View Full Version : Anything Polish about Sheffield?
trentboy2 06-04-2005, 12:16 Me and my girlfriend are moving to Sheffield in a couple of weeks and were coming from Poland. Although I'm English she's Polish and I was wondering if anyone knew of any Polish bars, pubs or people she might be able to get in contact with for general Eastern European banter?
uncleheed 06-04-2005, 12:20 I'm not well up with the Polish scene, but I do know there is a Polish club on Ecclesall Road.
There are two Polish clubs on Ecclesall Road in Sheffield.
moongarden 06-04-2005, 12:22 Hi Trentboy,
There is a Polish club on ecclesall road and a trade embassy near the Hallamshire Hospital.
I'm not sure what else there is. My brother is also married to a Pole (from Elblag in the north) although they live in York.
I've been to Poland a few times to visit his inlaws and for the wedding and its a really interesting place to visit.
muddycoffee 06-04-2005, 12:33 There are quite a lot of Poles who settled in Sheffield, and lots of their offspring who were born and brought up here. Paul Heiny, the TV presenter had a polish dad and is from sheffield. There is a polish resteraunt opening soon near hunters bar. And the polish club is a vibrant place, they even have a polish travel agency for trips back to the old country. You can buy polish Vodka in Weatherspoons pubs, and Polish Sausages in Morrisons.
slimsid2000 06-04-2005, 13:44 I went to the polish club once - it was just a lot of people spraying Mr. Sheen and rubbing dusters on wooden surfaces. :hihi:
Polonium, the city's first Polish restaurant, should be opening about now on Abbeydale Road. Sheffield.
clogginchris 06-04-2005, 15:13 I work with someone who is Polish with a lot of connections to the Polish community in Sheffield - they are off work this week, but I'll get some suggestions from them when they return next week
My boyfriend's family are Polish. Does anyone actually know when the restaurant opens?
And my wife is Polish-Canadian! Seems there is quite a Polish community on here!
sparklesista 07-04-2005, 16:22 I'm not sure but there must be something Polish in Sheffield because there is a road near where I live called Donestk Way and I'm sure it's a Polish name and not Russian. :)

Donestk is the second largest city in the Ukraine to be precise.
onedizzybird 07-04-2005, 18:03 my grandparents are polish, i don't know anything about a community in sheffield. i used to play bingo with my grandparents once a month at the polish club in derby. the one in derby did seem to be more popular with the older poles though.
stevie1957 07-04-2005, 18:45 I know this is a bit off subject..sort off….
Does anyone remember the big Polish fella who used to walk up and down Eccessall Road around 1979/81? He was a bit of a character and for some reason used to talk in German.
markichamp 07-04-2005, 19:42 I'm a lil Polish boy!! Used to go to the Polish club saturday mornings to learn the language. Picked up many bad habits there e.g. Smoking ( I was only 10!!)
