purplepippa 06-10-2003, 12:11 AM Sheffield Mental Health Email Group
This is an email group / message board / discussion list for people in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, and surrounding areas to discuss mental health issues and services.
It is for people who use mental health services, or those who refuse mental health services, or those who have been through services and survived in Sheffield.
You may want to praise or recommend services, or criticise them and find out how to make complaints, you may want to discuss mental health issues in general or look for support. You may also want to meet others in this area who are going through similar things to you. This group is here for all of these things, and more.
Through this group we can also discuss and run campaigns on relevant issues, share information on mental health issues and services, and share our own individual and valuable information and knowledge.
Please feel free to join and have a look round, and see if you feel this is a good place for you.

Yeah, and try to get help from social services, WTF?! It would be easier to get blood out of a stone IMO.
espadrille 06-07-2008, 10:20 AM So this was a problem in 2003 and nothing has changed in 5 years??

I can agree with that statement 100 times over.
wolfstalin 06-07-2008, 01:32 PM So this was a problem in 2003 and nothing has changed in 5 years??
Nothing has change ever since they introduced 'care in the community' otherwise known as chuck um on the streets and let the public deal with um.
pikey 06-07-2008, 04:22 PM Knowing someone who work's for sheffield Community Health i think a reply is due here to the put down'ers .
The teams that work for the mental health service in sheffield put many long hours per day into their job ( as I am aware there is always teams of careworkers on duty 24/7) . These teams of highly trained staff work long hours a day 7 days a week , the only restictions the face is that of gov legislation & rights of the individual client concerned. perhaps those that say 'chuck em on the streets & leave them to the public' would like to se the Victorian establishments such as the old Middlewood Hospital reopen ie put them where they are forgotten & away from the public.
Like all aspects of the health service the mental health service across the uk is short of funding & understaffed, so Please before you go beratting the health service any more ask yourself this one question? could you do ,would you be prepared to do a job that requires you to go a persons address 7 days a week to someone thats just had a severe life changing situation & gets paid less than an office worker?
Care in the Community is just one of many depts across the heath service that is underfunded year after year whith over worked & underpaid staff , PLEASE give these teams that work in this enviroment their due & dont knock them for the care that they give .
navyblue 06-07-2008, 04:29 PM If you don't like the Mental health services in Sheffield complain, write to the chief executive tell your GP, MP, EMP, and any one else who will listen. The fact is they will not listen to the staff. The NHS is yours so fight for it.
espadrille 06-07-2008, 08:51 PM I wrote to my MP,Richard Caborn and I am still waiting for the outcome,10 days later
Spinoza3807 06-07-2008, 10:42 PM There is no such thing as an instant cure.
The key is co-operation, communication and hard work.
Life was never meant to be easy. Patience and hard work are needed.
If you don't work with it, you may be better off with a placebo, sleep, eat, exercise (mind and body.) Sunshine, breath, relax.
This purely my personal opinion, thru experience.
Patience.
md1sxc 07-07-2008, 01:52 AM Care throughout the country is poor. Our NHS does it's best (to which, in m opinion, we should be grateful for),as the care in other County's (from my experience with my Dad) is no better or worse from South Yorkshire. A very complex issue, no black nor white.
Bonny 07-07-2008, 02:25 AM Having experience of the service provided in Chesterfield, Sheffield and Rotherham I can say the following:
Chesterfield - excellent provision, wide range of facilities and options for those with mental health issues, friendly and approachable staff. Community provision - the best i've seen.
Sheffield - the few staff (except one) I came into contact with were a) downright rude and offensive (complaint was made) and b) unapproachable and generally unhelpful. Community provision - non-existant. One person based at Northern General was excellent and stood out from the rest.
Rotherham - mixed. Some excellent and helpful people. One person with a bit of a chip on their shoulder. Community provision is acceptable.

I'm pretty surprised to hear there is such a noticeable difference between areas - makes me think I should be moving to Chesterfield!
Bonny 08-07-2008, 04:45 AM I was amazed at the difference!
The mental health unit at the Royal at Calow (Hartington Wing) had (hopefully still has) some excellent facilities which include: art therapy; drama therapy; gardening; a gym; cookery; sports etc.
They also had a lot of community groups in the Chesterfield/NE Derbyshire areas.
In Sheffield the message was very blunt and clear "we don't do any of that sort of thing"
I guess the difference is how the hospitals/trusts aportion their money? Sheffield has lots of excellent NHS facilities/treatments which may mean money is directed to those areas leaving the mental health sector more underfunded than other areas.
