View Full Version : Lights in the sky over Sheffield
Ok, so I was in bed last night, with the window open and I got rudely awaken in the early hours by a loud humming sound, I got up and looked out the window to see some sort of aircraft flying about over Sheffield ( I live at the top of Greystones and can see all over). It had two headlights on it and the noise didn't sound like an engine, more of a hum but loud enough to wake me up. I was very tired and had had a bottle of wine but the way this thing was flying and that it was there for so long leads me to believe :
a) its a UFO
or
b) its a government / army thing
Anyone know anything?
or am I just insane as my work colleague says ?
little malc 06-04-2005, 09:00 More likely to be the Police chopper, it has more lights than the parson preached about, and at a certain distance it sounds as tho' it's giving off a hum.
Could have been helicopter, but with the wind/rain going in the other direction might have muffled the engine noise a bit?
am very sure it wasn't a helicopter, that was my first thought, it seemed to big.
Airship? They are big, have lights and "hummy engines". Not too sure they fly at night/over Sheffield though.
x_LoUiSe_x 06-04-2005, 12:58 that damn helicopter is always above my house! n its soooooooooooooooooo noisey!
i live in shiregreen though so i aint suprised its here all the time and my house back onto the woods and our road seems to be a fave with joy riders and kids on dirt bikes
Broomster 06-04-2005, 13:43 Christ I think I saw it as well! I heard something at about 4.05am buzzing around outside my window (again Greystones but with a good view of the city) so had a quick look. It was difficult to see what it was, but I definitely couldn't see any choppers. Anyway it hovered around a few houses and shone a beam through a few windows, before moving off out of sight.
Anyone any idea?

Sounds defo like the Police chopper to me... they shine beams down looking for what they're out to capture etc... :)
Can be extremely loud if a window is open :?

I originally thought it was the police but decided that even they wouldn't shine a light into somebody's window. Unless they do now?
ISTR that the police helicopter has a 'stealth' mode where they can reduce the noise from the engines, for use at night.
Can't see why it would be anything other than the helicopter.

This police helicopter is a lot quieter than the previous one because it doesn't have a tail rotor. Don't think its a stealth mode though - I think that was Airwolf!

cgksheff 07-04-2005, 22:17 This prompted me to try and see if I could find out how a helicopter can work without a tail-rotor.
It is called a NOTAR system and involves a turbine forcing air out of the tail boom and tail fins in order to produce the necessary counter-rotational forces.
A simple guide to the system can be read here. (http://www.scienceweb.org/movies/speed.html)

Really good link - is it a way of moving politicians around the country at election time, seems to be powered by more hot air!
