Tragically we've had a few cats squished in the local traffic over the years. So many in fact that I forbade the missus from getting another. Naturally she has ignored me and got another one. she justifies this on the grounds that; the others have all been males. This is a female therefore less like to wander onto the street. - Sounds like tosh to me. Does anyone know if she's right? (she usually is.)

In the 14 years I've lived here, I've only lost 1 on the road and it was a male. I don't know if yours were castrated, but that's supposed to stop them wandering. However, although my 2 (castrated young brothers) boys don't wander far, they are forever bombing across the road to dive up the tree or chase each other. Fortunately it's not too busy a road. I'm afraid the only way you'll guarantee your cat not getting killed on the road, is by keeping her as a house cat.

My female cat, does not wander at all usually just sits in our garden, one of my male cats wanderers just round the neighbours garden, The other one dont know where he goes, but always comes back safe thank goodness, All have be neutered/spade. So l would agree with your wife, it's the males that look for females, much like human life lol

My Queen used to roam for miles murdering everything in her path, where as my big fat tom wouldn't go out of sight, he loves his mummy. They're both indoor babies now so it's a bit of a non issue for me.

I've got both male and female cats and they are both just as bad as each other for running across the road or rolling in the dust in the middle of the road. We've only ever had one hit by a car but he's alive and well with a metal pin in his leg bless him. Although he does tend to take his time when crossing the road . Could you not keep it as an indoor kitty if you are that worried?
