View Full Version : Ideas needed for a child's day out? MissStar 05-04-2005, 18:43 I need help on some places that I could take my sister for a day out. She is 7 years old and I want to take her somewhere for the day. As anyone got ideas? Kthebean 05-04-2005, 18:58 Take her to magna science adventure, it is so much fun she may not even realise it is educational :) Kthebean 05-04-2005, 19:04 Or, if this is too pricey (I just thought of that) why not take her on the bus to the peaks and let her tire herself out running round on the rocks (kids love that kind of thing). Aww I wish I had a little sister to take on days out! redrobbo 05-04-2005, 19:06 You'll need personal transport for these......but try Sundown Pets Corner/Adventure Playground, near Rampton, Notts. Ideal for a 7yr. old. Take the Worksop-Lincoln road, and just before Dunham toll bridge, follow signs-posts off to your right - only a couple of miles away. Huge playground. Safe activities. Mini houses. Pets galore. Also, White Post Childen's Farm, Farnsfield, Notts. (halfway between Mansfield-Newark). Wider variety of farm animals. Children's play activities. PS Outdoor centres - so choose a nice sunny day! PPS Have a nice day out!  Bourne 05-04-2005, 19:11 If you have wheels then Chatsworth. Adventure playground, petting zoo, big garden, ice cream, brilliant! Magna was quite poor when we went, lots of it didn't work and the staff weren't interested. Their playground is good, though. B cgksheff 05-04-2005, 19:25 The Otters, Owls, Deer and other stuff at The Chestnut Centre (http://www.ottersandowls.co.uk/chestnutcentre.htm) in Chapel-en-le-Frith (a bit of a drive) never fail to fascinate every time we take youngsters. alchresearch 05-04-2005, 19:37 Originally posted by redrobbo Sundown Pets Corner/Adventure Playground, near Rampton, Notts. I thought it was left, not right - up near Rampton. UnkleBob 05-04-2005, 20:55 Hi, i don't know where you are but if you can get there and it's a nice day, how about the rare breeds centre at the top end of Graves Park? Most young 'uns like animals... redrobbo 05-04-2005, 21:02 Originally posted by alchresearch I thought it was left, not right - up near Rampton. Turn right for Rampton off the Worksop-Lincoln road, just before Dunham toll bridge. Left takes you to Church Laneham, where the water skiiers can be seen in action on the river Trent. I was there last Saturday, travelling up from Newark, via the historic church at Littleborough, Sundown Pets Corner and then Laneham. Know east Notts very well. BobDaBuilder 05-04-2005, 21:15 Castleton is a nice place and all the hills will knacker her out as well, just a matter of relying on the weather.... Also a bit on the expensive side depending on what you wanna do, stay away from the devils arse (Cave) as it's a complete rip off... But anyway, you can get a bus direct from the interchange, takes about 45mins to get there. psyn 05-04-2005, 21:24 Last time I went to Sundown (fairly recently), there were no animals there. I went out with my sister today - she is 8 years old - we went swimming, then for a walk down the canal to feed the ducks and to Victoria Quays to look at the boats. We then went for lunch on Ecclesall Road and had a walk round the Botanical Gardens. Made the walks a bit more interesting by giving her a notepad and pen and setting challenges such as find 5 things beginning with the letter t etc. We finished the day by going on the playground at Heeley Millennium Park and then going home and baking cookies. A good day was had by all! Chop 05-04-2005, 21:33 How about a trip on the tram, couple of hours swimming in ponds forge, quick trip to Mc'ds and then tram / bus home. I'm hoping it'll work for my six year old nephew who I've got for the day tomorrow aswell !! GimmeSomePK 06-04-2005, 04:48 Originally posted by Chop , quick trip to Mc'ds How about half an hour together in the kitchen before you set out making a packed lunch? -PK- mshappy 06-04-2005, 06:23 If you have transport. Wakefield mining museum. Junction 38 M1 and follow the signs !! Its fantastic and is completely free to get in. The underground tour takes abour 1hour but we got there mid morning and had to wait a couple of hours for our tour but there is a lot to see including a few pit ponies!! My 7 yr old has been doing about mining at school last term and was well up for another visit. dollypeg 06-04-2005, 06:34 Gullivers Kingdom at Matlock is very good. Costs about £7 but the then everything in side is free. My grandkids love