View Full Version : Is it possible to lose a chip?

I took Barney (7 months) for a blood test this morning for the rabies vaccination. All was well until they tried to read his chip. They scanned all over him but nothing came up. The batteries were checked in the chip reader and the reader was checked on another dog to prove it was working ok. It was fine.

We got in contact with the people who sold him to us (he was a rescue dog) and they assured us that he had been chipped. We have the chip number in his pet passport but we can't get a reading.

Have you ever heard of a chip being lost?

We may have to have him chipped again if we can't get a reading.

The chip may not necessarily be "lost". it may still be exactly where the Chipper put it, but it have ceased to function (it has been known).

In fact, the vet, this morning, when I took my Trixie in said that they recomended that the chip be scanned every year when she goes for her boosters, to make sure it is still working/ hasn't become dislodged.

I'm taking him to be scanned again tomorrow. If there is still no reading then I suppose we have no other choice than to chip him again. My only worry is that the first chip starts working again when he is controlled on the border. :help:

A chip can move and it can also be lost under some circumstances, I was told not to be rough around the chip area when Kira was chipped for a couple of days as they can come out.

They scanned him all over but there was no reading. Hopefully it was just a blip but we can't really take the chance when travelling to England where the controls are very tight.

My Newf lost her chip went missing 3 years after we had her done. No idea where it went, but the vet just said it had probably worked it's way out somehow probably in the water as she used to go water training every weekend. He chipped her again free of charge and we had it checked every year when she went back for her booster and health check. Luckly this time it stayed put.

My 2 young cats were chipped, then when they went to be castrated the vet thought (for some reason) I'd asked for them to be chipped, and did them again. Consequently both boys have 2 chips so when the scanner is run down them, it brings up the log number, then if the scanner is run back up, it brings up another log number. Both chips hold my details anyway, so apart from confusing the person doing the scanning, it's not a problem lol

ive heard of them ceasing to work, have seen it where dogs are chipped and scanned and it works and then a day or two later its gone and worked itself out if it wasnt in properly and a couple of my lot have chips in the shoulders where theyve worked around the body. anna.x.

I remember when they first came out there was a lot of controversy about them moving, apparently used in cattle originally. Its probably best to have them checked yearly under circumstances. The gsd breed council decided to bring in a tattooing scheme like they use in germany, and the dogs are tatooed in the ear at about 8 weeks, thats ok if you know where to look to find the tatoo register but most folk dont.

Chips can work themselves out. My oldest tom (who is a bit of a hard nut!) and my others were all chipped together, and when I was fussing him one day I noticed the chip on the floor next to him. So I had to take him in again!

We get ours checked each time we go just to be sure but apparently the longer they're in, the less chance of them moving (don't know about ceasing to work though).

I must admit I'm not keen on tattoos as they can be tampered with and I thought most people tattooed down the inside of the leg rather than the ear because of greyhounds being abandoned after having their ears hacked off :(

Well, I had him checked again this morning and still no reading. Had to have another chip put in plus a new passport. We will get our money back from the previous owner.

The vet also said that in all the years that she has chipped animals she has never heard of a chip suddenly stop working. She was more in the opinion that the previous owner's vet had made the cock up.

I know my spotties chip has moved and is in the top of her shoulder now and the cat has moved as well but they had them done over 8 years ago so dont think they were as good at it as they are now.
