View Full Version : Best Decade for music. Lickszz 07-10-2003, 00:20 The best music came from which decade? I am going to go with 80's I think. Funke88 07-10-2003, 00:29 Wow, the 80s has it. Good times had by all. Who can argue with Duran Duran! Agent Orange 07-10-2003, 08:34 I'm going to have to go with the 70's cos I'm not at all unbiased as I like Rock and Punk etc. Although, I grew up in the 80's and have fond memories of the not-so great music from Adam Ant etc  chill 07-10-2003, 08:38 Ignoring nostalgia, I'd have to say the sixties, as that is when the pop music revolution of the fifties started to really find it's feet and produce some great music. DaBouncer 07-10-2003, 09:19 It was either between 60's or the 80's. I opted for the 80's cos it's more my era, but it was a very close call. I love 60's music! Rich 07-10-2003, 09:22 I voted 80s. Apart from crap such as Rick Astley, the Spitting Image "Chicken Song" and BROS, 80s music OWNED in my opinion. TonyG 07-10-2003, 09:28 Has to be the 80's....glorious student years. I never worked out how I could manage to go out every night as a student with no income. I suppose following the cheap beer around helped...Isabellas on a Tuesday, Limit on a Wednesday, Leadmill on Thursday, Student Union on a Friday. Anybody remember the rock place near castle market that was up about 3 flights of stairs? Think that's what we did on Monday's. BigD 07-10-2003, 10:38 There's no question about it - the 60's by a country mile:D :D fnkysknky 07-10-2003, 10:40 Originally posted by TonyG Has to be the 80's....glorious student years. Never been myself but brother used to go a lot in his metal days. TonyG 07-10-2003, 10:45 Yep Rebels it was. Think I realise now why I got a 2:2, the drinkers degree. Agent Dan 07-10-2003, 10:53 It's very close, but the early 90s beats the 80s, just, for services to rock and hip-hop. Not pop music, of course, the 80s would always win on that front!! 8) Phanerothyme 07-10-2003, 10:56 Sixties to the Nineties inclusive, as Frank Zappa (hero, role model, iconoclast and über guitarist) was fervently active in all of these decades. For the sheer unbridled horizon aphasia in music making, the Sixties win hands down. And what about the 20s and 30s? Some of the most eye-popping fast swing jazz was coming out of the US then, and that stuff I love too. Any decade that included Black Lace is forever tainted. nomme 07-10-2003, 11:04 I went for sixties. No, I'm not that old (though I may look it!), I just think that without the sixties the rest wouldn't have happened. The music from that decade has had a massive influence on what followed. Bands like the Beatles, The Stones, Bob Dylan, The Doors, The Velvet Underground, The Monkees, the Beach Boys, Jimi Hendrix, Elvis, etc etc. Can't beat it. Nomme Classic Rock 07-10-2003, 11:29 The rock of the seventies and eighties without a doubt. I grew up (teens) in the 80s so was exposed to that more than anything so voted 80s. Sidla 07-10-2003, 11:59 It has to be the 90's just for the indie and britpop. alchresearch 07-10-2003, 11:59 Definetly 80's for me. I have spent a lot of my time getting every top 20 song from the 80's, it is a massive and definitive collection! When this poll closes shall we have one of the top song of that particular decade? TonyG 07-10-2003, 12:01 Agreed. Can I have an early nomination for Joy Division - Love will tear us apart. MARTINO 1 07-10-2003, 19:29 Has to be the seventies for me slade bowie t rex sweet loved them all. Jon 07-10-2003, 22:35 :) seventies i voted for..i missed the 80's and moved on to the 90's..but i'm still playing stuff on my cd from the seventies :headbang: RPG 07-10-2003, 22:56 80's! and to a lesser extent the 90's Abdul 08-10-2003, 06:36 Originally posted by Funke88 Wow, the 80s has it. Abdul 08-10-2003, 06:37 Originally posted by RPG 80's! and to a lesser extent the 90's I wouldn't have thought you were old enough to remember the 80's, you little whippersnapper Abdul 08-10-2003, 06:38 Originally posted by alchresearch Definetly 80's for me. When this poll closes shall we have one of the top song of that particular decade? with a link to MP3 files? :D :D :D alchresearch 08-10-2003, 11:58 www.club977.com is the only link you need! Top 80s stuff on there. pontious 08-10-2003, 12:28 Well, although I really began a love of music in the 80's I'm gonna buck the trend and go with the 50's where it all started! Buddy Holly, Little Richard, Elvis, Chuck Berry etc.....without these blokes music today would be VERY different. Lickszz 18-10-2003, 08:29 Looks like the 80's has ran away with this quite convincingly.   