View Full Version : My dog stinks!!
beansfeast 29-05-2008, 10:13 She really is quite smelly and has been for a while now, got her anal glands done yesterday but they weren't particularly bad anyway apparently. She doesn't get dirty on her walks and she's a pointer cross so tall, thin and short haired. She's had one bath in 5 weeks that kept her smelling better for a while but I wouldn't want to keep giving her baths regularly as I don't think it's that good for them!
So any dog owners got any hints/tips for keeping your dog less smelly?
:help:

No one of mine is "smelly" too :hihi: (Kira, shhh don't tell her I said so) but I'm afraid I don't know how to cure it, I think that some dogs are just a bit stronger smelling than others, and funnily enough I seem to find darker dogs more smelly than the paler ones.... but I'm sure that is probably not so :hihi:
Molly's pretty smelly at the moment so we're taking her for a swim later on. She doesn't get baths with soap because her coat is wonderfully non-stick with her natural oils- we just take her to a reservoir, big pond or river and chuck her favourite floating toy in for her to swim and fetch.
Because the rivers round here have lovely soft water, her coat comes out conditioned and soft when it all dries naturally afterwards.
I know that a lot of people think that it's important to make your dog smell nice, but as far as I'm concerned she will always smell of 'dog' and that's fine, because she's a dog.
dizzybird77 30-05-2008, 16:19 When my dog starts to smell I always check her ears (she's a bassett) cos sometimes they get dirt in there:)
Is it the anal glands? My mum's last dog really did smell when she got a bit older. She had to have the glands scrped at the vets!!

And if you read my 1st post on this thread you'll find her glands have already been done! ;)
She still stinks so we're giving her a bath once she's had a week to recover from being spayed, she may just be a dog that'll need a bath every month!
all dogs smell its when they are wet or been wet
Takara never used to smell but recently she stinks (a lovely mixture of swimming in a lake with dead fish and developping incontinence!).
Take a look at what she's fed on as that can affect their 'aroma' and also maybe see if her ears are clean - when Takara's ears get mucky, she really stinks and it's not just her ears that smell!
Yes my dogs stink too lol I just bath them every so often and that seems to help but in the weather we hve ben having i have noticed they are worse than ever lol
Grandad.Malky 16-07-2008, 09:07 All dogs smell or stink as you put it, its usually a smell you become accustomed to, when ours is stronger than that its usually due to a change in diet( Particularly veg ):hihi:, he as been out in the wet or an ear infection.
different dogs have different coats and different aromas
Beagles are wonderful little animals who absorb smells, so keep them in clean bedding and they smell of fabric softener :D
Staffies tend to have a very greasy coat which traps dust quickly, so a wipe down every other day with a damp sponge/cloth keeps them clean enough for your soft furnishings
Labradors tend to be greasy too - to waterproof them in the field, but if you're not working your's then you may want them to be a bit cleaner! Frequent damp cloth wipes being easiest
if your dogs feet smell it will help if you keep the fur between their paws trimmed really short. We use a nose hair trimmer to do Brude's so we don't risk nipping him with the scissors
