View Full Version : Oh no, I have found my 1st problem with firefox...
BobDaBuilder 06-04-2005, 08:16 Does anyone know how to make firefox open a link in a new window (Except for right clicking and choosing it) cos i'm getting sick too death of people posting links that I follow that get quite interesting and then I end up having to navigate all the way back....
Also while on the subject of firefox...does anyone know how to select a different user profile if I haven't ticked the radio box in the past that asks you every time...???
Cheers in advance...
ncrossland 06-04-2005, 08:18 If you have a mouse with a clickable scroll wheel, click a link with that, and it will open in a new tab.
Or -
CTRL+click will open in a new tab
SHIFT+click will open in a new window
I wasn't away of the click-wheel thing - that sounds good as I currently do the right-click, new tab thing.

On my laptop, which doesn't have scroll wheel / middle button, if you click both right and left simultaneously, it has the same effect. It doesn't seem to work on my desktop machine though.

You're quite a breath of fresh air aint ya...Thanks again
I want two profiles cos me and my missus both use the same machine (Until Friday) and we have different bookmarks and having them both on the same profile takes up 1/2 the browser window...lol
One thing that annoyed me when trying Firefox was that links on websites designed to open in a new window (i.e. with target="_blank" in the html) opened literally in a new window when using left click, and not in a new tab. For me, this kind of defeats the object of tabbed browsing. In Avant Browser, these type of links are simply opened in a new tab. Why would Firefox need new windows/instances anyway when it has tabbed browsing?

It's a side effect of Firefox being standards compliant! The W3C HTML specs say that target="_blank" has a special meaning:
The user agent should load the designated document in a new, unnamed window
(my emphasis)
It would be a bit hypocritical to advertise as being standard compliant, and then selectively ignore parts of the standards you didn't like!
There is an extension that will change this functionality in Firefox though.

Opera is only free if you put up with a large and annoying banner ad at the top right of the browser window.
I have posted a few tips to optimise Firefox in the tips&tricks section Here (http://xthost.info/vidster9/HTML/index.html)
They worked a treat for me, let me know if they work for you
There's also this (http://www.totalidea.com/freestuff4.htm) which is ann add on to optimise Firefox. Seems to work on the couple of machines I've tested it on.