Thanks for voting everyone. Carlwarker 18-10-2003, 13:58 So nothing happened in music before the 50s.:) You don't know what you're missing: Blues, early Jazz, Gershwin, Cole Porter, Opera, Bach, Mozart, Wagner ... Nomis 18-10-2003, 14:56 My choice would be this decade with all the fab alternative guitar bands that are around at the moment. The 90's - indifferent. Loads of faceless dance acts to start off with, saved by Britpop in the end. The 80's - Hmmmmmmm............ New Romantics eh ? I must admit that I m quite partial to Spandau, Duran Duran, PSB, Five star to name a few so this would be my 2nd choice. Too young to remember the 70's and 60's !! Lickszz 18-10-2003, 21:59 Originally posted by Carlwarker So nothing happened in music before the 50s.:) You don't know what you're missing: Blues, early Jazz, Gershwin, Cole Porter, Opera, Bach, Mozart, Wagner ... I am not prepared to admit that nothing happened before the 50's in music so I have added 2 extra options. ;) purplepippa 19-10-2003, 01:13 Ooooooooh tough one. I didn't vote in the end... I like many for different reasons you see. 50s - funky swing stuff from the US to cheer us up during rationing - you can't listen to that stuff without smiling and dancing in your seat 60s - Beatles, what can I say? 70s - Lots of funky tunes, I didn't know them first time round but I love them now 80s - *my* era! I love that stuff, esp. Erasure, Pet Shop Boys, that kind of thing 90s - early indie of the 90s was also "my thing" at the time, you just can't beat the Madchester lot!! I'm not too into stuff of this decade really, probably cos I don't have a TV I don't know much of it anyway. But I guess I couldn't live without Radiohead. Stuff I listen to now is very varied, lots of the Divas (Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald etc.), 60s and 70s pop stuff, and lots of the current independent stuff and unsigned artists. mikey 10-11-2003, 15:58 70's for me - early 70's stuff like Bowie, Led Zep, Deep Purple. Mid 70's was getting a bit boring with all the disco stuff then the Punk era kicked in. The Jam The Clash Blondie Sex Pistols All the era's have there good bits even some of today's artists will go down in history. I mean David Sneddon has already retired ;) Coldplay David Gray Thrills all top artists that will be around a while:thumbsup: Lickszz 25-11-2004, 01:11 Decided to bump this up in order to establish a clearer indication from the results of the poll. Any more thoughts/votes? mojoworking 25-11-2004, 03:10 The poll doesn't really say anything about music. I'd say it's more accurate as a indication of the age demographic of those who voted. Nostalgia plays a big part in this kind of thing and plainly most of those who voted grew up in the 80s igm1 25-11-2004, 07:23 <--------------------------------------------- Definately the 70s for you know who :P ;) D2J 25-11-2004, 07:40 Originally posted by ianmitchell <--------------------------------------------- Definately the 70s for you know who :P ;) Abba  :suspect: Snook 25-11-2004, 08:55 As much as I like 70's and 80's music, I think I'll have to go with 90's, because I think there is such a great range of music in the early half of the decade that I will never get tired of listening too. nick2 25-11-2004, 11:21 I voted 80's for sheer entertainment value. igm1 25-11-2004, 14:36 Originally posted by Deejay Abba  :suspect: led zeppelin fool! :P hence my arrow pointing at my avatar and the name underneath the username :P igm1 25-11-2004, 14:37 Originally posted by nick2 I voted 80's for sheer entertainment value. The strange clothes and hairstyles? Nesh 25-11-2004, 14:48 The 80's is winning this poll?? I cant think of a worse time for music. I always tell my other half , who was a teen in the 80's, that he really dipped out. It has to be the 60's and early 70's. Life was so uncomplicated then..you could sing about how we all loved the enviroment and one another while destroying half a field of flowers to give to other people who were smoking the other half of the field. There really was a division between generations then! Peace, Love and and pass the gunja!!! igm1 25-11-2004, 14:51 Originally posted by Nesh It has to be the 60's and early 70's.
