully she will give birth naturally to them, but I witnessed some puppies being born and when the bitch had problems, I was so grateful I had someone with me who knew what they were doing. Bitches do die in labour - and often so do many of the pups. Please get yourself aware of what to do to help your girl now you have allowed her to get in this situation. I hope you have homes ready and waiting for the puppies. KAM2 01-06-2008, 01:47 If you have allowed your bitch to get pregnant - ignorance is not an excuse. I hope you have homes ready and waiting for the puppies. It's nothing to do with ignorance at all!! I have been researching a lot about this for quite a while now, so i have not just let her get pregnant & not thought about anything & just left it if you're thinking that. However just because i have researched a lot of things regarding pregnancy it doesn't make me an expert, especially when i have never experienced this before, as i said above it's a learning curve & i will make sure that my dog is comfortable & that i am there to help during labour if needed! Why are you asking about homes for the puppies? they will only be going to very good loving homes as i wouldn't want anything less! katkin 01-06-2008, 03:45 What breed is she? DiamondGirl 01-06-2008, 15:50 The question 'what breed?' seems to have been ignored. So im going to keep a silent guess as to what breed they are ;) KAM2 01-06-2008, 17:47 The question 'what breed?' seems to have been ignored. KAM2 01-06-2008, 17:53 My dog gave birth in the early hours of this morning, she only had one puppy, i helped her out with it & everything was fine, the dog & the puppy are fine & well. :) SpeedDemon 01-06-2008, 17:58 Thats good then. Congrats :D pinkgirl 01-06-2008, 18:56 My dog gave birth in the early hours of this morning, she only had one puppy, i helped her out with it & everything was fine, the dog & the puppy are fine & well. :) Many congratulations- don't forget the pics:) ladyacademic 01-06-2008, 19:02 It's unusual for a bitch to only have one puppy. You'd be wise to get her checked out by a vet. pinklady 01-06-2008, 19:03 My dog gave birth in the early hours of this morning, she only had one puppy, i helped her out with it & everything was fine, the dog & the puppy are fine & well. :) awwww, thats good to hear, are you keeping the pup or finding it a home? .... I'd love to see a piccy of mum and baby if you've got a camera handy  I bet its adorable DiamondGirl 01-06-2008, 20:08 Make sure there arent more puppies. Sometimes they can come hours apart :) KAM2 01-06-2008, 20:54 Make sure there arent more puppies. Sometimes they can come hours apart :) I wouldn't have thought there will be anymore as she had her puppy at 6am. DiamondGirl 01-06-2008, 21:01 I wouldn't have thought there will be anymore as she had her puppy at 6am. Its unusual but i suppose it does happen. If she seems content and is drinking and eating then she should be ok. Any piccies? KAM2 01-06-2008, 21:13 Its unusual but i suppose it does happen. She is content & is eating and drinking so i think she won't be having anymore, I have taken some pics but not uploaded them onto my computer yet. DiamondGirl 01-06-2008, 21:14 She is content & is eating and drinking so i think she won't be having anymore, I have taken some pics but not uploaded them onto my computer yet. What kind of pup is he/she? pinkgirl 02-06-2008, 03:40 Make sure there arent more puppies. Sometimes they can come hours apart :) We thought that too... but pup one (Tyler) was born at 6.30am 5th May and pup two (Ozzie) was born on May 6th at 7.30am 25 hrs apart :) KAM2 02-06-2008, 19:55 My dog is acting strange & i just wondered whether someone could possibly tell me why. It's been almost 39 hours since she had her puppy, however she is very restless & keeps scratching & turning in circles and won't settle down. DiamondGirl 02-06-2008, 19:57 My dog is acting strange & i just wondered whether someone could possibly tell me why. It's been almost 39 hours since she had her puppy, however she is very restless & keeps scratching & turning in circles and won't settle down. It is possible there is another pup on its way. However, as much as an horrible thought it is it could me that one or more of the pups died inside her and she could need vet treatment. I really would get her checked. :( Moonbird 02-06-2008, 20:54 If your really worried about the dog you would be better off asking for a vets help than asking on here, we cannot see the dog and only know what you tell us, a vet is where you should be at! Rainrescue 02-06-2008, 21:04 As I put in my original post - having puppies can cost the bitch and the puppies their lives. You usually only hear of success stories. If you care for your bitch - you must get her to a vet now - tonight. The poor thing is relying on you - her owner - who got her into this situation - to help her out here. Have you got a vet you can call on? do they know she has had one puppy - if not, get her down to the PDSA Centre to see Vets Now. I hope the poor thing is ok. fyy123 02-06-2008, 21:19 Does she have a green/black discharge coming from her? Did all the afterbirth come out in one, If she is still scratching and turning around there probably is a dead pup in there, which maybe blocking the way for any others. This can cause an infection and can lead to the death of your dog. If there is one inside her it needs to be removed asap. Like all the others have said get her to the vets now. It will put your mind at rest if nothing else. DiamondGirl 02-06-2008, 21:23 I hope you have her at a vets, because like we have said she could die. Its just like a person giving birth, you would take a person to the hospital. Hummybabe 02-06-2008, 21:32 Does she have a green/black discharge coming from her? Sorry but i just don't see the problem regarding the font, also i am not throwing any silly remarks at people at all, i just think it is wrong to more or less question whether i or the situation is genuine, why would i waste my time posting on here about this if it was not genuine? Hi Labyrinth, no there is no green/black discharge, i have not seen any discharge at all, i am keeping a very close eye on her, she has settled down now and seems fine at the moment, she is eating ok and is drinking a fair amount which is good, i will be taking her to the vets as her wellbeing is very important to me being a big dog lover. KAM2 02-06-2008, 23:35 I hope you have her at a vets, because like we have said she could die. Its just like a person giving birth, you would take a person to the hospital. She will be checked out, i wouldn't want her to get ill in anyway & her health is a priority, i am not taking my eyes off her. fyy123 03-06-2008, 00:21 Eating and drinking is a good sign at least she's not in distress by the sounds of it. Glad you are going to get her checked out anyway, always best to be safe than sorry. What breed is she? I know some breeds like tibetan spaniels and such like do only have small litters, How is the puppy? Make sure you keep it warm especially at night by placing a hot water bottle safely under it's blanket for the first few days after birth to lesson the risk of fading puppy syndrome. I've really no idea why she was scratching and turning around, Is she quite happy to feed the pup? If not it could be a sign that she has mastitis, check to see if she is expressing milk ok and that her teats are not hot or swollen. Keep us informed on how the mum and little one is doing. Good luck and fingers crossed that it's all good news at the vets. Well over 24hrs later you were asking for help again due to her behaviour especialy when some one told you they could be several hours apart from each pup, personally i would not be wasteing my time waiting for replies from users when it would be easier and less stressful for you pet if you had taken the most obvious advice and gone to see the professional to start with. I will be saying no more on this thread so they will be no point in replying to this post. Good luck and i hope as is well with mother and pup. mrs gough 04-06-2008, 10:36 Hi Kam, Hows mum and baby doing? Hope all is well with both of Them. |