it. uncleheed 06-04-2005, 08:32 Originally posted by mshappy If you have transport. Wakefield mining museum. The guides are great. They are all ex miners and full of little funny stories. The only tip I would give,is wear some sturdy shoes. The terrain can get a little rough! spiffymonkey 06-04-2005, 08:49 Originally posted by kathythebean Aww I wish I had a little sister to take on days out! My little sister won't let me. She is 19 though... Doesn't matter, I have a 5 year old and a 2 year old that love going out :) They have little tiny hiking boots and I take them scrambling over rocks out near Ringinglow and up on Wadsley Common. Doesn't half tire 'em out! Sundown Pets Corner is now just Sundown Adventure Land since the pets went away. It's still a great day out, though. I used to go there when I was a wee little chab and it was great. PerlOfWisdom 06-04-2005, 11:01 Train to Cleethorpes - kids love seaside and train journeys. Manchester Science museum - free to get in and much bigger than Magna. fridgeman 06-04-2005, 11:58 [QUOTE]Originally posted by BobDaBuilder [ Also a bit on the expensive side depending on what you wanna do, stay away from the devils arse (Cave) as it's a complete rip off... why is this place a rip off??? alchresearch 06-04-2005, 12:01 Originally posted by redrobbo Turn right for Rampton off the Worksop-Lincoln road, just before Dunham toll bridge. Surely anyone travelling from Sheffield would turn left off the A57 just before you get to Dunham Bridge. That's where the brown road sign is. Turning right would take you to Ragnall. Flossy 06-04-2005, 16:15 How about the Deep in Hull, you can go by train direct from Sheffield or by car it’s approximately a 1hr drive, I’m of there tomorrow with my 15 year old son. nick2 06-04-2005, 16:27 Take them to Chatsworth gardens, throw them in the maze, they will be gone all day, possibly longer. beansforyou 07-04-2005, 15:21 This threads made me chuckle... now please...:- 1. Decide wether its left or right off the a57 before the bridge. 2. Explain why devils arse is so expensive. 3. I can't beelive the animals have gone from Sundown! I loved it there as a kid :( Sheffield I think has lots to do for young kids, alot of it free, it's just having the idea thats hard! I went for a walk today around the local reservoir, it butts up to the peak district, and it's glorious at this time of year, take a picnic and your set for the day, I just find it sad that I know for definte most of my neighbours don't know it even exists, they're too busy arguing with each other and putting their windows thru :loopy: If your based more towards town/ ecclesall area, have a walk through the parks, starting at endcliffe at working your way up (to the cosy cafe right at the top) Get the train out to Grindleford, have the best breakfast ever created for a couple of bob, then walk down into Hathersage, look round the graveyard (Little John is buried there) and the nice shops, you can always get the bus back from hathersage, or go a bit further to castleton etc If you don't have your own transport, I believe the bus services start a bus to Holmefirth around this time of year (last of the summer wine country) it really is worth a visit. I don't know where the Tourist INformation is anymore in Sheffield centre, but you can buy very cheap booklets full of interesting walks all over sheffield, I think the star might sell them, as well as little paper shops etc Ooh, I nearly forgot one of my favourites, again if you don't have transport, get up early, go tot he train station, and head out for Blackpool for the day  sand, smells and more cheap tack than you can throw a stick at...Heaven :D it's about £25 return on the train, and they run till quite late, so you can get a good full day in :D mrsb73 07-04-2005, 15:33 Theres a place called The Tropical Butterfly House at North Anston, go to www.butterflyhouse.co.uk for a look. Theres a small farm area where I believe you can arrange to feed the animals, tractor rides, a cafe, a play area and of course the butterfly house itself. Not too expensive either I don't think. It wasnt a patch on other aquariums that i have been to. Magna always looks good although i have never been. I always wanted to go there when i was about 8. Ponds forge or the lesiure centre in hillsbrough have good fun pools. have a nice day out Shiesh 02-05-2005, 00:36 This place is a must for a kids day out with differance and is about 1hr 20 minutes drive away!! www.yorkshirenet.co.uk/theforbiddencorner/ |
