When my son was born 2 and a half weeks ago, the first night on the ward he was gagging quite a bit as if he was going to be sick, but wasnt and it freaked me out, but the midwife said it was just mucus from delivery and nothing to worry about, since then he has been doing it every now and again, but last night he was doing it quite a bit, and it was like he was struggeling to breath altho he didnt stop breathing. Im just wondering if anyone else has any experience of this, as im not sure what to do, ive been discharged by my midwife, and the health visitor hasnt been in touch yet so dont really know who to contact, or if I need to anything?
Someone has suggested it may be reflux!

I would ask for your HV contact details from your drs surgery
It usually is just the mucus, my daughter did this alot it was so scary, the hv advised giving her a little cool boiled wate when it happenedr, if breast fed let them lap it off the spoon instead of a bottle. If your really worried and they aren't feeding then get it checked out asap. You can also ring jessops or call the mw you were with they will still see you even if you have been discharged.
Yep, our girls stopped breathing more than once and on one eventful night took turns over the space of 4-5 hours to stop breathing once for twingle 1 and twice for twingle 2. It scared the life out of us but some patting, somewhat inverted and hooking mucus out with little finger sorted it.
We bought movement sensitive monitors to keep us sane :)

The hv came out the afternoon, and seems to think its nothing to worry about, just him clearing mucus out, but fighting it and swolling it rather than bringing it up, she says as long as he isnt going blue etc he will be fine, she has suggested propping his head up slightly to sleep, so will see if that makes a difference.
Thanks for your responses.

The safest way to prop up his head is to pop something (a folded sheet or similar) under the mattress to elevate it. You probably know that , but I thought it was worth a mention.
I hope it clears up quickly, sounds scary. But at least the HV was reassuring.:)
