Field Recording with Jez Riley French
Saturday 19 July, 11am - 10pm
Bloc Space, Sheffield City Centre

Join artist / intuitive composer Jez riley French for a day of sound spotting, workshops on how to make contact microphones and hydrophones (for recording under water), live performance and a chance to present your own work or join in the discussion about the creative possibilities of field recordings and our daily surroundings.

Jez is one of the UK’s most respected artists using extended field recording methods and his work has been performed, published and exhibited around the world in various contexts. He is currently engaged on the ‘in place’ project exploring the sonic architecture and audible silence of key structures and environments across Europe.

The day will include:
- An introduction to field recording, making a simple contact microphone for use with audio recorders, laptops, flash recorders, dictaphones etc.
- Chance to see sound art exhibition by Sarah Hughes and Patrick Farmer
- Making hydrophones
- Sound spotting around the Bloc location, discussion on the sonic architecture of our daily surroundings
- Sound walk around the streets of Sheffield
- Discussion around creative inspirations
- Presentation of your own recordings made on the day or existing work (if you have any), and a special live performance by Jez Riley

For this special event Jez intends the day to be an open, convivial and technophobe friendly day of discovery. Please bring along your own recording equipment / headphones if you have any or just a pair of open ears!
