Cyclone 28-05-2008, 20:14 the edge run lessons, ideally you need a partner and just phone up and book. Peteh 28-05-2008, 22:42 the climbing works on little london road, supposedly europes largest indoor bouldering wall, really good atmosphere down there, very safe - matts everywhere... you can have an induction with a member of staff or just go with a friend thats been climbing before! I go normally three times a week or more and its great! peteh. DippyDore 29-05-2008, 01:48 i want to start climbing... any advice/help would be appreciated! How old are you? would be my first question. If you are still a toddler, with a very good set of keyboard skills and vocabulary admittedly, I'd say don't bother kid, not just yet anyhow. If you are a child I would say, go down the woods and try and climb a few trees. Put your playstation down, hard though that may seem, grab a few 6 inch nails and find a tree with loads of climbable branches, knock some nails in to give you a start, and go for it. If you are a teenager I would say, do what the devil you want, it's better than standing under the streetlight at night, drinking cider, and stabbing folks. If you are in your 20's I'd say, get yourself some gear and go out on Curbar Edge or Stanedge and climb till your heart's content. If you are in your 30's I'd say, be careful. If you are in your 40's I'd say, better not. If you are in your 50's I'd say, can the rope take the strain? If you are in your 60's I'd say, check your insurance. If you are in your 70's I'd say make this your last one. If you are in your 80's I'd say, burial or cremation? All the info you need is here. Urban_Pebbles 29-05-2008, 09:18 I took my sister to the climbing works for the first time on Sat. You need an experienced climber to go round with you the first few times and then you can go on your own, it cost her £9 which included shoe hire. If you want to do rope climbing/belaying, go to The Edge on John street and have proper lessons (about £15/lesson) you'll prob need about 3 and then you can go with a partner. Enumbers 05-06-2008, 22:28 I want to get into climbing too. I had a go in New Zealand - after wanting to try it for a while - it was great fun. I went to the edge climbing place - its in a rough area but the faciliity looked good. Prob best to learn from someone who knows what they are doing but I wondered if you wanted to partner up and learn together. The edge club has instructors but you have to do three lessons before you climb independantly. Let me know if you think it wanna give it a go. Emma JedW 06-06-2008, 10:14 could try finding a freelance isntructor, and going outside to climb, cant beat evening out in the peak :) maybe try www.tnt-adventures.co.uk roompig 09-06-2008, 21:44 Hey Alex and Enumbers, Few points i guess. My cousing and i are experienced indoor climbers have been going for about a year now. We have also been climbing outdoors now for around 3 months. Once you know the basics it just gets better. When i firts started to climb you have to join a club.... Ie the foundry or the edge this cost around 1 pound. lol. On your first time into the club you have to either A, take a lesson or B, go in with someone who is trained. When i first started to climb i had about 6 private tuition lessons to get me started. I would be more than happy for both of you to come along climbing with me and my cousing to an indoor climb if your interested. the more the merrier for me. You will need to hire a harness and shoes for your first lesson. around 15 quid should do it. I hope this helps. If either of you are interesed. Give me a shout and we can arrange something.! |
