View Full Version : Tideswell Walk Sunday 1st June
This sounds an interesting walk, once again obtained from Peter and Pat Tidsdalls' book "Walks in the Peak National Park".
Basically the walk in the book takes you through Millers Dale, Tideswell Dale, Tideswell, Peter Dale, Wormhill, the Wye Valley and Monsal Trail in that order; but I'm going to start and end it at Tideswell, for the benefit of anyone who needs public transport to get there, as there is no other place on the walk that can be reached by bus.
So with this in mind, the walk will start at the church in the centre of Tideswell at 10.30. The 65 bus leaves from Sheffield at 9.30, and arrives at Tideswell just in time for the walk. The return bus is at 3.30. As usual though, if anyone has spare places in their car, please say so. I'll start the ball rolling by offering 1 place to anybody from the Hillsborough area.
The walk in total is 8.5 miles and there are some hills, but I don't think that it will be too strenuous. (Famous last words!).
neoteric 26-05-2008, 09:10 We've had some excellent walks from this book it's a little gem. I'm coming on this one and can offer lifts to 3 people from City/Norfolk Park area.
Think I might need plenty of practise on those hills as I've just booked a holiday to do all fifteen of the 3,000 foot mountains in Wales over a long weekend, I'm also still planning an attempt on the Yorkshire 3 peaks inside 12 hours.
Count me in for this one please. A lift would be appreciated but that can be sorted nearer the time once prospective runners and riders are known, otherwise I don't mind getting the bus.
Edited to say: Having looked at the bus timetables I'd be concerned about the return journey. If for some reason the 3.30 bus was missed then there looks like a 3 hour wait for the next one
canada_girl 27-05-2008, 08:49 Sorry I can't make this one - Work is sending me to Barceolona (I know. . life is rough). But don't feel too bad - I will be spending most of the time in conferences!
We'll be along on this one!

Good point Taxman regarding the return buses, and thanks for bringing it up.
To be honest I don't know if anyone is thinking of making the journey by bus anyway, and whether it'll make any difference what time the buses are. I always try and cater for people who rely on public transport, but more often than not, everybody seems to arrive by car these days.
But just in case there is anybody arriving by bus, I'll make sure that we' get back from the walk in time for the 3.30 return bus to Sheffield, which shouldn't be all that difficult, 8 miles in 4 1/2 hours including stops is easily achievable I think.
vincentvega 28-05-2008, 06:38 Hi, we'll be there for this one.
Just been checking the walk route, and for anybody who's wondering about toilet stops etc, I think there are public toilets at the end of Millers Dale which is about 2/3 of the way round.
I would like to go so could I have a lift please? :-)
There'll be lifts for everybody, we'll probably sort it out at tomorrows walk
I'm up for it - first walk for ages! - and glad to give lifts if people need them..
I live south/west part of town, PM or post on the thread if you live over that way, or want a lift back to Sheffield.. :)

Haha! I'm glad you thought I was being friendly - I feared I'd scared off the new member by suggesting that he ate animals... :) Thanks, scoobz!

Hehe, touché.
I'm off to bed. Look forward to meeting you tomorrow, mack. And welcome to the Forum!
:)
What a great walk despite setting off in the rain. We never let a bit of damp weather put us off though and we soon warmed up.
Plenty of different types of countryside, wildlife and plants seen today as well as the usual great company.
Photos will be along after I've soaked in the bath and had something to eat :)
Soaked and satisfied, here are the photos from today

Very challenging walk today, 9.4 miles in total, and I'm totally knackered. Don't think going to bed at almost 1.0 a.m last night with a bellyful of ale inside me helped as I tired towards the end of the walk, but like Taxman, after a long soak (and a 20 minute kip in the bath!) and some nice grub, I'm now feeling like a new man :suspect:
A mixed walk today, with something of everything along the way. Some interesting new dales today called Peter Dale and Monks Dale, as well as the old favourites Tideswell Dale and Millers Dale, all with an abundance of fabulous floribunda for our wildlife 'expert' Taxman to identify to us. I am always thrilled to walk alongside the River Wye too, because you are always guaranteed to see Dippers on the river, and today was no exception.
1 newbie to say welcome to today, Mack633, and also an 'oldie' making a return after about 18 months absence, Shsheff. I hope both of you enjoyed today and that we'll see you again soon.
Attendees today were :- Mack633, ShSheff, Taxman, Neoteric, Hemlock, Mr Hemlock, Billysmum, Nooka, Fuzzle, Sherwood1, Scoobz, Vincentvega, Lady Vega.
I havent posted on this site before and not been on the walks either but I just wanted to say that it was nice to see your photos ,my OH works at Tideswell(wont mention the name but he is a coach driver),this area is my favourite place in Derbyshire,my great dream would be to live there but not happening so tend to spend time here whenever possible.Well done to all you walkers and hope you are not too worn out.

Nice of you to follow our walk today, and I'm glad that you enjoyed "seeing it" from your armchair. This is the 2nd time we've done a Tideswell walk this year, both of them different, and no doubt we'll probably go to that area again at some point in the future too.
What was nice about todays walk was that we hardly saw a soul all day. I don't know why there weren't many people in the area, compared with say Edale or Castleton, because it's every bit as interesting, in its own way, but it certainly meant that we more or less had the place to ourselves for once!
vincentvega 01-06-2008, 19:11 Hi, what a pleasant walk we had today, myself & Lady vega ( chamone ) really enjoyed it. Nice to see new faces & it was a good turn out despite the weather. Meal & pint (shandy) in the Red Lion ended the day nicely.
Hope you enjoyed the pic's, unfortunately i didn't capture the lad falling:hihi::hihi::hihi:

neoteric 02-06-2008, 06:13 That was a fantastic walk, and how green everything looked and what a great way to recover after the previous evenings barbecue fun.
I was going to post these pictures (http://picasaweb.google.com/neotericwalks/TideswellWalkSunday1stJune) last night but was distracted by the pina colada and aztec beer that I found whilst unpacking - hey hum now busily looking for cheap caribbean flights to soak up some that Latin American spirit for real......:)
