hi everyone, i have just moved into a maisonette with my 2 cats after being in a house and i could not cope with the garden and i would llke some advice over the cats.

they have been used to going out with us being in a house but now i am in a upper masionette i dont know if i should keep them in all the time i dont mind but i feel that they are missing going out as one of the cats keeps going to the door and mewing to go out, i know i am going to keep them in for a couple of weeks but wonder if then i should see if they want to go out, but wonder if the thought of going down the stairs and back up again pass people might frighten them a bit or would they get used to the idea

anyone with any thoughts on this for me and especially from people that have got cats in flats or maisonettes what they do about their cats

I know people who have cats in high rise flats which travel in the lift to get up and down to use the garden with very few problems. The neighbours call the lift and press the buttons for them, in case you're wondering.

Cats are really adaptable creatures. If the outside space is safe for them I don't believe that there's any real reason why they shouldn't go out and enjoy it every now and then.

If you're in a council flat you can be evicted for allowing your pet into the public access areas.

Oh yes- that does have to be taken into account when you make considerations. My post also assumes that you have whatever permissions you need to actually have animals inside your flat in the first place.

thanks medusa for your reply, i will be keeping them in for a while but if they seem to want to go out i will try them and see what happens, i am just worried that they may be a little frightened of using the stairs if they see someone on them but they may get used to the idea as you have said cats are fairly adaptable to their surroundings will have to see what happens, one cats seems fine staying in but the other one keeps mewing to go out

hi, i now you are not allowed pets in upper maisonetts as one of my neighbours have had a kitten and the council found out and told them to get rid of it or they will be evicted, the council takes this very seriously. also for other occupants of the lower maisonetts have to put up with the smell of cat urine and fecies on there front door step, because cats cannot get back to there owners. im sorry to tell you this but it isnt fair on your cats and your neighbours to let the cats out. please dont take it as having a go.

no i dont think your having a go just stating something that you know as happened.the biggest majority of cats do not do their business in public they like to go where they cant be seen and usually in hedges. i think someone took a dislike or was a funny so and so to report the cat as the council would have been informed by that person

the law for dogs and cats in massionettes and flats, well it was 4 years ago not sure if its changed, are that they are not allowed but sometimes if you already have one they can go with you but if it causes a nuicence then you have to get rid and you are not allowed to have another one after the animal dies as my mum moved into a flat and she was told that it was ok to take her dog but if it caused a nuicence it would have to go.

i know in these massionettes there are dogs and i know just on from me on the upper floor there is a dog and if they got funny with me to get rid of my cats then i would tell them that if theirs go so will mine

if someone came to me and told me my cats were doing their business on their path then i would keep them in, i know there are cats around here as i have seen a couple and i dont mind keeping my cats in.

thanks for that i will probably try them in a couple of weeks and see how it goes.did you have any probs in the beggining with them having to go up the stairs and did you get the cats after you moved or did you have them before moving in the maisonette as if you got them after you moved in the maisonette they probably did not find it strange having to go up and down the stairs

I had one before i moved in and got one after i wouldn't swear to it but i think the rules regarding pets in maisonettes are that you are not supposed to have them if you have a shared entrance but as long as its only the stairs you share you shouldn't have a problem thats what i was told when i moved into my place anyway. :)

well i should not have a problem as i know now that there is 2 dogs one on my side of the block and one on the other side and there is a dog in the next block all upper maisonettes, so it looks like there is quite a few around here with pets i have seen about 3 different cats roaming about the maisonettes on the grass below.

if i get any complaints i will just tell them to get rid of other animals on the block and i will get rid of mine, so i will put up a fight.
